Future Washington starter or not, Sam Howell shows he belongs in ... (NBC Sports)

That's not to say Washington's rookie quarterback, who made his debut versus the Cowboys on Sunday, is destined for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

McLaurin's decision to toss the ball to the crowd instead of keeping it for Howell's sake. Whether that something is the thing feels like a supremely unlikely outcome — but it doesn't feel impossible thanks to his premiere. In fact, it's still a total mystery as to whether the signal-caller's

As Commanders eye the future, Sam Howell makes a case to be ... (The Washington Post)

In the Commanders' 26-6, season-ending victory over the Dallas Cowboys, Howell showed promise and inexperience.

It was beautiful — and reminiscent of Wentz’s strike in the same location to the same receiver in Defensive end Chase Young ran over to Howell and — as he had done with Heinicke two years ago — pointed at the name on the back of his jersey. He ran play-action from under center — a new test; his college offense ran almost exclusively shotgun — and contorted his body on the run to throw a dot to McLaurin and convert a third and six. But in a surprisingly upbeat season finale, the throw offered enough hope that, as Young’s jersey-pointing suggests, Howell one day could become a name to remember. Perhaps the game’s most lasting moment was a throw Howell made on the last play of the third quarter. It is too early to tell if Howell could fill the quarterback void that has plagued this franchise for so long, or even if the current regime will let him try. Early in the second quarter, Howell appeared to be in a rhythm. On the second play of the drive, Howell hit McLaurin across the middle. “He got behind his reads and delivered the ball a little late, but for the most part, what you really saw was how he was anticipating and was delivering [the ball] on time and putting it where it needed to be put. A few minutes later, Howell was sitting on the bench when Drew Curls, a member of the Washington Commanders’ equipment staff, sidled up and asked him to sign a football. In the coming days, Rivera, the coaching staff and the personnel department will assemble an offseason plan, and it’s likely to revolve around the quarterback position.

Howell's impressive debut ultimately begs the question: Did coaches whiff on their evaluation of Howell throughout this season?

After Howell’s performance against the Cowboys, I think he made a strong case that, at the very least, he should be competing for the starting quarterback position in 2023. And don’t want to put Sam in a situation like that this early in his career, you know, we feel he is a young man that as he grows and develops, he’s got a chance.” Rivera also spoke about Howell’s progression, “I think Sam is still learning in terms of what we do and how we do it and how we do it is, you know, that’s the part that you’ve gotta get familiar with there,” Rivera said. Or maybe Howell was a victim of circumstance and is better than the other two quarterbacks on the roster, buried behind two veterans that had no business playing over him. “We like what we’ve got in terms of the skill sets and in terms of our playmakers, you know, guys that we believe we can get the ball to. “How we go through the progressions, stuff like that, is all about learning and understanding and feeling in terms of knowing what to do in the offense itself.” Last week, Rivera stated that Howell’s footwork and decision-making hindered his ability to quickly get the ball out of his hands and in rhythm.

Chansky's Notebook: Sam's Number Called - Chapelboro.com (Chapelboro.com)

Sam Howell got his long-awaited opportunity to start for his new NFL team. And his performance bodes well for Washington having a new QB1.

It is a small sample size, but that and his college career should mean that he deserves the chance to start when training camp begins again this summer. Howell looked like his Tar Heel days when he ended a six-play drive by running 9 yards for a TD to give his team a two-touchdown lead. [Play in new window](https://media.blubrry.com/sports_notebook/chapelboroaudio.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/2023/01%20-%20January/09/Art%27s%20Notebook%20010923%20-%20FINAL.mp3) FOX was clearly rooting for Howell because the former Redskins had mostly losing records when they have started 27 different quarterbacks since being a consistent playoff team. That did not happen, but by the time their game was decided Howell had made his mark against a very good Dallas defense. And his performance bodes well for Washington having a new QB1 for the 2023 season.

Sam Howell impresses in first start as Commanders enter offseason ... (NBC Sports)

Sam Howell shined in his first NFL start on Sunday, stating his claim to be in the mix for the Commanders' QB1 job next season.

"What I wanted to do tonight was prove who I am and who I am as a player to my teammates. "You could just see the confidence in him," McLaurin said. "I'm eager to get out there and try to fix those things. And I wanted them to leave tonight confident in me and confident in who I am as a person. "I really don't feel like I have to prove myself to anybody," Howell said. I've said that before and I really do believe that that's a big part of what we need to get to." In Howell's first NFL action, he demonstrated why he deserved to be taken a lot earlier than he was. " And then every now and then you need a big play, make the big play. Joey Slye missed a short field goal on the first red-zone sequence, while Howell made an errant throw in the end zone that was intercepted on the second. "I thought he handled it very nicely, went out and did some really good things." The 22-year-old connected with fellow rookie Jahan Dotson on a pair of explosive plays down the field before calling his own number from nine yards out, breaking multiple tackles en route to extending Washington's lead to 14. That was just the start of a night Washington's quarterback will never forget.

"On that concept, I don't really get that ball," McLaurin said of the pass play. "It was fun to get out there and play some football with those guys," Howell said following the game. Kinda glad that he got an opportunity to start and get that out of the way, so next year he won't be as much of a rookie." [Commanders](https://www.si.com/nfl/commanders/news/where-will-washington-commanders-pick-in-2023-nfl-draft) fans can't wait to see him and his teammates out on the playing field again, after getting a 26-point taste of what the offense could be in the future. "It probably didn't really hit me until I ran out there on the field first," Howell said about his first start.
