Three Takeaways From Suns Victory Over Nets (Sports Illustrated)

Phoenix snapped a three-game losing streak and will have an off day before hosting the Pacers/Grizzlies in a back-to-back this weekend.

"Defends and stays in front of the ball. On a night where stars such as Devin Booker and Chris Paul were still out due to injury, fans have been calling on the likes of Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges to deliver. Hopeful to keep him around; he brings something that we need," Suns coach Monty Williams said prior to the game. In what might be his final performance with the Suns, he also dished out six assists. 4, leading by as much as 24 before Brooklyn stormed back and made it a three-point game in the final seconds. Johnson quickly made good on that energy by scoring a quick ten points and finishing with 19.

Not to mention, Utah’s bread and butter comes in the from of their high-octane attack on offense that has been supplemented by tremendous passing from everyone on the floor. In addition, the Nets need to take things into their own hands when it comes to their elite three-point shooting. Even though the absence of Kevin Durant hurts this team drastically in more ways than one, the Nets need to rebound quickly if they are to end their losing ways in a swift manner. After almost miraculously overcoming a 24-point deficit in the loss versus the Suns in the third quarter and only losing by five, Brooklyn has fallen to 0-4 without Durant due to their uninspired offensive outings. As for the Utah Jazz, they are fresh off of back-to-back triumphant victories against the Timberwolves and Clippers as they attempt to work themselves back north in the Western Conference Standings after starting off the regular season so hot. Hit with a devastating injury to Kevin Durant that will see him miss the next few weeks with an MCL sprain to his right knee, Brooklyn has decided to play it safe and hold their superstar small forward out until after the All-Star Break.

Kyrie Irving kept up the red-hot form he found Thursday against the Suns — and he showed the Nets actually can win a game without Kevin Durant.

But the Nets responded with a 17-5 run to swing the momentum again. That gave the Nets a 36-24 cushion with 10:07 left in the half. The Nets missed six straight shots and committed a couple of turnovers. The Nets got mauled on the offensive glass and faced a huge disparity at the free throw line, not taking a single foul shot until there were nearly four minutes left in the first half. But they found a way to win, with Claxton and a couple of timely stops proving to be enough. He scored the most points by a Net this season, hit a season-high eight 3-pointers, tied his season high with 11 rebounds and added six assists.
