Inside The Nets Struggles Without Kevin Durant: 'This Isn't Last Year ... (Sports Illustrated)

Despite dropping their third straight game, the Brooklyn Nets are confident the team can figure it out with Kevin Durant sidelined.

"I'm going to continue to preach that to the group. Brooklyn currently sits in the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference standings following the loss to San Antonio. "The three things I said to our group [is] being extremely professional, being consistent, and that's your approach, that's your mindset - and no excuses," Vaughn stated. In that troubled span, Brooklyn did not have Kyrie Irving as a full-time player due to his vaccination refusal and the City of New York's vaccination mandates. The Nets went 5-16 in his injury absence, tumbling from the second seed in the Eastern Conference standings down to the Play-In Bracket (eighth seed). "We didn't know if everybody wanted to be here at the time.

Nets aren't making 'excuses' as they keep sliding without Kevin Durant (The Athletic)

In their first three games without an injured Durant, the Nets offense ranks last in the league. Irving also sat out Tuesday's loss.

[Phoenix](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/suns/), 12th in the Western Conference standings and without its own stars in [Chris Paul](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/chris-paul-T2sfGOMEeDjjOrJH/) and [Devin Booker](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/devin-booker-4wodYWTaBEfNXJjo/), which could give the Nets another chance to win. And so I’m gonna continue to stress to the group, I’m not gonna give them excuses. “I said to the guys going into the game we were going to change the rotations a little bit. We get a chance to play the game, you get a chance to compete. We had plenty enough bodies to get the job done today, we ran through everybody, so everybody got a chance to be a part of it and be a part of the winning and be a part of the losing. [Kevin Durant](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/kevin-durant-ho6h1sijyi2PAURU/), the [Nets](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/nets/) have made one thing clear as a team — this year’s stint without their franchise star won’t compare to a year ago. [James Harden](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/james-harden-xj359Qh34ugWFbVp/) a rallying cry for the Nets, but they have yet to win since Durant was ruled out with a sprained MCL a week ago. Vaughn has pushed for the Nets to shoot more 3s with his stars off the court but got just 24 shots in San Antonio, most of which were missed open looks. When Brooklyn was 12-1 in December with a healthy roster, the Nets had the league’s top offense and a top-10 defense. Irving’s absence was missed since the Spurs had an alpha dog on a night the Nets didn’t. But I think the things that we can take care of are the turnovers and the rebounding.

Nets drop putrid game in San Antonio, 106-98 (NetsDaily)

I wrote an article this morning in response to a New York Times piece on the lack of joy that comes from watching Brooklyn Nets basketball "How could that ...

The Nets face the Suns in Phoenix on Thursday at 10:00 p.m. - Ben Simmons with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists recorded his first triple-double as a Net and 32nd of his career. The play before that, he made a 3 and pointed in my face. As we noted in the game preview, the Nets roster and staff are filled with former Spurs: Sean Marks, Jacque Vaughn, assistant coach Brian Keefe, assistant GM Andy Birdsong and director of coaching analytics Logan MacPhail. - At 23 years old, Nic Claxton is the youngest player to block three or more shots in nine straight games since 22-year-old Rudy Gobert with the Jazz in Jan. The deja-vu did not go down easy when Brooklyn scored just 17 points in the third period after making a run to tie the game up by halftime. No, it’s not just that, in the context of the season, down Kevin Durant and fighting for a very important playoff seed in a stacked conference, they needed to win. So yeah, there’s no such thing as a “must-win” in January, but things did not go swimmingly for Brooklyn in a game they would’ve loved to have. “We’ve just got to figure out how to play with each other without having KD, Kyrie out there on the court. And yet, again, due to San Antonio’s own incompetence, Brooklyn had a real chance to win the game! He shut down guards on drives, met wings on cuts, and bigs at the summit. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut, because wow, the Brooklyn Nets followed it up by participating in one of the worst displays of NBA basketball to date this season.

