Warriors vs. Celtics injuries: Jaylen Brown questionable (Golden State of Mind)

Jaylen Brown is questionable for the NBA Finals rematch between the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors, while Andre Iguodala, James Wiseman, ...

Just as with Kuminga, this injury has kept Wiseman out for longer than we expected. Shortly after signing the deal, he tore his ACL, which would have kept any team from signing him if he were still a free agent. Similarly, Green still has a chance at returning against the Cavs, and we should certainly see him back next week at the latest. And while the starting lineup will be back to normal with Klay Thompson re-entering the lineup following a rest day on Monday, the Dubs will [still be without a handful of players](https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2023/1/18/23561733/jonathan-kuminga-jamychal-green-scrimmaged-wiseman-did-not-as-all-three-remain-out-vs-celtics). This will be his eighth straight game missed, though Steve Kerr said on Wednesday that there’s a chance Kuminga plays on Friday against the But being held out of the front end, with soreness, suggests that Iguodala is dealing with an actual ailment, and probably won’t play Friday, either.

Celtics star Jayson Tatum is the 10th player in NBA history to reach 9000 points before turning 25.

[Al Horford](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/al-horford-1bdxkLwov50QIyiQ/) and [Robert Williams](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/robert-williams-LEhMNrHYNoFDLqTs/) both had big games for the Celtics. Though he committed seven turnovers and had some puzzling decisions, he continued to make an impact, especially on the glass. He finished the game with a season-high 48 minutes played, four more than he had played in any other game this season. They shot just 14 for 25 on shots at the rim (56 percent) and 31.7 percent on 3-point attempts. The Warriors won the first of the 2022 Finals rematches on Dec. - The meeting was the teams’ second of the season.

Horford had 10 points, five rebounds and a chase-down block in the first quarter. (The Celtics managed to get a timeout with 0.5 seconds left, but couldn’t get off a shot.) Curry took it away from him and lined up a 3-pointer from the far side of the halfcourt circle. The Celtics led by as many as 10 in the first half but trailed for the entire second half before Brown made a 3-pointer to tie it at 106. Jaylen Brown added 16 points and nine rebounds, making a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Warriors trade rumors: James Wiseman, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses ... (CBSSports.com)

Golden State, with a huge tax bill looming, would only be renting anyone it traded for.

It would really have to be worth it to move him, and a deal like that likely isn't out there. That isn't to say they couldn't be moved in the right deal, but a rival team hoping to obtain them would be searching to get Moody or Wiseman on a bargain, and the Warriors aren't in sell-low mode. But again, it would only be a rental, and Kuminga has already proven himself to be a guy the Warriors see as a core part of their future. Gay would be a nice pickup if it were to happen. The Warriors need to recoup some value for taking him No. ... [Jonathan] Kuminga, [James] Wiseman and [Moses] Moody remain likely to be with the Warriors beyond the deadline.

Because should Golden State do what they always do and figure things out in the post-season, we could potentially see a repeat of last year’s summer classic, and for Boston, the last thing you want is to go into that series having not won a game against them since Game 3. Hopefully, they continue to play their brand of basketball and prove that they’re the better, deeper team and that they’re ready for whatever gets thrown at them come playoff time. Up to that point, the Celtics had only lost five games, and only once had they lost on back-to-back occasions. Of course, Tatum’s performance will likely have a significant impact on the outcome of the game; if anyone needs to see the ball drop early and often, it’s him. to dispel the demons of last summer. Memories of Golden States celebrations should still be fresh in all our minds, especially that of the players who spent the summer mourning an opportunity they feel passed them by. Robert Williams looks to be returning to his impressive best, which, when compared to his limited ability during the postseason, is a significant factor, and of course, Malcolm Brogdon has settled into the rotation that little bit more. Worryingly, things look strikingly similar heading into Thursday's game, where the Celtics will be hoping to even up the season series 1-1. What followed was the worst run of games in Boston’s season thus far. [Golden State Warriors](https://www.goldenstateofmind.com), a team that knows what it takes to hoist a Larry O’Brien trophy and who excel in rattling their opponents by getting inside their heads throughout the course of a series. After years of near misses, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown finally led their team to an Eastern Conference championship and earned the right to compete for this biggest prize in basketball. Yet, against the Warriors, the weight of that fateful Finals still weighed heavily, and throughout the 48-minute contest, Boston began to crumble as Golden State slowly amped up the pressure.

