Golden Globes 2023: How to Watch and What to Know About the ... (Vanity Fair)

A rundown on where to stream this year's Golden Globes—and the scandals the awards show must overcome to return in 2024.

[Los Angeles Times exposé](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-02-21/hfpa-golden-globes-2021) detailing [diversity problems](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-02-21/hfpa-golden-globes-2021-who-are-the-members) and [ethics complaints](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-02-21/hfpa-golden-globes-2021) within the HFPA, including the revelation that the organization didn’t have a [single Black member](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-02-21/hfpa-golden-globes-2021-who-are-the-members). The HFPA also hired [a chief diversity officer](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2021-11-03/hfpa-chief-diversity-officer-golden-globes); invited diverse members to join the [board of directors](https://www.goldenglobes.com/articles/hfpa-appoints-three-external-members-board-directors), [advisory board, and credentials committee](https://www.goldenglobes.com/articles/hfpa-names-three-outside-advisors-help-oversee-new-member-selection); and established a five-year [partnership](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2021-10-07/golden-globes-group-announces-partnership-with-naacp) with the NAACP. This shift will remove “the kind of conflicts of interest that were embedded in the organization that might have created the opportunity to be swayed by things other than just being authentic and having real integrity,” Boehly [told the outlet](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2022-12-22/the-new-golden-globes-is-now-a-business-with-a-billionaire-owner-and-paid-members). And the final death knell rang out when NBC [declined to air](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/05/golden-globes-cancel-nbc-hfpa) the splashy, booze-filled awards show, stating that it would be open to discussing a [2023 broadcast](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/05/golden-globes-cancel-nbc-hfpa) once “meaningful reform” had occurred. Then there’s the arrival of Todd Boehly, cofounder and chairman of Eldridge Industries, the parent company of the Globes’ longtime producer. [100 PR firms](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/03/golden-globes-boycott-publicists), as well as studios including Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia, announced they would not work with the group—or encourage their clients to attend the awards ceremony—until significant reform was enacted. [Los Angeles Times](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-02-21/hfpa-golden-globes-2021) pieces that exposed various injustices within the group, the Globes were denounced by large swaths of Hollywood and booted from NBC—their network TV home since 1996. Their comeback from [awards-show exile](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/05/golden-globes-cancel-nbc-hfpa) follows a rocky few years for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization that hosts the Globes. Now, with the announcement of the [Golden Globes 2023 nominees](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/12/awards-insider-golden-globe-nominations-full-list) (The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once lead all films with eight nods and six nods, respectively), the show is hoping to reclaim some of its former shine. The group’s practice of accepting gifts around its voting period was [also reexamined](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/09/movies/2023-golden-globes-watch.html) after it was reported that dozens of members traveled to France for an Emily in Paris set visit, where they stayed at a five-star, $1,400-per-night hotel on Paramount Network’s dime. Last year’s frill-free ceremony was [held via Twitter](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/01/golden-globes-twitter-winners-report), and the Globes seemed like a relic of the past—that is, until [talks of a revamp](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/08/so-are-the-golden-globes-coming-back-to-nbc-or-what-awards-insider?redirectURL=/hollywood/2022/08/so-are-the-golden-globes-coming-back-to-nbc-or-what-awards-insider) circulated late last summer.

[Jerrod Carmichael](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/06/awards-insider-jerrod-carmichael-rothaniel-little-gold-men) brought back the Golden Globes with a vengeance. [a guest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m3zW-OB7mk) last week, Carmichael said he “was very, very excited” to host the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards. Thankfully, instead of “Changin’ it up,” NBC ultimately went with a version of the Carmichael-approved tagline: “An evening of joy and devastation.” And Carmichael leaned into that devastation with his frank read of the HFPA in his opening monologue, calling out the HFPA for its complete lack of Black members until very recently. “I’m unfireable.” “That’s a Black man talking for you.” ‘We have no ideas, and we need it done tomorrow by five.’” He went on to describe NBC’s original plan for promoting his Golden Globes hosting stint which included a smiling photo of Carmichael from The short version, as he said: “I’m here ’cause I’m Black.” He detailed his apprehension about taking the gig to the audience, sitting on the lip of the stage and recalling how he was sitting at home making tea when he got the call from Stephen Hill to host the Golden Globes. “They’re both lazy and pushy, which is a hell of a combo. Carmichael has an extended history with NBC marketing, given that his short-lived sitcom, The Carmichael Show, ran for three seasons on the network from 2015 to 2017. Carmichael took his time with the opening monologue, beginning his speech by instructing the audience to “be a little quiet here” before launching into an extended explanation as to how he got onto the stage.