It was the fewest points scored by a Spurs opponent in the first quarter this season. Its season low for any quarter is 13 points in the third against Miami on Jan. … Brooklyn’s season-low output in the first quarter is 14 points, on Oct. Ben Simmons had a triple-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists for Brooklyn in the opener of a five-game trip. The play resulted in an offensive and technical foul on Morris, as well as a Flagrant 1 foul on Sochan, who pulled Morris to the court on the play. Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said he does not believe the injury is serious and is hopeful Irving can play Thursday in Phoenix. The previous low was 23 points by Minnesota on Oct. The Nets were scoreless for four minutes after Simmons made the game’s opening basket on a driving hook shot 23 seconds in. It was impressive because he used a lot of force and he kind of flipped me. My coaches and teammates put the ball in my hands, and I just make something happen.” “You seen the play before that he makes a 3 and he’s pointing in my face. He hit a 3-pointer following a missed 3 by Seth Curry, giving the Spurs an 87-82 lead.

Nets still confident they can win while Kevin Durant is out: 'no divide' (New York Post)

The Nets lost for a third straight time since Kevin Durant sprained his right MCL, but claim they won't implode in his absence like they did last season.

“I’m going to continue to preach that to the group. “Yeah, the three things I said to our group being extremely professional, being consistent — and that’s what’s your approach, that’s with your mindset — and no excuses,” Vaughn said. “I’m consistently in the lineup: That helps,” Irving said. After Durant sprained his MCL last season, the Nets went just 5-16 while he was out to fall from second in the Eastern Conference to eighth. Injury Report: Kyrie Irving's Status vs. Phoenix Suns (Sports Illustrated)

Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving missed the team's previous game with calf soreness, but it looks like the absence will only be that one game.

After a dominant winning streak that ascended Brooklyn to within a game of the top-seed, this recent skid has seen them fall back to 4th, with the Cleveland Cavaliers just percentage points behind them. That said, players like Kyrie Irving have been adamant that this year is different, and Thursday's game against Phoenix will be an opportunity to begin proving that. It's understandable that both Harden and the Nets may still feel some type of way about each other, but to think that team wasn't capable of winning an NBA Championship is just silly. Brooklyn Nets' Ben Simmons, right, drives against San Antonio Spurs' Jeremy Sochan during the first half of an NBA basketball game Tuesday, Jan.

Prior to the injury to Durant, the Nets had been playing some of their best basketball and had been drama free for more than a month. “I’m going to continue to preach that to the group. The comment seemed to also point to James Harden’s displeasure with Brooklyn towards the end of his short tenure in Kings County. A three-game losing streak and missing their best player still isn’t enough to worry the Nets just yet. Part of that belief stems from the much more congenial atmosphere among the group than last year. We’re going to figure it out.

Kyrie Irving expected to return for Nets after one-game nightmare (New York Post)

Kyrie Irving was a late scratch Tuesday at San Antonio with right calf soreness. The Nets went on to lose, 106-98, to the Spurs.

“I love this event and am proud to be doing this in New York,” Simmons said. I think guys have got to stay poised and stay together, and that’s what it is,” Ben Simmons said. “Obviously I’d like to have hit more 3s, but it’s just game rhythm, getting back in the game, flowing again. Everyone has to step up and do their job, regardless of who’s going to be starting or who’s playing.” He didn’t fly with the Nets on this five-game road trip, and won’t be reevaluated until early next week. Irving was upgraded to probable for their game Thursday at the Suns.

What We Learned from the Spurs' win over the Nets (Pounding The Rock)

San Antonio defeats a shorthanded Eastern Conference contender with a refreshing defensive showing.

In an encouraging turn of events, the determined slasher put together some timely fourth-quarter heroics, scoring 14 of his career-high 36 points in the final frame as the Silver and Black outplayed Brooklyn in the clutch. - The Spurs were the not-so-proud owners of the worst defensive rating (119.9) in league history heading into their Tuesday night matchup, so of course, they held the second-place Nets under 100 points while leaning on their defense to snap their five-game losing streak. The Silver and Black are at a talent deficit in virtually every contest, and ingraining sound fundamentals won’t get in the way of their losses organically adding up.
