The Cleveland Browns are hiring Jim Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday.

Schwartz rose to prominence as the Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator (2001-2008), which helped him land the Detroit Lions head coaching gig. He spent one season as DC in Buffalo in 2014. After his stint as a head coach, the fiery Schwartz returned to defensive coordinator duties.

The Browns are turning to Tennessee Titans senior defensive assistant Jim Schwartz to be their next defensive coordinator.

I would imagine that maybe he would look at players for the draft, as we get down here and we get a different set of eyes, a guy that has been around the league for a lot of years and has been successful." When defensive coordinator Gregg Williams (a future Browns coach) left to become the Bills head coach in 2001, Schwartz was elevated to be his replacement. Schwartz started his NFL career with the Browns in 1993 as a personnel scout under Bill Belichick. Certainly, that position in particular, as Kevin selects a defensive coordinator, we will link up with that individual and make sure that we are searching for individuals who have the traits and skills necessary to perform their jobs within that.” [scheme preference the day after the season finale](https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/sports/pro/browns/2023/01/09/john-johnson-iii-sense-of-urgency-cleveland-browns-fire-joe-woods-brian-flores-jarod-mayo-defense/69790456007/). As he works his way into what we are doing, it has been good to see him meeting with different guys and meeting with the defense and meeting with me. A key to the success of Schwartz's wide-nine front look is defensive tackles, an area where the Browns struggled last season. While Schwartz was defensive coordinator in 2019, Berry served as Vice President of Football Operations before he returned to the Browns in his current role as general manager. The Browns will be the fourth time in Schwartz's coaching career that he's served as a defensive coordinator. “We will always try and match the personnel to the schematic vision for the coach," Berry said during a press conference the day after the season finale. Man-to-man coverage could be a benefit to the Browns' secondary, where they boast a Pro Bowl-caliber No.

The Cleveland Browns are hiring Jim Schwartz as the team's defensive coordinator. Initial impressions as well as questions for the man tasked with fixing ...

They must upgrade the defensive line if Schwartz is going to enjoy the same level of success he has in the past. Jim Schwartz has a big job in front of him, but a good base of talent. Should we expect the Browns to make a trade or sign a big free agent? What Schwartz has done has worked, but the game continues to evolve. It may further illuminate how aggressive the Browns are willing to be both with their salary cap and draft assets. If they were already putting in the work necessary to be great, Schwartz could get more of that from their teammates. There are a number of things I believe Schwartz can bring to the Browns defense. He's also someone who's inclined to try to take away the middle of the field, all things which Woods endeavored to do. General Manager Andrew Berry has been able to amass talented players, but a group that lacked the necessary direction and leadership has led to some lackluster results on the field as well as problems off of it. Woods often had Garrett lined up out wide, squeezing the opponent with the goal of forcing runs inside and creating a bottleneck for quarterbacks. The Browns interviewed a quality field of candidates to fill their vacant defensive coordinator position. The Browns have a professional offense.

Browns hire hard-nosed Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator in ... (cleveland.com)

Jim Schwartz got his start in the NFL as a Browns scout in the Bill Belichick era from 1993-95, and has an appreciation for the team and city.

The Browns have a young defense, with rising second-year players in cornerback Martin Emerson, defensive Alex Wright and Winfrey; and rising third-year starters in Greg Newsome II, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Grant Delpit. Desai was the only other candidate with coordinator on his resume, but only one season with the Bears, in 2021. In 2022, the Titans were tied for 18th with 29 sacks. It’s every D-lineman’s dream to play in a system like this.” Of the Browns’ four candidates, Schwartz, a 29-year NFL coaching veteran, was by far the oldest and most experienced. Schwartz, Flores and Desai were in the mix until Monday, the day Desai interviewed, but Kevin Stefanski opted for the candidate with the long, successful track record and one who’s scheme-diverse. Schwartz’ 4-3 base defense will fit the current personnel, but it remains to be seen if he’ll still run his trademark Wide-9 front, in which one or both edge-rushers are lined up wide. 1 against the run (79.2 her game), third in third-down defense (32.2 pct.) and No. “He needs control of the defense, and that’s how it is whether it be people talking during walk-throughs, whether that be coaches, players, whatever. There are a lot of different ways to skin a cat.” The following week, Clowney was benched for the first series of the victory over Cincinnati. “There’s a lot of different ways to teach,” Schwartz said.