Warriors trade scenarios: What I'm hearing about Jonathan Kuminga ... (The Athletic)

The most prudent financial way to do that is at the deadline, as the Warriors did with Wanamaker and Chriss a couple years ago, clearing the tax hit. [Rudy Gay](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/rudy-gay-0k7JzHSPuPxkd8sU/) in Utah fit that description? [Jakob Poeltl](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jakob-poeltl-wzkpB8YKmxhyMN2h/) or [Kelly Olynyk](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/kelly-olynyk-Qlzp0cFJAKpYydgC/) would profile as a useful rotation upgrade. If that’s Lamb and if there’s another player to be added either via trade, free-agent signing or in the buyout market, then another roster spot would need to be cleared. He’s on a two-way contract and has already used up 36 of his 50 eligible games, slotting in as frontcourt depth for a team that has needed it. The Warriors already have a set starting lineup, an effective high-usage sixth man ( [Jordan Poole](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jordan-poole-OKSId48WraP8pRNl/)) and two other bench players ( [Donte DiVincenzo](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/donte-divincenzo-5yeG2wUB9RTaEEGd/) and Jonathan Kuminga) who have solidified themselves. He is currently a regular part of the Warriors’ rotation, averaging 25.9 minutes per game this month and making 42 percent of his 3s on the season. That isn’t to say they couldn’t be moved in the right deal, but a rival team hoping to obtain them would be searching to get Moody or Wiseman on a bargain, and the Warriors aren’t in sell-low mode. He’s shown more and could net more, but he’s also worth more to the Warriors. They are facing a well-documented tax crunch and are uninterested in adding committed salary beyond this season, which eliminates many of the league’s other trade options. They appeared in need of a jolt to realistically threaten for a title. [Golden State Warriors](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/warriors/) have made during Bob Myers’ tenure came three seasons ago.

The Celtics had 22 second-chance points to the Warriors' 14, as well as 52 points in the paint to Golden State's 30. They'll also hope this is the last time they'll see Golden State in 2023, as even with the impressive win it's clear the Warriors know how to keep Boston's stars from taking over. They squeaked out the OT victory despite shooting 39.8% as a team, their lowest field goal percentage since their Dec. The Warriors had seven offensive boards as a group. To put that into perspective, the 36-year-old entered Thursday's action averaging 9.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Boston's size advantage was the main reason it was able to keep it close vs. The Celtics' big men had a field day against the Warriors' smaller lineup. He also played a season-high 48 minutes in the gritty performance. [Jaylen Brown](https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/celtics/jaylen-brown?b) was rusty in his return from injury but he came through with big buckets late and finished with 16 points. As for Brown, he couldn't buy a bucket during regulation in his return from a right adductor injury. Here are our takeaways from the C's thrilling victory, which brings them to 34-12 on the season. As for the Warriors, their road woes continue as they're now 5-18 away from Chase Center this season.

The fully healthy Celtics started with a double-big lineup, sending Derrick White to the bench. To start the game I was a little trying to feel it out. White shot 0-for-6 from the floor in just 17 minutes, which is worth keeping an eye on as the Celtics try to find minutes for all of their best players. The replay didn’t appear to show anything conclusive, but officials reversed the call in favor of the Warriors. Al Horford was particularly impressive in the first quarter with 10 points and five rebounds as the Celtics uncharacteristically went to the post to exploit what the Warriors gave them. “It really wasn’t part of the game plan,” Horford said. It wasn’t really part of the plan.” We get to find out things we need to work on and things we like and continue to do it.” “I wanted to come out here and I wanted to win. Like, the fact of the matter is we lost. “Every game is important for him, the way he’s approached his craft, his season,” Mazzulla said. Joe Mazzulla even seemed a little indignant on Jayson Tatum’s behalf when a reporter had the temerity to suggest that beating Andrew Wiggins might mean something to Tatum, given how well Wiggins defended the Celtics’ star in the Finals.

