Canucks fire Bruce Boudreau, hire Rick Tocchet as replacement (ESPN)

Bruce Boudreau has been fired as coach of the Canucks, who are again on track to miss the playoffs with another underachieving season.

He won the Stanley Cup as a player with the [Pittsburgh Penguins](/nhl/team/_/name/pit/pittsburgh-penguins) and then twice as an assistant for them. He won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year in 2007-08 when he was elevated from the minors to coach the Capitals on Thanksgiving and got them to the playoffs. But a Canucks team in disarray did not give him much of a chance to keep that success going. Teams coached by Boudreau for a full season have made the playoffs nine out of 10 times. "You never know if it's the end," Boudreau told reporters after the game, tears welling in his eyes. Rick Tocchet was hired as Boudreau's replacement for a Vancouver team that has lost 28 of 46 games this season.

I just had 15 [players] come up to me, we're all crying together, which is silly for us men to do sometimes, but I think they would have went through a wall for me and, as a coach, that's all you can ask for, quite frankly." The Canucks (18-25-3) have lost 10 of their past 12 games and are sixth in the Pacific Division, 14 points behind the Colorado Avalanche for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.
