A Proclamation on Martin Luther King, Jr., Federal Holiday, 2023 ... (The White House)

Today, we honor the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by continuing his unfinished work to redeem the soul of.

I encourage all Americans to observe this day with appropriate civic, community, and service projects in honor of Dr. King, I know that there is nothing beyond this Nation’s capacity and that we will fulfill the promise of America for all Americans — perfecting the Union we love and must protect. And we serve to bring together a Nation in our dedication to these ideals. It will demand honest reflection about how far we have come and how far we have yet to go to be the best version of ourselves. We work to embed equity and opportunity into all of the Federal Government’s policies and programs. By creating good-paying jobs, investing in the middle class, improving access to affordable housing and quality education, and closing the racial and gender wealth gaps, we can give hardworking families the dignity Dr. By lowering costs and improving access, we can make health care a right and not just a privilege. King called for greater fairness in our health care system, and my Administration is pushing to put quality, affordable health care within reach of all people — especially the most vulnerable and marginalized Americans. From the pulpit to the podium to the streets, Dr. He gave us a roadmap to unify, to heal, and to sustain the blessings of the Nation to all of its people. It also meant finding a way to deal with our grievances without animosity, in a way that recognized the interconnectedness of all humanity and allowed us to move forward together. King came of age in the South during a time when racial discrimination was the law of the land.

Opinion | Martin Luther King Jr.'s Other Dreams (The New York Times)

In 1967, he delivered a powerful sermon about the struggle for global peace.

We have been on a real steamed fish kick in the Bouie household, in large part because the meals are easy to throw together, and I’ve embraced the wonder of frozen fish, which — for someone living in the middle of Virginia — is typically fresher and higher quality than the “fresh” stuff. Set up a steamer, large enough to accommodate the plate, with 2 inches of water in the bottom. “I’ve seen too much hate to want to hate, myself, and I’ve seen hate on the faces of too many sheriffs, too many white citizens’ councilors, and too many Klansman of the South to want to hate, myself; and every time I see it, I say to myself, hate is too great a burden to bear.” This recipe is a favorite for both parents and kids and doesn’t require much in the way of ingredients beyond what you probably already have in your pantry. “I watched that dream turn into a nightmare as I moved through the ghettos of the nation and saw my Black brothers and sisters perishing on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity, and saw the nation doing nothing to grapple with the Negroes’ problem of poverty.” And here, in this sermon, he makes clear that what a peaceful and equal society demands — that is, what a truly democratic society demands — is our mutual recognition of each other, here and everywhere. [David Waldstreicher](https://www.bostonreview.net/articles/the-long-american-counter-revolution/) on the radical historian Gerald Horne and his new book, “The Counter-Revolution of 1836: Texas Slavery & Jim Crow and the Roots of U.S. I think that this is among King’s most powerful sermons, both rhetorically and in the radical humanity of its message. Our problems are global problems: a rising tide of chauvinism and authoritarianism; corruption that touches and distorts representative institutions around the world; and, of course, climate change. No individual can live alone; no nation can live alone, and as long as we try, the more we are going to have war in this world. We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality.” With our annual celebration of King’s life on the immediate horizon, I thought it would be worthwhile to look at one of his lesser-known, although by no means obscure, speeches, one in which he discusses the struggle for global peace.
