In the Beau Is Afraid trailer, Aster plays tricks on our eyes, keeping us from being able to decipher any sort of linear story. Aster isn't the type to put all his cards on the table. If you've been paying attention to the horror genre in the past five years, you probably know who Ari Aster is.

Ari Aster is the master of throwing a curveball — anyone who's seen the opening moments of Midsommar or that car ride scene in Hereditary can tell you that.
We know Beau is going to visit his mother, he gets run over, he wake up in a stranger’s house, and then things get ... Beau is Afraid has quite the task ahead of it. A24’s official synopsis is “A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer/director Ari Aster,” but that doesn’t help decode just what is happening either. If this movie is anything like Aster’s previous work, there’s sure to be some logical throughline tying all these disparate scenes together, but their surrealism is obvious.
