For another team, getting eliminated from the playoffs during pregame warmups might have been a gut punch. For this team, they knew what the Green Bay Packers ...
They’ve also cleared the books of bad contracts, while holding five draft picks in the first three rounds of next year’s draft, two of which are in the top 18 and one of which is at No. Minnesota might be the worst 13-win team in NFL history, and managed to hold a lead against Detroit for less than 1 minute all season. Then the Lions held him to 25 points in two games and ended his season. The Lions, meanwhile, just finished second in the division despite losing six of their first seven games. Even the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won the division more recently than Detroit, and the Bucs haven’t been in the division since 2001. They’ve now won three straight games in this series overall, and just completed an in-season sweep against a Green Bay team not resting its starters for the first time since 1991. Now the Packers might be saying goodbye to their place as the longtime heavyweight in the division. Green Bay has won five division titles since that day, while the Lions have won none in 30 years. The division has run through Green Bay for the better part of three decades. It was hard to watch that game on Sunday night and not feel like something had shifted in the power balance of the NFC North. And we knew the only way to do that is to win.” Hell, they knew what the whole country has thought of them.

TIM AND MIKE: Week 18 observations · Jared Goff: He did not have his best game, but he never seemed rattled or unsure of himself, no matter what happened around ...
End of a season: There have been times when it was a relief that a Lions season ended. Minnesota won the North, and they earned it, but they were also the first 13-win team in NFL history to finish the regular season with a negative point differential. – Tim Twentyman Franchise QB: Speaking of Goff, 28, is there any real question moving forward he's the franchise quarterback of this football team? In a game where the Lions needed a steady hand at the controls of the offense, he provided it. [Jared Goff](https://www.detroitlions.com/team/players-roster/jared-goff/): He did not have his best game, but he never seemed rattled or unsure of himself, no matter what happened around him.
The Detroit Lions went into Lambeau Field and eliminated the Green Bay Packers from the playoffs, and here's our Week 18 report card.
When it came down to it, the Lions were able to pass the ball when they needed to the most. For as good as the Lions’ offensive line is, there’s still a weak link in the chain that needs to be addressed at right guard. In the fourth quarter, it became the driving force of the Lions’ offense. Through the first 20 or so minutes of play, the ground game was a non-option. It was a slow burn to get the run game going Sunday night. The win pushed Detroit’s record to 9-8, the first winning season for the franchise since 2017, and they eliminated the Packers from the playoffs.
At least they saved us all the indignity of having to pretend they were actually a playoff-quality football team for one more week – though I guess they could' ...
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. But to make matters worse, the fumble came on a very promising drive at the end of the first half, when it seemed like the Packers were at the very least about to take a two-possession lead on the Lions and maybe score the first touchdown of the game right at the break. A lot of people argued that the Packers had an advantage going into Sunday night, considering that if the Seahawks won earlier that day, the Lions would be eliminated from the postseason and have nothing to play for. Perhaps it's fitting that this year's Packers – a team that regularly (and mistakenly) played like all they had to do was show up to win – would get eliminated by their polar opposite. Going into the game, I was confident we'd see Rodgers again in a Packers jersey next year – after all, he's got more than 50 million reasons to come back, plus a bit of redemption after one of his most disappointing seasons both on the stat sheet and in the standings. Because it's not like we've spent a whole week talking about how valuable these team's training staffs are to the health of these men playing a dangerous game and how important it is to let them do their work. Stop me if you've heard this one before: Aaron Rodgers, panicked at the end of a critical game, hoists up a prayer of a pass doomed to be intercepted or incomplete. For letting a comeback win against the worst team in the league, a comeback win against a concussed quarterback and a win against a Rams team entirely on the IR fool me into thinking this team was improving. A bold decision – surely made because LaFleur and company had a great play that would continue the drive and push the Lions further to the brink, yes? When the Packers lost to the Lions earlier this season, one of their sins was getting too cute, busting out trick plays and putzing with their food rather than, you know, scoring points and winning a football game. On a third down, Darnell Savage and Rasul Douglas had a chance to take down a Lions pass catcher for a short gain and a drive-halting fourth down. I don't know what I was expecting from a team that thought it could replace one of the best receivers in the league with Sammy Watkins – but somehow it was more than this.
