Raiders evaluating trade market for Derek Carr; QB says goodbye ... (NFL.com)

Derek Carr's unceremonious benching brought his tumultuous 2022 season to an abrupt end. It also set him on a course for a potential split from the Raiders.

While the extension secured his immediate standing with the Raiders, it also gave them an exit route if necessary, leaving a dead cap number of just $5.6 million in 2023 if the team decided to cut or trade him before June 1. With little cap penalty to consider, the Raiders are doing just that. It also set him on a course for [a potential split](https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-expected-to-explore-trade-offers-for-qb-derek-carr-this-offseason) from the Raiders. In 2022, Carr struggled at times to produce points for the Raiders, who were expected to contend for the AFC West title thanks to the offseason acquisition of former Fresno State running mate Stidham was surprisingly effective, but the results -- two losses to end the season -- were far too familiar. Winning a championship is what I've always wanted and what I will continue to work towards."

Derek Carr pens goodbye letter to Raiders, should Washington ... (NBC Sports)

The Raiders quarterback penned a goodbye letter on Thursday morning to the only franchise he's ever played for.

Washington has attempted to solve its quarterback woes by bringing in a veteran in each of the past two offseasons. In order for the Commanders to acquire Carr, it will require giving up assets. Las Vegas had high hopes for the 2022 campaign, but it ended with a third place finish in the AFC West. One year later, the Commanders are in the exact same spot, searching for a quick fix. [Washington Commanders](https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/commanders) are back in the market for a quarterback after the Carson Wentz experiment failed. In 2022, Carr had the best supporting cast of his entire career. Yet, a ton of the same arguments were made in favor of why the Commanders acquired Wentz via trade last season. The following year, Carr went 12-3 as a starter, threw for 28 touchdowns, just six interceptions and finished third in MVP voting. We'll go through the entire landscape of who's available, we'll evaluate them, and we'll get to a consensus on somebody." And, there are reasons that suggest Washington could make a push to land the Raiders' signal-caller. If (and when) Carr becomes available this offseason, he'll instantly be one of the best potential veteran options for quarterback-needy teams. The Raiders can also release Carr this offseason for just a $5.2 million cap hit,

2 overall pick in the 2021 draft who struggled this season, and bring in a seasoned signal-caller to give the former BYU star the kind of mentorship [Wilson did not receive](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/01/05/zach-wilson-mike-lafleur/?itid=lk_inline_manual_13) at the start of his NFL career. Carolina also needs a permanent head coach, after firing Matt Rhule and ending the season with Steve Wilks at the helm, and if it gets an early commitment from Carr, he might get some input on that decision. Fortunately for Carr, there happen to be a number of franchises that could be in the market for a solid quarterback. [tell](https://www.sny.tv/articles/jets-owner-woody-johnson-absolutely-open-veteran-qb-no-playoff-mandate-2023) reporters that a veteran quarterback could be the “missing piece” for his team’s otherwise “loaded” roster. The only reason I have the Jets above the Colts here is that, after striking out with a succession of veteran passers in Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan, Indianapolis might be ready to go young at the position. It’s been even longer since Carr made a Pro Bowl team, with the most recent of his three nods coming in 2017, but he’s three years younger than Tannehill and could keep the offense afloat while the Titans decide whether the exceedingly raw Malik Willis can be a part of their future. Carr’s contract also stipulates that his $32.9 million salary for 2023 and $7.5 million of his scheduled 2024 salary become guaranteed unless the Raiders release him by Feb.

Raiders QB Derek Carr has 5 potential suitors in the NFL playoffs ... (SB Nation)

Now that Derek Carr is finished as the Raiders QB, see which of the NFL postseason teams could make sense him.

Yes, Tom Brady and Carr could switch places this offseason as the rumors are already swirling that the Raiders will make a play for Brady in free agency ... So turning to a veteran like Carr could appeal to the Giants. Yet, Smith might be interested to seeing what’s available to him on the open market. This may be a long shot, but there could be a circumstance in which the Ravens need a new quarterback. He could opt to see what’s out there on the open market. The Raiders are now evaluating the trade market for Carr, who has a no-trade clause that means he has to sign off on any prospective deal. Here are five teams in the postseason that could make sense as Carr suitors, based on circumstances at their current quarterback situation. He had a terrific 2022 season and the Seahawks and Smith will likely be interested in continuing their relationship. If the Dolphins are suddenly in the quarterback market three years after using the No. 5 overall pick on Tagovailoa, getting a veteran like Carr could be a strong option. So I look forward to a new city and a new team. Winning a championship is what I’ve always wanted and what I will continue to work toward.”