There is still time for the Warriors to find themselves. "There has to be a sense of urgency but I don't think we're playing that way... Thursday's game in Boston saw one of their better third quarters in a while, but they weren't able to slam the door shut. It's got to be a constant build ... 28, the Celtics went on a nine-game winning streak. But a lot of it is self-inflicted or not being able to prove we have the identity that we need." Just a year ago, the Celtics found themselves with a 25-25 record through 50 games. "We're capable, but it's a matter of execution and being able to sustain it," Curry said. He continued: "I think the point [where we'll turn a corner] will come, but you've got to build toward it. Warriors' small-ball lineup shows strengths, weaknesses in loss to ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Steve Kerr made a surprising change to his starting lineup in Boston, and it sounds like he's sticking with it.

When Looney and Green both start, the Warriors often are behind the curve in spacing and the amount of scorers on the floor. "It's a credit to Loon being a constant professional and understanding he's so important to what we do," Curry said in the locker room. Friday marks the second night of a back-to-back for the Warriors, and they're going against a Cleveland Cavaliers team that features two very good big men in Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. The Warriors won all three games, Looney averaged 7.8 rebounds off the bench and also averaged a plus-11. And it was the first time in a while we've had all those guys healthy, too. Looney didn't start any of the Warriors' final three games against the Celtics last season in the Finals. Wiggins was held to five points in the first half but caught a spark of fire in the third quarter, scoring 10 of his 20 points. "Just wanted to open up the floor, give us a little different look," Kerr said of his decision to make a change. The Warriors' do-it-all point-center was on assist shy of a triple-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. If he's going to be placed in the starting lineup instead of being a scoring spark off the bench, Poole has to hold his own defensively. Klay Thompson got it going early, scoring 20 of his 24 points in the first quarter. "Yeah, I think I'll keep doing it," Kerr said after the loss to reporters in Boston.

'Felt like a playoff game' - Celtics outduel Warriors in overtime (ESPN)

The Celtics charged back late to outduel the Warriors in overtime on Thursday, a victory that showed Boston is "taking steps in the right direction."

While the victory did little to make up for their defeat last June, it did give them revenge for a blowout loss at the hands of the Warriors earlier in the season. "Just continuing to play through and it showed tonight, because we had some huge mistakes down the stretch, end of regulation and overtime, and to be able to overcome that and stay the course, not get down on ourselves and thinking about just the next play, that's what we did. That's all that matters at the end of the night. And it takes a mindset to be a really, really good team in the NBA. Ultimately, though, Boston found a way to come out on top. Both coaches loaded up their top players with heavy minutes; Tatum played 48 minutes and didn't come out after the first quarter, while Brown crested 40 minutes in his first game back. But a spirited push back into the proceedings in the fourth quarter saw Boston cut the lead to 3 and then tie it when Brown hit a wing 3-pointer following a Golden State miscommunication. The crowd was electrified from the opening tip and hung on every moment throughout the action. I think even though you play really, really well and we win, we're still going to have some of those moments. After a nip-and-tuck first half ended with the Warriors taking a one-point halftime lead thanks to To be able to have poise to battle back, that shows a lot of growth. And, thanks to a

If it weren't for a clutch 3-pointer from Brown, Boston doesn't even make it to overtime. A challenge from the Celtics was unsuccessful and Wiggins went 2 for 3 at the line. Warriors' Steve Kerr makes seismic starting lineup change in OT ... (The Athletic)

By choosing Jordan Poole over Kevon Looney, the Warriors are trading defensive security for offensive potential.

It is a cumulative plus-121 in 306 minutes this season, only recently eclipsed by the [Denver](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/nuggets/) starting lineup. Green said postgame he wasn’t going to leave [Al Horford](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/al-horford-1bdxkLwov50QIyiQ/) alone in the corner after Horford had just hit a corner 3. Poole gave Wiggins an unsure look and then decided to over-help on [Marcus Smart](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/marcus-smart-dGLlEXUh7pIPWXUa/), curling off a screen to his right. The pros and cons of that lineup switch were on display in those final 30 seconds of regulation. [Steph Curry](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/stephen-curry-toS7DgUD3IIt7uds/) with 30 seconds left in regulation. Besides the critical mistake in the final minute of regulation, Poole actually had an encouraging defensive night, holding up well enough against the expected isolation attacks to keep that unit survivable defensively. He typically brings better energy and physicality from the jump. “Just wanted to open up the floor,” Kerr said. Against Boston, in particular, you have to open up the floor. That Brown 3 sent the game to overtime, where the Warriors lost 121-118. That meant Poole remained on the court and Looney remained glued to the bench for the most consequential defensive possession of the night. Without a break, the Warriors were unable to make an offense-for-defense substitution.

