Michigan State basketball Malik Hall misses game vs. Purdue, likely ... (Detroit Free Press)

MIchigan State basketball will be without senior forward Malik Hall on Monday when the Spartans host No. 3 Purdue in East Lansing (2:30 p.m./Fox).

He started the first four games before his stress reaction and averaged 31.8 minutes with 12.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in the first four games. Hall missed eight games in November and December with a stress reaction in his left foot, and he twisted it against Michigan on Jan. 30 against Buffalo, he has come off the bench in the Spartans’ past five games and posted 8.2 points and 3.2 rebounds in 19.9 minutes. “Malik's about his calmness on the floor. “When he's on the floor, there's just a settling effect. The Boilermakers made six of their final seven shots, including a 3-pointer from Caleb Furst and three buckets from Fletcher Loyer. He was wearing a walking boot and in street clothes on the Breslin Center bench as the Spartans suffered a 64-63 loss to the third-ranked Boilermakers. I don't mean his calmness, I mean mine,” Izzo said on his pregame radio show. Now that we're in the Big Ten, it's gonna be even harder because of the physicality of each game." "It's not easy," senior forward Joey Hauser said of losing Hall. "I appreciate it that Malik handled it so well," Izzo said.

No. 3 Purdue storms out of East Lansing with a 64-63 win (NCAA.com)

Purdue heads to East Lansing to take on Michigan State in a Monday matinee Big Ten men's basketball battle.

This will be the 44th time these two teams have met, with Michigan State leading the all-time series 26-17, including a 15-4 Spartans advantage at home. At 4-2 in the Big Ten, Sparty has a chance to move into a tie for first place in the conference with a win on Monday, emphasizing their improvement in recent weeks where they have won seven of their last eight games. Michigan State suffered a tough loss on Friday on the road against Illinois. The game will air on FOX. The Spartans have played their last two games away from the friendly confines of the Breslin Center, with a win at Wisconsin prefacing Friday's loss. Michigan State is badly struggling, shooting 2-11 with four turnovers at the under-12 media timeout. Loyer, now Purdue's all-time single-season record holder for three-pointers made as a freshman, has hit a couple of huge shots this year for Purdue including a late go-ahead three in Purdue's win over Ohio State. The preseason favorites in the Big Ten enter Monday's contest with a 5-1 record in conference, with the lone loss coming at home to a surprising Rutgers team. Despite a hot start from Purdue, they missed their last five shots of the half and turned the ball over three times in the last two minutes. We've got a good one at the Breslin Center. Zach Edey already has nine points in the second half. Purdue leads 27-25 at halftime.

Michigan State basketball can't overcome Zach Edey's career day in ... (Detroit Free Press)

Zach Edey scored a career high 32 points with 17 rebounds, to help third-ranked Purdue escape Michigan State basketball with a 64-63 victory Monday.

The Spartans went to halftime trailing, 27-25, and on a 14-3 run over the final 5:09, holding the Boilers without a field goal over the final 5:47. But MSU freshman center Carson Cooper swooped in to collect the ball and quickly scored a layup before Edey could retreat. After a pair of Edey free throws, Hoggard again drove into the lane, and the Purdue big man swatted his shot. Walker came off a screen at the top of the key and caught Hoggard's pass in stride. Then with inside 10 seconds left before the break, Hoggard delivered a nasty crossover dribble that sent Morton sliding across the floor. Refs reviewed and put 1.8 seconds on the clock, with MSU getting the ball on the left baseline across from its bench. The three-point play flipped the energy in Breslin from angry to hopeful. The Spartans still had another chance after a timeout and inbounded the ball from the baseline under Purdue's basket. Hall wore a walking boot when he came out with the team before tipoff. The 6-1 Walker scored his MSU-high with 30 points on 12 for 23 shooting, including 19 in the second half and 14 with under seven minutes left. The senior guard hunted and pecked his way into the paint in the final 20 seconds, backed out to the right wing, delivered a crossover dribble to free himself and hit a jump shot with 10.8 seconds to play over the Boilermakers' Ethan Morton. Whether that affected the Spartans early was hard to tell, particularly because Edey dominated.

What Purdue Center Zach Edey Said Following Road Win Over ... (Wolverine Maven)

Purdue junior center Zach Edey met with the media following the team's 64-63 win on the road against Michigan State at the Breslin Center.

When someone wants to switch on someone to hit a step-back on me, I mean I just kind of have to shake their hand. 3 Purdue basketball improved to 17-1 and 6-1 in Big Ten play with a win over Michigan State on Monday at the Breslin Center. We all kind of know that, we all know he has the ultimate trust in himself. But they didn't, and I got to score the ball this time which is kind of fun. So I spun back middle and tried to dunk the ball again but I couldn't do that that time. Obviously, we're going to move, we're going to cut. I think today he probably hit me about 10 times in the post, he was really getting me the ball. But they didn't, and I tried to go score the ball. I was kind of expecting some type of double, but they were doing that all game with the one-on-one with the hard scrapes. Everyone was really getting me the ball, that's something I really appreciate obviously. 3 Purdue basketball to a 64-63 win over Michigan State on Monday at the Breslin Center. Here's the complete transcript of everything he had to say, including the postgame video.

Michigan State basketball: Malik Hall could come back sooner than ... (Spartan Avenue)

Michigan State basketball fans got some good news on Tuesday afternoon as Tom Izzo stated that Malik Hall is out of his walking boot.

The Spartans melted down in the final 10 minutes when Hall went down at Illinois after controlling the entire game and if he doesn’t leave the contest, MSU wins. And that’s the best team in the conference, on paper. Did he re-injure his foot that kept him out about a month earlier in the season?

What Purdue Coach Matt Painter Said Following Road Victory ... (Wolverine Maven)

Purdue coach Matt Painter met with the media following the team's 64-63 win on the road against Michigan State at the Breslin Center.

They went on a snake, so we downed the ball screen on the wing, and then when they snake and they get to the rim right there, they have a lot of success with his pull-up right there. You know, it wears on your opponent when you got someone that kind of size that can stay in the game the whole time and still play physical basketball. 3 Purdue basketball improved to 17-1 and 6-1 in Big Ten play with a win over Michigan State on Monday at the Breslin Center. And that's where just the off-ball stuff for him, he just gets away to the corner, and they make a great read, and that's tough for him. Coaches don't just have an abundance of guys that they can go with and say hey, we'll just give the ball to him, we're on the road. And you get some dudes that want the basketball but I don't know if it's the best decision in the world. I was going to call it though, but we were going to dribble it and bring it to the side. [Edey] is so damn big that if you can get it in there to the side, you sometimes can go directly to him from the side, which you wouldn’t think like you’re going to get a post-up there. And now you've got guards in closeouts so you can get your shot but then you can also get your drives. Then if they take it away, you can get it the other way and he can pin them, and then it’s really hard. And he really didn’t struggle in the first half, he just got into foul trouble, so he didn’t play as much. Now they can go to the assistants and find out what are the plays we run that are better late-clock type or late-game type plays.
