CBS News Detroit to debut 2 local weeknight newscasts, with plans ... (Detroit Free Press)

Starting Monday, CBS News Detroit — as the WWJ-TV (Channel 62) team is branded — will be airing half-hour newscasts at 6 and 11 p.m. on weeknights and ...

Makupson is confident that people will like the station’s news team once they get to know its members. With embedding, “it’s not a different reporter showing up only when something bad happens, the carousel of different people that they’ll send in to report on negative news. The station set out to hire what it calls multiskilled journalists, a requirement that has become increasingly common across the news media landscape. In December 2021, CBS Detroit News outlined an ambitious plan to stream local news 24 hours, seven days a week and also to air live TV newscasts in morning, midday, evening and late-night time slots. In coming weeks, the weeknight newscasts are expected to expand to weekends and be joined by daytime newscasts. Also different at CBS News Detroit is the decision to have a streaming-first mentality. Regular Channel 62 viewers may be most familiar with Carol Cain, the host of Sunday morning’s “Michigan Matters” public affairs program (she’s also a Free Press columnist) and Karen Carter, who has been doing the station’s Next Weather updates. In the mid-1990s, however, WJBK became Detroit’s Fox affiliate and CBS wound up buying Detroit's WGPR-TV (Channel 62), the first Black-owned television station in the nation. Says Watson: “It’s a working newsroom, meaning everybody, except for the control room, is in this one room. One more way to stand out from the crowd? create the loyalty that Detroit viewers have.” What’s going to stand out about us is that community aspect and the people who are there in that area, working for (the communities) every day,” says Amyre Makupson, executive producer of community impact for CBS News Detroit.

CBS News Detroit Aims to Reinvent Local News (TV Technology)

TV Tech takes a behind-the-scenes look at a notable case study in using technology to reinvent local news coverage.

“Seeing us start things from scratch and knowing that we had a timeline for being up and running, really motivated them to push forward on their products,” Watson said. “We can use it to go to any terrain in any weather,” with a full complement of weather sensors and gear, says Pytlowany. The vendors, he noted, played a key role by being willing to embrace new ideas and develop technologies that would advance their vision using newer cloud-based and IP technologies. It also is a case study in using technology to build a “streaming-first” hyper local news operation that CBS hopes will fundamentally alter how local news is approached, produced and distributed to viewers on a variety of platforms. We want to convey the news for exactly what it is, not a polished script that's worked up in the newsroom and then carried down the hall and reported on by anchors in the studio.” CBS Detroit has combined the multi-platform skills of its staff with a technological infrastructure that allows them to be embedded in local communities. We plan to turn the camera on the assignment desk and have an assignment editor report in real time as you know information is coming in. “Each of the SUVs is outfitted with LiveU LU600s for cellular-based transmissions, which allows them to go live under any circumstances throughout their DMA.” Based on input from their multimedia journalists, CBS Detroit removed the front passenger seat and created a mobile editing station. Everyone has the ability to jump across different platforms, to jump between writing and editing.” Detroit, however, marks a new step forward in that effort, with operations, staff and technology specifically designed from the ground-up as a streaming news, hyperlocal operation. Eventually, there will be a 24/7 live streaming CBS News Detroit channel that is live most of the day, much like their 13 other local news streaming channels.

CBS News Detroit launches local newscasts with streaming-first ... (NewscastStudio)

First on NewscastStudio: After decades without a traditional news department, CBS News Detroit is set to launch local newscasts at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan.

“It’s the most exciting time in a lot of people’s careers here. And then it is the marketing and the branding and the constant reinforcement of who we are in the mission.” The station aims to hit 40 hours of news output across dayparts along with its around-the-cloud streaming platform. “Our focus out of the gate is, hello, we’re here. “First we launch, first we show up,” said Roark. In the field, journalists will use LiveU bonded cellular technology for transmission with integration into the LiveU Matrix to share feeds with other owned stations. The amount of commitment and backing that we have from CBS from all levels… We have the opportunity to build this on the ground versus trying to retrofit something.” We’re going to turn that camera to the assignment desk. We’re going to turn it to a producer. “We were given a blank canvas,” said Brian Watson, president and general manager, CBS News Detroit. “This is a market where viewers want local news, they consume it, they look to it for help and solutions,” said Adrienne Roark, president, CBS Television Stations.

Billed as a 'streaming-first' platform, the station will air newscasts on Channel 62 at 6 and 11 p.m. weeknights. It launches Monday evening.

We really wanted to pull from some of the industrial and innovative architecture design of Detroit and we incorporated that into our newsroom design as well." We want to convey a sense of authenticity to news and how it is communicated, but then we're also proud of the set itself," he said. We feel like if they cover the one area, they will have a better finger on the pulse of what's important to those communities, they will become the trusted and familiar face of our news operation, and they will get the jump on stories." "Some of the key differences are commitment to community journalism," he said. Duncan has led WNEM’s coverage of the Flint water crisis and other breaking news coverage and was also a sports anchor and reporter for the Fox affiliate in Philadelphia. Their reporters are positioned to have their pulse on what is happening because they're embedded full-time in the communities they cover.