Warriors lose a 121-118 thriller to Celtics due to shoddy defense (Golden State of Mind)

With 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter of the Golden State Warriors' NBA Finals rematch against the Boston Celtics, Steph Curry got an easy layup off of ...

All it does is help the Celtics pull away even further, courtesy of a Horford corner three. The Celtics run Elbow action off of HORNS (ball handler up top, two players at the elbows, and two players on both corners). Human nature is a hump that can be extremely difficult to get over. But what made Brown inexplicably open on the wing — and off of a made bucket? That left Smart — shooting 32.9% on threes prior to the game but was 3-of-6 at that point — momentarily open. Curry and Thompson botched a switch on the guard-guard screen between Smart and Brogdon. Admittedly, it’s tough to keep instinct in check. Those are two very good players, but one would think that a theoretical Tatum-Brown action would command that sort of coverage — which clearly wasn’t the case. If Wiggins commits to a full contest, the next man making the rotation should then be Poole, whether it be toward Tatum or Brown. It happened against the Celtics in overtime: Green’s instinct as a help defender is to help on the cut, but Thompson is already there to step in front of Brown — which renders Green’s full commitment to help unnecessary. Smaller players can get cross-matched onto bigger frontcourt players, while lumbering bigs can find themselves defending out on the perimeter against quick and shifty guards.

What the Celtics Have Learned From the Warriors (Sports Illustrated)

Left for dead after a lackluster season in Philadelphia, Horford repaired his game (and his body) in Oklahoma City before returning to Boston last season, where he has been a model of consistency. Game Preview: Warriors at Cavaliers - 1/20/23 (Warriors.com)

The Warriors close out a five-game road trip against a Cavaliers squad that owns the best home record in the Eastern Conference.

The Warriors faced a tough test on Thursday, and it won’t get much easier on Friday as they take on a Cavs team that has the East’s best home record. This will be the Dubs’ second and final regular season matchup with the Cavs, and the Dubs won the first one, [106-101](https://www.nba.com/warriors/news/gameday-recap-20221111), back at home in November behind a clutch fourth quarter performance from Stephen Curry. On Thursday, the Warriors shortened their rotation to eight players and used a starting lineup consisting of Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Kevon Looney. GSW: JaMychal Green (right lower leg infection) and Jonathan Kuminga (right foot sprain) are probable. CLE: Donovan Mitchell (strained left groin) is questionable. With or without Mitchell, the Cavs are a much improved and deep team this season. The Warriors reserves who did see action – Kevon Looney, Anthony Lamb and Donte DiVincenzo – combined for just 10 points on Thursday, and the Dubs will probably need more production than that if they’re to come with a winning road trip in tow. Stephen Curry had 29 points to lead the Dubs, who also had 20-plus points from Klay Thompson, Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins, while Draymond Green finished one assist shy of a triple-double. The Dubs have split their first four games of the trip and will wrap it up on Friday against the owners of the best home record in the Eastern Conference (19-4). Playing on the back end of a back-to-back, and after an emotional back-and-forth battle in a NBA Finals rematch in a tough road environment no less, it’s probable that Head Coach Steve Kerr will go deeper into his bench on Friday. In an NBA Finals rematch worthy of designation, the defending champs took the fight to the Celtics, owners of the best record in the league, ...

That will come during the next 37 games and in the postseason. It was in OT that Tatum and Brown combined to send the Warriors off the floor with a thick layer of disappointment. “It’s a long haul to get through the NBA season, particularly in the case of Steph, Draymond, and Klay, you’ve been at it for a decade, playing deep into the playoffs. This was not a case of the Warriors sealing their doom with turnovers or multiple instances of questionable shot selection. If the Warriors bring attitude and fortitude to the degree displayed in Boston, their championship will be defended with honor and self-respect. Doing so might make it tempting to reach the conclusion that, yes, their championship window is indeed closing. The Warriors stayed with the Celtics for four quarters mostly because they frustrated MVP candidate Jayson Tatum – again. “I loved the grit. Levels that if consistently applied will serve them well for the regular season and beyond. If one more shot drops through the net – Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, and Jordan Poole combined to shoot 4-of-18 in the quarter – they win. The Warriors throughout didn’t shoot particularly well, only 40 percent from the field. “I loved the effort,” Kerr said.

