"Just a first-class guy, tremendous human being. "This is a business. "It's a mentality that really motivates me too. "I was surprised, but this is baseball," Arraez said. Arraez, 25, is a career .314 hitter with unparalleled bat-to-ball skills in the modern game. "We've talked about it quite often, wanting to add offense this offseason," Marlins general manager Kim Ng said.

Arraez is coming off a season in which he won the AL batting title with a .316 average to go along with a .795 OPS, 49 RBI, 31 doubles, eight home runs and 88 runs scored over 144 games. He finished with a 3.75 ERA over 180 innings with 174 strikeouts against 53 walks, a .234 batting average against and a 1.17 walks and hits per inning pitched mark — the latter two marks both below his career averages (.242 average, 1.19 WHIP). As the roster stands, Joey Wendle and Segura will get the bulk of the run on the left side of the infield, with Jon Berti and likely one of Jordan Groshans, Xavier Edwards or Amaya serving as backups. The Marlins acquiring Arraez is the highlight of a flurry of moves Miami has made over the past two-and-a-half weeks. “This offseason definitely felt a little bit like ‘The Little Engine That Could,’” Ng said. Arraez, who turns 26 in April and is under team control for three more seasons, said he plans to arrive in Miami early next week ahead of spring training, which begins in mid-February. Ng said Arraez will primarily play second base but will also provide needed depth at first base. “I want to see that new uniform.” I called him back and he said ‘We traded you.’ I said, ‘Oh, really?’”

Luis Arraez Trade Is Smart for the Twins, Puzzling for the Marlins (Sports Illustrated)

Minnesota added another solid starting pitcher, but Miami curiously grabbed another hitter who won't help its deficiencies in hitting for power.

(Not least because these four players are better described as “four second basemen” than as “three-fourths of an infield and a center fielder.”) But there might not be a better way to arrange this particular set. He started a plurality of his games at first base in 2022, after starting the most at second in ’21 and the most at third in ’20, and did not exactly cover himself in glory at any one of those positions. But his lack of power is so striking that it stands out even among this small group of contact hitters: His .410 slugging percentage is not just the lowest of the seven but the only one to come in under .455. The Marlins should have theoretically been in the driver’s seat: All the solid rotation additions are off the market now, which means there’s a lot to be said for a trade chip such as López, particularly one with two seasons of team control. In short, López is just the kind of rotation addition that was needed in Minnesota, putting a quality, dependable arm in the middle of this group. The Marlins are sending pitcher Pablo López (plus a pair of prospects) to the Twins in exchange for reigning batting champ Luis Arraez. No, López isn’t an ace, but he’s a solid option for the middle of the rotation and a critical piece of depth. The Twins will miss Arraez, but they needed to bolster their pitching far, far more than they needed his bat. [Roster Resource](https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/twins), he’ll slot in as the No. (Chris Paddack should be able to rejoin the rotation in late summer after recovering from Tommy John surgery.) That’s still not a particularly awe-inspiring group. On the other… That’s not to say the Twins wouldn’t still benefit from even more—is any team ever fully set on pitching depth?—but that’s something they can keep pursuing at the deadline if their season goes according to plan.

Twins, Marlins Nearing Trade Involving Arraez, Lopez (MLB Trade Rumors)

ESPN’s Jeff Passan [reported](https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1616523095656857600) the deal was done. Arraez will deepen and strengthen what’s been a lackluster Miami lineup, and the organization’s rotation depth is strong enough to withstand the loss of Lopez. On the other side of the swap, the Marlins will get a left-handed bat to help balance out a heavily right-handed lineup. A torn ACL during his prospect days torched his 2017 season, and he’s been on the injured list three times since Opening Day 2020 due to knee troubles as well. Arraez is lacking in power, evidenced by a career .096 ISO (slugging minus batting average), and his average sprint speed is below average, per Statcast. The 26-year-old Lopez has come into his own as a quality big league starter over the past three seasons, pitching to a 3.52 ERA with a 25% strikeout rate, a 7% walk rate and a 47.4% ground-ball rate in 340 innings.

Twins sent batting champ Luis Arraez to Marlins for Pablo López (NBC Sports Chicago)

The Twins traded reigning AL batting champion Luis Arraez to the Miami Marlins Friday for a three-player package featuring starting pitcher Pablo Lopez.

