MILWAUKEE -- Sal Bando, the former third baseman and captain of a trio of World Series-winning A's teams in the 1970s who was the first free agent pickup in ...
Bando remained with the Brewers as a special assistant in 1982, and was so respected by Selig that he was offered the manager’s job when Rodgers was dismissed that June. In retirement, Bando had various business ventures in the Milwaukee and Phoenix metro areas and was a longtime supporter of the Milwaukee-based charity Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer. Later he transitioned into a role as special assistant to Dalton and then succeeded Dalton as GM after the 1991 season, holding the job until August 1999. Bando had slipped into a reserve role under manager Buck Rodgers, but he got opportunities to start the American League Division Series against the Yankees and notched three hits in Game 2. "Our hearts are broken by the passing of our Captain and our friend," the Priebs said in a statement. Bando was in the Majors the following year, beginning an A’s tenure in which he made four All-Star teams and three times finished in the top five in American League MVP balloting while developing a reputation as the leader of a team that won three straight World Series from 1972-74. Bando remained a force in ‘78, when the Brewers, fortified by their additions, took a leap from 67-95 one year to 93-69 the next, and finished 6 1/2 games behind the 100-win Yankees in the American League East. Sal Bando, who won three World Series titles and was a four-time All-Star with the A's before joining the Brewers, where he later became GM, has died at 78.
"Sal impacted the organization proudly for many years as both a player and as an executive," Brewers vice president of business operations Rick Schlesinger said in a statement. Over a 16-season playing career that began with the Kansas City Athletics in 1966, he had a .254 lifetime batting average with 242 home runs and 1,031 RBIs. "It is with a heavy heart the Bando family is sad to announce the passing of their husband and father, Sal," the A's said in a statement.
Arizona State baseball legend Sal Bando, a College World Series and three-time World Series champion, has died at the age of 78.
The two-time All-WAC player was also named to the College World Series Legends Team in 2010. He served as the team’s sixth general manager from October 1991 to August 1999. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Sal’s loved ones.” According to a statement from his family, Bando died Friday night in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Sal Bando, a standout third baseman and core member of the Oakland A's teams that won three straight World Series in the 1970s, has died at the age of 78.
After his playing days, Bando served as a special assistant for the Brewers, and in late 1991 he ascended to the role of general manager for Milwaukee. After 11 seasons with the A's, Bando signed a free-agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he remained for the final five seasons of his playing career. Bando and the A's won the World Series in 1972, 1973, and 1974, and while in Oakland Bando made four All-Star teams and finished runner-up in the American League MVP balloting in 1971.
Sal Bando, who spent more than two decades in some capacity with the Milwaukee Brewers as a player and executive, died at age 78 on Friday.
Bando was inducted into the Brewers Wall of Honor as a charter member in 2014. “He took over in Milwaukee when free agency was starting to take off and we were limited in the resources that we could use, and as a small-market team it was difficult," Garner said. Greg was hitting fourth and was in a particularly tough slump and so Sal after one of these games comes down to my office and I’m sitting behind the desk. I thought they tried to make me out as the bad guy at the time, and they were trying to protect their image and do some damage control, too." That may have played a role when Bando stood at the forefront of one of the most dubious decisions in franchise history, not bringing franchise legend Paul Molitor back for the 1993 season. Somebody next to me said, ‘Uh oh, there’s getting ready to be a lot of damage.’ We didn’t hear anything for a minute and Sal came out and was laughing and he said he’d closed the door and swung the bat and couldn’t even hit the sink. Bando's first major bit of business was firing incumbent manager Tom Trebelhorn, and he led the search that ultimately landed Phil Garner as manager for the 1992 season. With his playing career complete, Bando immediately became a special assistant to general manager Harry Dalton, the architect of Milwaukee's run of success from the late-1970s and through the 1980s. Bando played in Milwaukee from 1977-81, posting his best year in the uniform with that 1978 team when he batted .285 with 17 homers. "More than a great player, he was a tremendous person, a really great man. He helped us turn the corner and was everything we hoped for, and played an important role in helping develop our younger players such as [Robin Yount](https://www.mlb.com/player/robin-yount-124721) and [Paul Molitor](https://www.mlb.com/player/paul-molitor-119236), into stars. When he joined us as a player, that was a big day in our history.
By 1968, Bando had become the starting third baseman for the A's in their inaugural season in Oakland, and he quickly became a key member of a budding dynasty.
Bando was only a part-time player in 1981, and decided to retire after 16 MLB seasons in order to transition into a new role in the Brewers’ front office. Bando was a sixth-round pick for the then-Kansas City Athletics in the 1965 draft, and he broke into the majors the next season. As per Bando’s family, “It is with a heavy heart, the Bando family is sad to announce the passing of its beloved husband and father, Sal, who last night lost his battle with cancer that began over five years ago.

This upcoming season, new addition Jace Peterson is currently listed as number six on the A's roster, and he is likely to get a good amount of playing time at Bando's old spot, third base, in the same ballpark Bando created so many memories for A's fans. Only two players that were selected before him accumulated more bWAR in their careers than Bando's 61.5, and those players were Johnny Bench (75.1 WAR), a second round selection by the Reds that would go on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989, and Graig Nettles (68.0), a fourth round selection by the Twins that went on to become known for his time with the Yankees. That's why he was deemed the Captain of the A's during those runs. Bando credited Yankee legend, Joe DiMaggio, then working with the A's, on his breakout in 1969. Bando would debut with the A's in 1966, getting into eleven games, and then another 47 games in 1967.