Kuminga missed eight straight games due to a sprained right foot that had him in a walking boot for a short time. Coach Steve Kerr said before Thursday's loss he's "hopeful" Kuminga and Green are good to go, and the Warriors need their size right now. Curry (left hip tightness) played 43 minutes in the Warriors' loss, scoring 29 points while struggling to find his shot, especially late in the game. 2 overall pick has played in 19 of the Warriors' 45 games this season. 30, the same day as the Warriors' comeback win against the Portland Trail Blazers at Chase Center. He still hasn't played both games of a back-to-back since returning from two season-ending leg injuries a year ago, but hope remains he will be able to do so later this season.

Celtics Beat Warriors, Despite Off Night From Jayson Tatum (The New York Times)

Boston beat Golden State and has the N.B.A.'s best record. But the Celtics aren't perfect, and neither is their star.

He shot only 9 of 27 from the field, though he made up for it in other ways, collecting 34 points, 19 rebounds and 6 assists — a stat line that would have made other players proud. Tatum kept repeating that phrase — that it was just one game — as if he were trying to convince himself that it was true. Mazzulla said he had a brief conversation with Tatum about whether to leave him in the game early in the fourth quarter. On Thursday, his teammates backed him up, another sign of growth for a young group that continues to move forward. That night was a triumph for Golden State, which celebrated in a club section of the arena until 5 a.m. Before Thursday’s game, the Celtics tried to maintain a more balanced perspective. And, of course, there was Tatum, who shot the ball poorly (often while being defended by Wiggins) and appeared gassed by the end. In mid-December, they lost five of six games, a skid that included back-to-back losses to the lottery-bound Orlando Magic. Facing the Golden State Warriors in their much-anticipated return to Boston, Tatum tossed passes into the hands of defenders. And Tatum committed seven turnovers, including two in the final 74 seconds of regulation that would have gotten him booted from noontime hoops at the South Shore Y.M.C.A.

NBA Admits Warriors Were Robbed vs. Celtics (Sports Illustrated)

The NBA's last two minute report revealed the refs hurt the Golden State Warriors against the Boston Celtics.

Finally, the NBA admits that Al Horford should have been called for a 24-second violation on his shot attempt with six seconds remaining in the game. The breakdown from the league admitted that Jayson Tatum should have been called for a three-second violation with 1:46 left to go in overtime, which would have resulted in a free throw for the Warriors. Had the appropriate shot clock violation been called, that play would have been irrelevant. Just seconds later, Al Horford should have been whistled for a three-second violation on offense, which would have given the Warriors possession back. Because of this, last two minute reports are even more frustrating for teams who were negatively impacted, because they are forced to live with an outcome that could have gone a different direction had the officiating been accurate. Kerr's rational is that a shorter season would better protect players' health, balance the schedule and improve the overall quality of play. Kerr has been juggling his rotation lately while trying to balance bringing players back from injuries and getting them adequate rest. I think you'd see way fewer games missed from players." Buckley: Celtics' win over Warriors provides highlights, lowlights ... (The Athletic)

True, these Warriors aren't quite right yet. But there were enough moments in "showdown" (good and bad) to add intrigue to regular season.

Playing horribly against the Warriors in the early going didn’t cost them anything — come on, they won the game — and yet there’s plenty of meat on the bone if complaining and worrying is your thing. It instantly made the remainder of the regular season more compelling. But because it was Tatum who lost the ball, and because these were the Golden State Warriors providing the opposition, it made all the difference in the world. The man is having what many people are calling an MVP season, but he also has a habit of being very un-MVP-like when too many spotlights are pointed in his direction. Oh, and I guess we need to go here as well: The Warriors beat the Celtics last month in San Francisco. Again, this was just before halftime, as in a long, long time before the Celtics would steady themselves and claim a 121-118 overtime victory.
