Jamahal Hill became the new king of the light heavyweight division after blasting Glover Teixeira for five rounds Saturday night at UFC 283.

Teixeira (33-9) dropped the light heavyweight title to Prochazka at UFC 275 last June in the best fight of 2022. Teixeira, 43, became the oldest first-time champion in UFC history when he beat Blachowicz to win the belt at UFC 267 in October 2021. The Chicago native, who trains out of Michigan, had finished four out of his five UFC wins coming in via KO/TKO. "I'm going to walk back with him," Teixeira said. Hill landed a UFC light heavyweight record 232 significant strikes, the fifth-most ever landed in a UFC fight. Hill hurt Teixeira badly in the second and third rounds with head kicks and hard punching combinations. Jiri Prochazka relinquished the belt in November, prior to what would have been a December fight with Teixeira due to a bad shoulder injury. "The dude is tough as bricks, man," Hill said. Afterward, Teixeira, who has been one of the best 205-pound fighters in the world for well over a decade, announced his retirement after 21 years as a pro fighter. He blasted Teixeira for five rounds with wicked punching combinations and head kicks, bloodying the former titleholder. Coming in, ESPN had Teixeira at No. I needed to do it in one round.

Jamahal ended the round with a big knee to the head and a follow up right hand at the buzzer. Bruce Buffer read the scorecards and all three had a clean sweep for Hill, with a 10-8 round thrown in for good measure. Hill broke the record for most significant strikes by a fighter in a light heavyweight fight which went the distance, previously held by Marvin Vettori. Halfway through the round Glover was able to finally get Hill to the ground. Glover opened round three with a single leg takedown and then switched to a double leg against the fence. Glover tried to goad him into attacking by calling him on but Hill was not to be baited into needless risk. Teixeira pressured forward for the rest of his round and the fighters each landed good shots in the last ten seconds of a round that Hill clearly won. Hill swarmed with strikes that hurt Teixeira but Glover fought back when urged to from Mark Goddard. Hill managed to use the fence to get back to his feet with one minute left in the round. Jamahal switched from trying to land bombs to pumping his jab out and touching the face of Glover, from both stances. Glover won the belt in 2021 but lost it in 2022’s ‘Fight of the Year’ against Jiri Prochazka. Hill broke free and landed a monster knee on the break.