A person familiar with the decision says the Cleveland Browns have hired former Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz as their defensive coordinator.

When Schwartz was with Buffalo in 2014, the Bills led the league in sacks and finished fourth in yards allowed. Schwartz began his pro career as a scout with Cleveland in the 1990s. Schwartz spent the past two seasons as a defensive adviser for Tennessee.

Ozzie Newsome, Marvin Lewis on Jim Schwartz: 'You could just tell ... (Akron Beacon Journal)

Long before Jim Schwartz was established as a defensive coordinator, Ozzie Newsome and Marvin Lewis saw potential in an unproven coach in the 1990s.

Jimmy was a great compliment to him, but Jimmy just continued to expand his role and his opportunity and his input with me being the coordinator as well, as far as game planning and everything that way." But as Jimmy left and went on and coached with Jim Washburn there in Tennessee and so forth, then they got more into the wide nine and the things that they have continued to develop since then. Schwartz would serve as a defensive assistant for the Titans' 1999 AFC championship team, before finally getting that coveted linebackers coach role in 2000. That didn't stop Lewis from making sure he was a key part of the defensive staff, especially assisting with the linebackers. "When we came over from Cleveland we had had only so many spots in the scouting staff, and (Baltimore head coach) Ted (Marchibroda) had hired Marvin to be the defensive coordinator. The football knowledge was one thing that impressed Lewis, who was in his first as a defensive coordinator after having coached linebackers with the Steelers. Schwartz would spend the next two seasons with the Ravens in a similar role. The then-26-year-old Schwartz was just another of Belichick's famed "slappies" when he got his start with the original franchise for the 1993 season. The thing which set him apart, though, was his ability to connect with the players themselves. The last time he was in Cleveland, he [did a lot of things for the Browns](https://www.staugustine.com/story/sports/nfl/2020/01/08/browns-interviewing-eagles-dc-jim-schwartz-who-got-nfl-start-in-cleveland-under-bill-belichick/1934852007/), but coaching wasn't one of them. The Ravens hired Schwartz to be a defensive quality control coach under Lewis. "I don't think you could just sit there and say, 'This is what he did.' We would, we all did what Bill (Belichick) asked us to do, bill and Mike (Lombardi) asked us to do."

Who is Jim Schwartz? What can the Browns expect from him? (Dawgs By Nature)

The news hit on Monday that the Browns had hired Jim Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator. The franchise interviewed several football men for this ...

And even if his strongest opponent is his head coach and GM, Schwartz is willing to be that adversary in exchange for a turnaround for this defense. Schwartz was one of the few retained in the move and named Defensive Quality Control coordinator and linebackers coach. He was hired as a graduate assistant and linebackers coach at the University of Maryland in 1989. When head coach Doug Marrone resigned and the franchise hired Rex Ryan as the new head coach, Ryan brought on board his usual DC in Greg Roman instead of retaining Schwartz. Plus, after being an accomplished defensive mind in one organization for 10 years including eight as their DC, he had been ready for this next step for several seasons and yet took his time for the right fit. With Schwartz’s system, players are taught a barrage of moves, twists, alignments, and techniques in order to accomplish using just four players up front to create all the chaos. Speed is the recipe for Schwartz’s linebacker corps and before agreeing to the hire, he must have been well-pleased with the current roster. Throughout his coaching career as a longtime DC and then head coach of the Schwartz usually has featured a pair of defensive linemen as his set pieces and then filled in with more than competent players for this group. For example, in 2020 Tennessee blitzed on 28.7% of defensive snaps (ranked 16th) but the front four was able to hurry the QB on 7.2% of their plays (29th). But he was in charge of breaking down the opponent’s tendencies and how the other team has been responding to certain blitzes, coverage packages, and pressures. Maybe the biggest reason to bring in a leader such as Schwartz is Myles Garrett.
