NFL coaches fired in 2023: Latest news on Lovie Smith, Kliff ... (Sporting News)

The Sporting News is tracking which coaches will survive the Black Monday cull and which ones's won't.

Derek Carr appears destined to leave the team in the offseason. With Houston able to scoop up a new QB in a few months, perhaps it is the right time to cut the defensive-minded Smith loose. The Browns’ season started with controversy and ended with underperformance. This seems as good a time as any for the organization to make a clean break with its fourth-year coach. 1 overall pick slot, something that drew the ire of plenty of Houstonians on social media. That has placed Smith firmly on the hot seat. Who replaces him — and when that decision will be made — remains up in the air, however. Kingsbury is the likeliest candidate to lose his job ahead of Black Monday. It seems the current collection of names is a doozy, with This is a time of great intrigue around the league as the coaching carousel spins anew. The Browns have moved on from defensive coordinator Joe Woods, signaling some changes for the Browns coaching staff. The NFL is a brutal business.

Here is a running list of the NFL head coaches who were fired after the 2022 regular season, beginning with Kliff Kingsbury and Lovie Smith.

[Lovie Smith](https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/bears/houston-texans-fire-lovie-smith-after-one-season-head-coach?chrcontext=WNBC). While the Reich move could be seen as surprising, it doesn’t compare to the shock of the Colts’ ensuing move. Hackett ended a 4-11 tenure with a 51-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Christmas Day. Shortly after Reich was fired, the team announced it had hired Jeff Saturday as interim coach. Indy was 3-5-1 to start the season, bringing Reich’s overall record to 40-33-1. Despite trading for Russell Wilson and bringing in a new voice on the sideline, the Broncos’ season fell drastically short of expectations. Smith stepped in for the vacancy, which is now open once again. 3 pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. The team fired Bill O’Brien a month into that season with Romeo Crennel filling in for the rest of the year. NFL fired coaches: Black Monday live updates (The Boston Globe)

As the 2022 regular season comes to a close, we're tracking the firings (and hirings) for teams across the league.

The Texans coach was canned after going 3-13-1 in his only season, and had reportedly spent time with team owner Cal McNair to make his case to remain in charge. 2 pick in the 2023 draft after beating the Colts on Sunday in their season finale. And Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Frank Reich is scheduled to interview for the Carolina job as well. Cleveland’s defense had issues from the start this season with communication breakdowns in the secondary over the first few weeks leading to easy touchdowns. The Browns (7-9) missed the playoffs for the second straight year. 2 seed in the NFC. But the Broncos were granted permission to interview him for their head-coaching role. Kingsbury took over in Arizona in January 2019, straight from the college ranks. McVay’s future has become an annual topic of speculation because of his acknowledgement of late-season burnout and his open interest in an easier life away from the coaching grind. In his tenure, the Titans never finished worse than 9-7 record, going 69-47. The Colts have been in disarray, jumping around at quarterback with Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, and Nick Foles throughout the season while muddling through to a 4-12-1 finish. Rhule joined the Panthers in January 2020 after spending much of his career in the college ranks (he has since returned, taking over at Nebraska).

According the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the Houston Texans have put in requests to interview multiple coaches. An interesting side note in all of this is the future of Broncos DC Ejiro Evero. With the Broncos being under new ownership led by Rob Walton, they could look to make a splash with their big hire, and want to throw money around. The Broncos fired Nathaniel Hackett 15 games into what was a tire fire of a first year only comparable to the job Urban Meyer did with the Jaguars. [January 9, 2023] In addition, CBS’ Jonathan Jones is reporting that Denver has officially put in requests to interview Cowboys DC Dan Quinn, former Saints HC Sean Payton and Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh. The roster was top heavy and lacked depth, and once the aging OL got injured, that was all she wrote. However, the biggest landmine here is the GM. Smith was probably not given a fair shake, but that team and that roster were both extremely bad. He was given a poor roster with a QB that was more than likely a lame duck. Coaches will inevitably get fired on Monday and the buzz will begin. Folks, Black Monday is upon us.

Cardinals (fired Kliff Kingsbury on Jan. 9) · Texans (fired Lovie Smith on Jan. 8) · Broncos (fired Nathaniel Hackett on Dec. 26) · Colts (fired Frank Reich on Nov ...

Including a postseason loss to the Rams, the Cardinals went 5-18 over their last 23 games. Downing was in his second season as offensive coordinator after two seasons as the tight ends coach. Kingsbury was known as an offensive whiz who had a reputation for grooming talented quarterbacks but he also had just gotten fired after posting a losing record in six college seasons at Texas Tech. He does not want to be a part of bringing it down. There were injury updates, farewell hugs, assessments of a long, trying season — GM Scott Fitterer’s words — and a look at what’s to come in 2023. Now, it seems to be up in the air. Canada has finished his second year as coordinator, and it is believed he has one year left on his contract. “I stand before you today with kind of a lack of preparedness for this. I’ve got a lot more to evaluate Mike McCarthy on than this playoff game.” ... I don’t need to go into all the pluses or minuses. “We did a piss-poor job in the red zone,” LaFleur said. Hackett, who was fired by the Denver Broncos after just 15 games as the head coach, served as LaFleur’s offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021.