The deal makes sense for Miami, which has a strong pitching rotation highlighted by NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara, and newly acquired right-hander Johnny Cueto. Lopez will give the Twins yet more depth to an already deep rotation albeit one that's absent a true ace. The 25-year-old Arraez had a breakout season for Minnesota last year, making his first All-Star team while batting a league-best .316 and denying Aaron Judge a Triple Crown.

Assessing the Luis Arraez for Pablo López Trade (Twins Daily)

The Minnesota Twins traded All-Star Luis Arraez to the Miami Marlins in exchange for pitcher Pablo Lopez.

Secondly, the Twins traded from a position of strength (infield bat) and acquired a position of need (starting pitcher). While I write about baseball in an era of advanced metrics and numbers, it’s impossible for me to not get caught up in the emotion of baseball and no player on the Twins encompassed the emotion of baseball and love of the game quite like Luis Arraez. With this deal, the Twins have added a B and C-level prospect to replenish the farm and give them more trade ammo for down the road. Be sure to keep coming back to Twins Daily for lots more trade reactions and content over the coming days. [signed ](https://twinsdaily.com/news-rumors/minnesota-twins/stunner-carlos-correa-agrees-to-terms-with-minnesota-twins-r13504/) [Carlos Correa](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/correca01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=twinsdaily.com&utm_campaign=2023-01-20_br) last week, it quickly became apparent that there was a logjam in the infield and that a move would have to be made. Logically the name that made the most sense for a trade was [Luis Arraez](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/arraelu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=twinsdaily.com&utm_campaign=2023-01-20_br). [Byron Chourio](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=chouri000byr&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=twinsdaily.com&utm_campaign=2023-01-20_br). Over the countless weeks of trade speculation between the Twins and Marlins, there was talk about López for Arraez being an even swap trade, or even that the Minnesota Twins might need to toss in prospects to make the deal work. A young (26 years old), affordable (set to earn $5.5M in 2023) and controllable (under team control through next season) starting pitcher is the exact kind of pitcher that Derek Falvey likes to go after (think Tyler Mahle). There’s a good chance that Arraez’s value will never be higher than it is right now and cashing in on that value is really smart. Luis Arraez is no-doubt an elite contact hitter, one of the best to ever put on a Twins uniform. Arraez’s elite contact skills helped to prop up a slumping offense all summer for the Twins in 2022.

Why the Twins traded Luis Arraez to the Marlins for Pablo López, 2 ... (The Athletic)

It wasn't easy trading Luis Arraez, but the Twins felt that the time was right to bolster their pitching.

Beyond physical preparation, the Twins thought Arraez appeared in more games in 2022 because he played most of his games at first base (65), requiring less strain on his legs. A source said the team has no plans to move Maeda, who is coming off Tommy John surgery in September 2021, into the bullpen. Obviously, the highlight and the gem of it all was Pablo. … This guy is a leader, this guy is a worker, this guy is a winning player all the way through.” The leading candidate there would be Gray, who went 8-5 with a 3.08 ERA but was limited to 119 2/3 innings by IL stints. Difficult as it is, the Twins were willing to trade Arraez for multiple reasons. Arraez missed 28 of 60 games in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 campaign with knee tendinitis. The right-hander described himself as always striving for improvement and tireless in his preparation. And he did it all with a strut, famously shaking his head “No no no” every time he took a close pitch for a ball. The Twins see Chourio, who received a $200,000 signing bonus, as a plus runner, hitter and defender. He’s averaged 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings for his career and gives the Twins another strong starter to add to an already full rotation. Chourio batted .344 in his first season in the Dominican Summer League.

Pitching might be expensive, but dealing the popular AL batting champion won't help the team field a more effective lineup.

Luis was said to have turned down a contract offer from the Twins before last season. No matter the comments or social media we read, trading Arraez won't cost the Twins in ticket sales. Carlos Correa, when hitting second, is going to miss those six or seven pitches that Arraez allowed him to see from a pitcher. Who would have guessed the No. There weren't many of those." "I gave an 8 to Joe Mauer as a high schooler," said Mike Radcliff, a Twins vice president for player personnel.
