Andrew McCutchen, who was named the 2013 NL MVP when he was playing in Pittsburgh, has agreed to a one-year deal worth $5 million with the Pirates for the ...
McCutchen has since played for the Phillies and Brewers. He won a Gold Glove in 2012 for his defensive work in center field and finished in the top five in the NL voting every year from 2012 to 2015. Later the same year, the Giants flipped him to the Yankees. McCutchen established himself as an impact player almost immediately: In 2011, he was named to the All-Star team, the first of five consecutive seasons in which he earned that honor. In 2014, McCutchen led the league in on-base percentage (.410) and OPS (.952). The Pirates drafted McCutchen with the 11th overall pick in 2005 and promoted him to the big leagues in 2009.

Former National League MVP Andrew McCutchen has accepted a one-year, $5 million offer from his first club, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He began his pro career after the Pirates made him a first-round amateur draft choice in 2005. All have one-year contracts and could be valuable mid-season trade chips when contenders look to beef up for the stretch drive. But he has several goals to shoot for this season; he’s 52 hits away from reaching 2,000 and 13 home runs short of 300. But his career .369 on-base percentage shows he has a good batting eye, drawing a healthy share of walks. McCutchen, a five-time All-Star, spent his first nine seasons in Pittsburgh, leading the club to its last three playoff appearances, in 2013, 2014, and 2015. A year later, he led the NL with a .410 on-base percentage and .952 OPS.
Drafted 11th overall by the Pirates in 2006, the 36-year-old spent the first nine seasons of his MLB career in Pittsburgh.

Andrew McCutchen is going home. The Pirates agreed to a one-year deal with the former face of their franchise. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.

The allure of young talent alone gave Pittsburgh fans something to look forward to in 2023, but the return of a beloved franchise figure and one of the best players in recent Pirates adds an extra layer of sentimentality and, hopefully, another productive bat. The Pirates don’t project as contenders this season, and McCutchen isn’t likely to push them over that edge, but the team has spent more this winter than in recent years. That gave the Bucs some extra club control and cost certainty over a player who was then the face of the franchise, but as is so often the case with the Pirates and other low-payroll clubs, McCutchen surfaced as a trade candidate in the late stages of that contract. However, logic dictates that there’s no real connection here; McCutchen can’t play center field regularly at this point in his career, and even if Reynolds were traded, the Bucs would surely reallocate much of that playing time to younger outfield options they hope can be part of the team’s core moving forward. [McCutchen was traded to the Giants](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/01/pirates-trade-andrew-mccutchen-giants.html) in what was an unpopular move at the time but now looks like perhaps the best swap in former GM Neal Huntington’s tenure. He hasn’t topped 93 innings of center field work since 2017, his last year with the Pirates, though, and at 36 years old it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll return to logging meaningful time at his former position. The first season of that deal saw continued production early on, but McCutchen suffered a torn ACL that June, missed the remainder of the season, and has since settled in closer to league-average in terms of offensive output. A true cornerstone player, McCutchen led the Pirates to their three most recent postseason appearances, in 2013, 2014 and 2015 — each a Wild Card berth. The free-agent outfielder has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Pirates, [reports](https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2023/01/13/pittsburgh-pirates-andrew-mccutchen-mlb-offseason-free-agency/stories/202301130059) Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He immediately ranked among the sport’s top overall prospects after a strong post-draft showing in the minors in ’05, and by 2009 he’d reached the Majors and played his way into a fourth-place Rookie of the Year finish in the National League, hitting .286/.365/.471.
A person with knowledge of the agreement tells the Associated Press veteran centerfielder Andrew McCutchen has agreed to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh ...
He's bounced around since being traded to the Giants, splitting time between San Francisco and the New York Yankees in 2018 then spent three seasons with the Phillies from 2019-21 before playing for Milwaukee last season. McCutchen helped guide the Pirates to three straight playoff berths from 2013-15 after two decades of losing before being traded to San Francisco in January 2018 in a deal that included outfielder Bryan Reynolds, then a prospect in the Giants organization. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement is pending the completion of a physical.

[Mackey adds](https://twitter.com/JMackeyPG/status/1613940652202496006) that the deal will be worth $5 million if finalized. It'll likely be a summer of milestones.— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) Over those nine seasons with the Pirates, McCutchen was one of the best players in baseball. In related matters, the Pirates enjoyed some of their best seasons in many years, and McCutchen as the beloved star of those teams established himself as a franchise bedrock.
It's a story that began with respect for a former player, a franchise legend and the most obvious link to the Pirates' last three playoff seasons.
And if there’s a situation where the Pirates are out of it and McCutchen has a chance to chase a ring, well, they’ll cross that bridge when they get there. “They brought him back thinking, ‘Hey, we’re bringing in a staple over the last decade, a guy who came up through the organization, won an MVP and brought back winning ways. Would McCutchen displace some of the outfield prospects the Pirates have worked to groom? However, at this point, sources have said it’s more likely McCutchen plays an additional season in Pittsburgh than he’s flipped at the trade deadline. Knowing McCutchen’s side, Nutting approached general manager Ben Cherington about a week ago to talk about the Pirates legend. Given his place here, the worst thing they could do was deliver false hope, letting him think there was a job available, then yanking it away at the last second. A five-time All-Star and National League MVP in 2013, McCutchen wanted to ensure he’d have a meaningful role in Pittsburgh. It was the candid McCutchen Pirates fans know and love, shooting his shot and stating his desire. It was a somewhat-risky proposition knowing McCutchen might have other offers. According to those close with McCutchen, the Pirates’ ongoing rebuild and current push have reminded him of what he endured from 2009-12, then what it felt like once the wall came tumbling down in 2013. Everything shifted with a text message sent from McCutchen to Pirates owner Bob Nutting during the middle portion of last week. It also involves an owner who’s no stranger to criticism and a general manager who has been busier than expected this offseason.
McCutchen is back to his original team, hoping to progress and help the Pirates bounce back from two consecutive 100-loss seasons.
After all, he is already very familiar with the club. He was also a five-time All-Star with the Pirates, earning a Gold Glove and four Silver Sluggers. The veteran is heading back to the team that drafted him 18 years ago after agreeing to a one-year deal worth $5 million.
