Daniel Jones' rapid rise changes things for the Giants (New York Post)

Daniel Jones had just made history in his playoff debut, and Giants teammate Darius Slayton, was explaining why it came as no surprise.

The Mets closer wasn’t chasing his nine-figure contract as much as he was chasing redemption and a shot at a championship, and the same goes for Jones. Jones became the first player to deliver at least 300 yards through the air, two passing touchdowns and at least 70 yards rushing in a playoff game while leading the Giants to their first postseason victory since they beat the Patriots 11 years ago in Super Bowl XLVI. And that was part of the reason Slayton was so distraught over his late third-down drop that put the pending victory at Minnesota in peril. Though Giants co-owner John Mara famously said the franchise had “done everything possible to screw this kid up since he’s been here,” Jones sure deserved his fair share of the blame. Bank Stadium after Jones had beaten the Vikings last week by doing things with his arm and legs that no postseason quarterback had ever done, and Slayton reduced the man and the performance to the most elementary terms. The receiver was at his locker at U.S.

Jones is still young (he'll be 26 in May), so there's time to figure him out. 0 Rec TD TD Here's a look at Jones' stats by season. But if a team swoops in with, say, a four-year offer of $100 million, the Giants could find themselves outbid. Daniel Jones 40 time: How fast is the Giants QB based on NFL ... (Sporting News)

Revisiting Jones' 40-yard time, a reminder that draft combine results don't always translate to NFL success...or failure.

Employing a series of designed run plays that accentuate both Jones' and Saquon Barkley's skillset, Daboll have turned New York — once so reliant on the pass — into a run-first team. Perhaps a few scrambles here and there to keep the defense off balance. However, it doesn't hold a candle to the blazing times put up by Michael Vick (4.33s), Lamar Jackson (4.34s), Robert Griffin III (4.41s) or Justin Fields (4.46s). But when he was clocked for his 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, the reading wasn't particularly pretty. Jones is one of the league's most dangerous dual-threat QBs. He showcased some decent wheels in addition to a precise arm, racking up 17 rushing touchdowns in three seasons at Duke. Daniel Jones Jones made big strides as a thrower this year, bumping his competition percentage to 67.2% while dropping his interception rate to a league-low 1.1%. Daniel Jones rushing stats He takes pride in his ability to tuck it and run, using his 6-foot-5 frame to evade pressure. But just how fast is the 25-year-old? And how does he compare to some of the league's other track stars who happen to throw the ball for a living?

He took plenty of hits and had to display some of his trademark toughness along the way. He'll make the short trip from New York down to Philadelphia this Saturday, where he'll play in the biggest game of his life to date against the No. In his first career playoff game last week against the Vikings, Jones was nothing short of outstanding. In his first three NFL seasons, the Giants went 4-12, 6-10 and 4-13 with him at the helm. Fans were quick to bestow upon him the nickname "Danny Dimes," although some now prefer "Vanilla Vick" in a nod to his improving rushing ability. But by the end of his senior season, scouts from around NFL had taken a keen interest in Jones. Jones went on to have a successful three-year career in Durham, leading the program to back-to-back bowl wins for the first time ever. While his peers were touring the country showcasing their arm talent to college coaches and scouts, Jones had his in a cast. "I sent him the link and he just about fell off his chair when he looked at the highlights." Starter Thomas Sirk went down with a ruptured Achilles, opening the door for Jones to take over the starting job. “I watched maybe a quarter and a half, and I picked up the phone and said, ‘You’re right,’” Cutcliffe told the Chronicle. But the kid was tough, and he could play.

2023 NFL Free Agency: Have Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley played ... (SB Nation)

The Giants shocked a lot of people by going 9-7-1 and then beating the Vikings in the playoffs. A long-term contract will make Jones less expensive in 2023 and give New York a better chance to keep other free agents (like Barkley) as well as going out to find better receivers and offensive linemen on the market. Only nine quarterbacks in the NFL are set to make more than that next season and though Jones led the NFL with the lowest rate of interceptions (1.1%), he was only 28th in his rate of touchdowns (3.2%). Can the Giants justify paying Jones the potential $30 to $35 million salary for a quarterback who has thrown 36 combined touchdowns over the last three seasons; five fewer than what NFL leader Patrick Mahomes had in 2022 alone, only one more than Joe Burrow and former Daboll mentee Allen’s season totals. At the end of the regular season, a new contract for Daniel Jones seemed inevitable. Had the Giants season ended there, perhaps the franchise would stay the course with quarterback Daniel Jones, because by most accounts the team was finally trending in the right direction after almost a decade of ineptitude.

Daniel Jones' lackluster outing doesn't change what he's earned ... (New York Post)

Daniel Jones just made himself a ton of money. How many times did you hear that over the past few weeks?

The Minnesota defense was dreadful enough to guarantee the firing of its coordinator, and to virtually guarantee that the 6-foot-5 Jones would look like a combination of Cam Newton and John Elway. Diaz wasn’t chasing his nine-figure contract as much as he was chasing redemption and a shot at a ring, and the same goes for Jones. And then reality hit the Giants hard from the blind side at the Linc on Saturday night, and they watched their dream season burst like that water pipe in their Philly hotel. If the Giants are forced to overpay Jones, they should accept that result with a smile. It wouldn’t have mattered if Eli Manning were out there behind center, instead of sitting in a suite and getting booed by his favorite crowd when he was shown on the video board. As it played out, after Jones delivered an historic performance against the Vikings in his playoff debut, there was too much about his big, fat payday to come.

Jones and Barkley are the two most important free agents the Giants have this off-season.

Thus it would behoove the Giants to get Jones done first and then work on Barkley's deal so that they are not choking their salary cap once free agency begins in mid-March. The Giants can apply the franchise tag to one of the two if negotiations stall. Regarding Jones, the Giants could also opt for the transition tag, which would cost them $30.402 million. Whether that means he'll stay with the team to continue his upward trend is another story. But the team's surprising play, which carried them to the divisional round of the playoffs, changed that. I grew and improved throughout the year, and I will continue to try and do that.” The Giants reportedly had preliminary discussions with Barkley's representatives during the bye week in what was believed to be a feeling-out process. "That's outside of my control wanted to show the Giants that the guy they drafted is still here. I think there are some things I’ll go back and look to clean up, improve, and grow as a player. In 2022, Jones and Saquon Barkley remained off of the IR long enough to showcase what they could accomplish together, but only the latter should be considered part of their long-term blueprint. Giants: 3 most likely contract solutions for Daniel Jones (FanSided)

Daniel Jones is set to become a free agent in the offseason. Here are three ways the New York Giants can approach his next contract.

If a desperate team did offer Jones a deal under this tag, the Giants would have the right to either match the deal or let him go in exchange for two first-round picks. Time will tell what will happen, but the one thing we can say for sure is that Jones will be paid handsomely this offseason. The non-exclusive tag isn’t used very often since it does permit players on the tag to negotiate with other teams, allowing Jones to potentially test the waters and see if another team is willing to blow the Giants out of the water. This contract makes sense since it offers Jones a higher salary but provides the team an out if he doesn’t continue to develop like he did in 2022. Letting Jones get to free agency is a tremendous risk since a ton of teams will be in the market for a new quarterback. A good comparison could be Kirk Cousins, who is a quarterback in the same class as Jones and will earn $36 million in 2023.