Ke Huy Quan Wins Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes 2023 (Vanity Fair)

For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer,” the 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' star said in his emotional acceptance speech.

I don’t know how to explain it, but it was a feeling that I haven’t had for decades. “I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” he said. It was the release of 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians—with his future costar Yeoh—that gave Quan renewed hope for opportunities in Hollywood, and he returned to acting when directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert cast him in Everything Everywhere All at Once. In Everything Everywhere All at Once, Quan plays Waymond Wang, the sweet husband of Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) who is saddened to be pursuing a divorce after he feels his marriage has run cold. As a child in the ’80s, Quan starred in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but later was unable to find work as an Asian actor in Hollywood, instead building up a career behind the scenes as a stunt coordinator and assistant director. Quan’s emotional acceptance speech reflected on the tough journey he’s had from a child star.

“House of the Dragon” won best TV drama and “Abbott Elementary” received the prize for best TV comedy at the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday.

Keeravani, Rahul Sipligunj (WINNER) There have been hits, such as “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” but several of the movies that won Globes, such as “The Fabelmans” and “Tár,” have struggled at the box office. “I’ll tell you why I’m here,” Carmichael said while greeting viewers. Amidst the controversy, NBC renegotiated its deal with the Globes as a one-year agreement, “which allows the HFPA and DCP to explore new opportunities for domestic and global distribution across a variety of platforms in the future,” according to a press release that announced the broadcast’s return. “All of you women understand this,” the 60-year-old Yeoh said. Booze, usually courtesy of a top-shelf sponsor, helped lubricate the evening and the Globes became must-see TV for its irreverent, anything-can-happen approach to handing out statues (multiple winners nearly missed their time at the podium because of ill-timed bathroom breaks). Jeremy Allen White, the former “Shameless” star who had a breakout hit playing a stressed-out chef in “The Bear,” captured the best actor in a TV musical or comedy, while Quinta Brunson, the creator of “Abbott Elementary,” was named best actress in a TV musical or comedy for her portrayal of an idealistic public-school teacher. “As I grew older, I started to wonder if that was it, if that was just luck. “The Fabelmans,” a warm-hearted look at Steven Spielberg’s childhood, also won a directing prize for the filmmaking icon. The Messy 2023 Golden Globes Failed to Justify Its Existence (Rolling Stone)

Historically, the Golden Globe Awards ceremony was a night of revelry — your favorite actors in eye-catching frocks and tuxedos hopped up on booze, getting roasted by the likes of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler or the more flame-throwing Ricky Gervais. Michelle Yeoh gave one of the Golden Globes' best speeches Tuesday, while irreverent host Jerrod Carmichael took aim at Tom Cruise, Will Smith and Ye.

"I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity," Quan said. ... They remembered that kid and they gave me an opportunity to try again." And then I said, 'Yeah, the flight here was about 13 hours long, so I learned.' " ... I was never invited to one party on the hill and now everyone's inviting me." Throughout the night, presenters attempted to explain why some winners were MIA: Cate Blanchett and Zendaya, for instance, were busy working, while Kevin Costner was sheltering in place due to heavy rain and flooding in Southern California. Screen legend Michelle Yeoh earned her long overdue first Globe for best comedy actress for "Everything Everywhere All at Once." Carmichael was roundly criticized on Twitter for referring to the Beverly Hilton, where the show was held, as "the hotel that killed Whitney Houston." I actually saw it with Kanye and it changed everything for him," Carmichael said to huge laughter.

