Michigan basketball loses late lead, falls in overtime at Iowa (mlive.com)

After Michigan sophomore Kobe Bufkin hit a pull-up jumper with 29 seconds left to put Michigan ahead 79-75, he fouled Payton Sandfort, who made the 3 anyway.

With Dickinson defending, McCaffrey took advantage with a 3 to put Iowa ahead 40-39. It gave him 17 points and Michigan a 25-20 lead. Michigan scored the next two baskets and led by seven with 7.5 minutes left. A Sandfort 3 gave Iowa the lead, but Howard swished a wide-open corner 3 to silence the crowd. It was a rare instance of Michigan’s two centers, Dickinson and Reed, playing at the same time, with Williams sitting the final 11:30 of the half. Half a minute later, the Hawkeyes grabbed their third and fourth offensive rebounds. Murray scored on a drive; drove and delivered a wraparound pass for a layup; and scored in transition. Michigan called timeout, and rolled with its starters. Williams’ driving basket ended Michigan’s overtime drought, and Michigan got the necessary stop at the other end. After Michigan sophomore Kobe Bufkin hit a pull-up jumper with 29 seconds left to put Michigan ahead 79-75, he fouled Payton Sandfort, who made the 3 anyway. He split a pair of free throws, and McDaniel missed a 3 at the other end. Dickinson was fouled at the other end but missed the front end of the one-and-one.

Five takeaways: Michigan basketball vs. Iowa (WolverinesWire)

Kobe Bufkin fould Payton Sandfort on a 3 point attempt and of course the shot went into. That sent Sandfort to the line where he hit his foul shot. Dug McDaniel ...

The maize and blue will need to see McDaniel continue to soar for that to come true. Entering Thursday, Howard’s career high was 21 points and the freshman had that tied in the first half. The Hawkeyes love running and it proved true in overtime. But on Thursday, Michigan had a full-fledged track meet with the high-tempo Iowa Hawkeyes. Jett Howard and company shot lights out and the Wolverines did everything Iowa likes to do and then some. The Hawkeyes controlled overtime and Michigan fell apart.

Michigan basketball collapses late on Jett Howard's career night ... (Detroit Free Press)

Jett Howard scored a career-high 34 points but Michigan basketball coughed up a lead late in the second half and lost at Iowa, 93-84, in overtime.

With Dickinson and Howard off the floor, Bufkin went to work and used a Tarris Reed Jr. After a Dickinson face-up jumper, Murray buried another 3-pointer from the corner to get back within one before Filip Rebraca hit a driving slam to give Iowa its first lead of the game, 14-13. The two would finish the final 6:55 of the first half on the court and outscore Iowa, 11-8, during that stretch. Howard knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing, before a live ball turnover led to an uncontested transition layup for McDaniel. "It's also kind of tough to win ball games when you only shoot six free throws and the other team shoots 22," Howard said. Then after consecutive Dug McDaniel turnovers, Howard hit another 3; this time from the left corner after Bufkin drove baseline and swung the ball from underneath the hoop. From there, it was all Hawkeyes (11-6, 3-3 Big Ten), who scored the first eight points of overtime before Terrance Williams II hit a fadeaway with 1:39 to play. "We need him out there on the floor because the guy's a gamer. A Hunter Dickinson tip-in with 2:18 left made it a seven-point game before Iowa closed regulation on a 9-2 run. "The first two minutes (of overtime), we didn't look like we had any confidence, I will say that," Howard said. "A lack of defense on our part, Sandfort getting too many open looks," said Michigan coach Juwan Howard after the game of what went wrong. Michigan (9-7, 3-2 Big Ten) led by seven with less than two minutes to play and by four with less than 30 seconds in regulation after Kobe Bufkin's jumper from the elbow.

Michigan basketball: Wolverines squander late lead in 93-84 loss to ... (247Sports)

Payton Sandford made a game-tying four-point play in the final minute of regulation and hit an improbable shot behind his back in overtime to help lead Iowa ...

His block on Jett Howard with 8:26 to play was the first missed shot of the night for the freshman, and Murray’s triple tied the game at 30 a couple minutes later. He tallied the first 11 points of the night for Michigan as he led his team to a 13-9 lead at the first media timeout. Bufkin got the ball in to McDaniel, who drove into the paint but missed the rim with his floater. The Wolverines then built their largest lead of the night, 10 points, thanks to two buckets from Jett Howard followed by a Will Tschetter triple. The Hawkeyes scored the first eight points in overtime after erasing a seven-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation. Prior to the late collapse, the Wolverines had led for most of the night.

3 things we learned from Michigan Basketball loss to Iowa (GBMWolverine)

His career-high 34 points were wasted by the Wolverines and without that effort, U-M probably isn’t even in a position to win. Howard only gets 2.9 rebounds per game and he needs to be better in that area, as well as on defense. His dad could have left and been a first-round pick but stayed until after his junior year. He knocked down seven 3-pointers, including one from the half-court logo. It’s not a great spot to be in. U-M is now 9-7 and 3-2 in the Big Ten conference.

Good stories emerge as Iowa men's basketball overcomes Michigan ... (Hawk Central)

His extended run showed that the moment wasn't too big and with Josh Ogundele's status in question, Mulvey will be in line for more opportunities. It'll be interesting to see how much playing time Dix carves out over the next few games but he showed an ability to be a potential bench spark. He revealed that it's a new wrinkle McCaffery implemented in practice to help free up fellow freshman Dasonte Bowen for more off-ball opportunities. Several Hawkeyes contributed to the win (more on that a little later) but what pushed Iowa over the top on Thursday was a more connected defensive effort down the stretch. With a lineup change: inserting Sandfort and true freshman Josh Dix, the Hawkeyes turned it around to the tune of nine forced turnovers and 19 points off turnovers. After a 0-19 start from the field in Big Ten play, Sandfort is averaging 20 points per game during Iowa's win streak. I thought (we would) put a little more pressure whether it be up on a ball screen or tagging a (pick-and-roll) or getting over on the weak side. So you have to stay after them and you got to rebound." A trio of easy Michigan baskets gave the Wolverines a 51-44 lead at the 17:43 mark, which prompted a timeout and tongue-lashing from McCaffery. The Hawkeyes' shooting percentage was strong, but they only led for a handful of minutes in the overtime contest. But down the stretch, another red-hot shooting night from Payton Sandfort marked the difference in a gritty 93-84 win. For the majority of the game Iowa just couldn't get over the hump.