The game grades from Pro Football Focus largely reflect how well the Lions performed in notching the season sweep of the Packers. As a team, the Lions defense ...
Buggs earned the highest single-game grade of his career. Cominsky created five pressures on Aaron Rodgers but also earned the highest coverage grade of any defender. The higher floor is a welcome sign of progress. Wright earned a fine grade in pass protection but struggled in receiving. As a team, the Lions defense earned its top tacking grade (82.2) of the season, missing just two on the night. Detroit finished the 2022 regular season on a high note.
Taking a look at the best and worst performances from the Lions in their Week 18 win over the Packers.
Following that drive, the Lions turned to Benito Jones to fill the interior lineman role on downs with more yards to go. When it mattered most though, Kerby came up yet again with an interception in crunch time to put the offense in position to close out the game. "If that's his last pass, I'm saving that ball and I'm sending it to him so he can sign it. When the cold takes away your grip, that comes to bite you, and it almost did against the Packers when Goff fumbled the ball and recovered it. It was a bad start to the game and an omen of one of those games for Anzalone. Following a 46-yard DPI call against Jerry Jacobs that sent the Packers to the 4-yard line with first and goal, Anzalone would be responsible for two of the Lions’ three defensive stops to hold the Packers to a field goal. Jared Goff wasn’t messy Sunday night and didn’t make huge mistakes, which is always a key to the Lions’ success. Doing so against a scrambling Aaron Rodgers is even more impressive, and a huge progression for someone who Rodgers had on skates during the Week 9 meeting. That possession set up the Lions for a field goal to enter the half down 6-9. Dillon in the end zone to go after a scrambling Aaron Rodgers and force an incompletion. That kept it a live ball and cleared the way for Will Harris to come in for the recovery. It won’t show up on the stat sheet, but McNeill was responsible for a galaxy brain play that may have single-handedly kept the Lions in the game prior to halftime.
Free Press sports writer Dave Birkett grades the Detroit Lions in their 20-16 win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday night.
Joseph had one interception taken away by penalty, but he snagged his fourth of the season — and third against Rodgers — in the fourth quarter to let the Lions run out the clock, and he had another pass breakup on a deep pass to Jones. The Lions held Keisean Nixon, one of the NFL’s most dangerous return men, to a 19.8-yard average on his four kick returns, though Nixon did have returns of 30 yards on a kickoff and 16 yards on a punt, and he ran into his own blocker on a third. Josh Woods and Chris Board made two tackles each in the kicking game, with Board nearly forcing a fumble on one of his hits. His replacement, Amani Oruwariye, got beat on a 45-yard pass (and was called for pass interference on the same play) on his second defensive snap. Kenny Clark beat Evan Brown to force a Goff incompletion in the first half, and Devonte Wyatt beat Brown for the Packers’ lone sack. Isaiah Buggs had two big run stops in the red zone on Green Bay’s opening possession and Benito Jones and John Cominsky were disruptive on run downs in the first half. Jonah Jackson had the pulling on Jamaal Williams’ first touchdown run and Taylor Decker made the key block on Williams’ 11-yard run in the fourth quarter. He hit a bomb to Raymond to set up the Lions’ first touchdown on a short field and converted a fourth-and-1 pass to DJ Chark to clinch the game after Dan Campbell decided to keep the ball in his quarterback’s hands. The Lions had a couple hiccups from their interior offensive line early, but did a good job protecting Goff and giving the running game room to operate in the second half. Williams did drop a pass that his chest on a comeback, while Josh Reynolds showed off strong hands to survived a hit from Rasul Douglas on his only catch, a 16-yarder in the second quarter. Jared Goff got off to a slow start in sub-optimal passing conditions Sunday, completing just one of his first five passes and throwing low to receivers Kalif Raymond and Josh Reynolds on the opening series.