Carmichael seemed to lose the audience in the room; though he often urged the crowd to pipe down, he was often talked over. As the evening wore on, Carmichael’s humor became more caustic, making a joke about Shelly Miscavige in a bit about Tom Cruise returning his Golden Globes to the HFPA, and later reminding viewers that the Beverly Hilton, where the ceremony takes place, is where Whitney Houston died. And yet, Hollywood loves a comeback story, so the Golden Globes returned this year, determined to advertise the HFPA as a changed and enlightened organization that can still put on a glitzy, booze-soaked show.

Butler, who will next be seen in Dune 2, ended his speech by thanking his family, including his sister who was at the show. He made sure to also thank the Presley family for “opening [their] hearts” to him. His last thank-you went out to Jenny the donkey, the breakout star of the dark comedy. Farrell’s fellow nominees included Babylon’s Diego Calva, Glass Onion’s Daniel Craig, White Noise’s Adam Driver, and The Menu’s Ralph Fiennes, but Farrell has been out front much of the season due to the critical acclaim of his work in Banshees. In Banshees, the actor stars as Pádraic Súilleabháin, an Irish man whose sweet existence is upended when his longtime best friend stops speaking to him. The charming star made sure to thank his director, Martin McDonagh, whom he first worked with on 2008’s In Bruges.

The Golden Globes Got Drunk on a Tuesday, and It Was Great Live TV (Vulture)

For the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony, the HFPA left self-importance to the less embattled awards shows and leaned into farce.

Flower was clearly instructed to play off some speakers — it was weird for the Hollywood Foreign Press to interrupt the makers of the best-international-film winner, Argentina, 1985 — but on several occasions, the producers of the broadcast just let people fly as long as they wanted. It was just people coming out to present awards and people receiving those awards and giving speeches. [brings us to Tuesday night](https://www.vulture.com/article/golden-globes-2023-highs-lows-whoas.html), a weird night for an awards show and the NBC return of the ceremony. It was as if this telecast, hosted by a truth-telling Jerrod Carmichael and, unofficially [for a couple of stretches](https://www.vulture.com/2023/01/jennifer-coolidge-full-golden-globes-acceptance-speech.html), Jennifer Coolidge, took an edible at the beginning of the evening and got a teensy bit higher as the minutes passed. In keeping with how the Globes has typically operated, there were no video tributes to the year in film and television or musical performances. The producers of the 2023 Globes gave attendees the tools they needed to make themselves and the show feel loose — free alcohol, allegedly scant amounts of food, and an international platform — then basically let an awards show be an awards show. But for many years, the industry acted as if it was important: The Globes marked the start of awards season, provided a hint at what might happen at the Academy Awards, and shined a spotlight on films and TV shows that mainstream audiences might have missed. And that, my friends, is the Golden Globes in a nutshell. And White openly wept at everything she said while producers shoved a camera into his face so the world could watch him sob in 4K HD. Several incidents could be cited as the ultimate encapsulation of the evening’s anything-goes vibe: Carmichael [asking if he could trade](https://www.vulture.com/2023/01/golden-globes-2023-tom-cruise-shelly-miscavige-scientology.html) the three Golden Globes Tom Cruise returned to the HFPA for disappeared Scientologist wife [Shelly Miscavige](https://www.vulture.com/2016/05/ron-miscavige-scientology-book-ruthless.html), Quentin Tarantino pronouncing the Best Picture nominees as though he were really angry with cinema and it knew why, Michelle Yeoh joking that she would beat up pianist Chloe Flower if she played over her speech … Coolidge shouted out The White Lotus’s creator, Mike White, for casting her in the series, which has, in turn, convinced her neighbors to talk to her. Talent pulled out of attending the 2022 ceremony, NBC opted not to broadcast the show, and while Golden Globes were still technically awarded, no one really paid attention.

“It was unique, it was special, it was God-blessed, it was all the years of hanging in there and believing in myself, in my talent, and praying for the industry to open its doors for me to be able to step out into the light. It’s my very first time being here, and I’m very thankful that it would be this year, a year when the HFPA would open up its heart and its minds to an understanding that diversity actually works and giving all people, no matter what color, shade, shape, gender, or size, [seeing] they all have something to add to this industry. The fact that it went ahead at all was controversial, given the criticism the Hollywood Foreign Press Association—the organization that votes on the awards—has faced over the last two years, for alleged self-dealing and a lack of diversity among its members.
