Cowboys at Commanders: New CB Move, Connor McGovern ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Dallas Cowboys face the Washington Commanders in the last regular-season game of the year with a host of playoff scenarios still available.

Hilton (one and five targets) have all been in and out of the passing game. Spread the ball around: The only critique of the second-best offense in the league, points-wise (28.8 per game), has been the reliance on CeeDee Lamb. If the Cowboys harbor any hopes of a deep playoff run, the turnover rate needs to be reeled in. While the receiver has stepped up and then some over the last month, heading into the postseason, better teams will try to block Lamb from all of these targets. The Cowboys' offense has committed multiple turnovers in three of their last four games. Against a Washington defense resting several key starters, Prescott has the chance to keep Commanders coordinator Jack Del Rio's unit on the field for prolonged periods. Prescott even said so himself earlier in the week. Against the Tennessee Titans last Thursday, Joshua Dobbs was under pressure for most of the night (two sacks, seven quarterback hits, and a forced fumble). Currently averaging 3.2 sacks per game (third best in the NFL), defensive coordinator Dan Quinn's gang will be dialing up the pressure on Howell. In addition to shuffling to the active group today ... Maintain incredible third-down conversion rate: This is the most significant turnaround since Prescott returned. That could be a shortcut to success.

Finale Flop: Cowboys Alarmingly Listless in 26-6 Loss to ... (Sports Illustrated)

Dak Prescott off, running game stuffed in regular-season finale that bodes ominous for Wild Card Playoff game.

Finale Flop - In an essentially meaningless game, the Cowboys didn't need to look like a team that had won five Super Bowls. In their last 59 hand-offs, the Cowboys have gained only 151 yards - and that includes about 19 in garbage time Sunday and a 23-yard run by Malik Davis against Tennessee. They averaged only 2.7 yards per rush in a sluggish win over the Titans last week and another alarming 2.4 against the Commanders. Last time the Cowboys beat a quarterback who'll be playing in the postseason: the Giants' Daniel Jones on Thanksgiving. But neither did they want to look like The Three Stooges. He threw a Pick Six to cornerback Kendall Fuller (one play after almost throwing a Pick Six to Kendall Fuller). The Parsons Problem - Micah Parsons in his first 11 games: 12 sacks. He threw an interception in his seventh consecutive game, the most by a Cowboy since Vinny Testaverde in 2004. But against the Commanders' JV - which missed two field goals and an extra point and threw an end-zone interception - it was only 13-6 after Dak Prescott squeezed a touchdown to CeeDee Lamb in the final seconds of the second quarter. Since that game the Cowboys are 5-2 but have looked anything close to super. Too early to draft an obit, but did the Cowboys peak before Thanksgiving? Fickle Football - The Philadelphia Eagles' victory over the unmotivated Giants continued one of the most remarkable streaks in the history of the NFL: 18 consecutive different champions in the NFC East.

Game Recap: Cowboys Stumble in 26-6 Loss (DallasCowboys.com)

Hoping to go into the playoffs with some momentum, the Cowboys instead struggle offensively in a disappointing 26-6 loss to the Commanders.

When Slye then added another 22-yarder shortly thereafter to up the lead to 20, the day was over for Prescott and several of the other starters. The Dallas defense held the line, but this time Slye was good on his 29-yard field goal to tack on another three points. That's when the Commanders proceeded to go on a six-play, 59-yard drive to the end zone. After Washington cornerback Kendall Fuller nearly picked off a Prescott pass on second down, he stepped in front of a nearly identical throw intended for Noah Brown on third down and returned the interception 29 yards untouched for the touchdown. Howell's first career pass was a short dump-off to Terry McLaurin, the speedy receiver racing to the goal line for the 16-yard touchdown and an early 7-0 lead. Wanting to go into the playoffs with some momentum, instead the Dallas Cowboys stumbled across the finish line in a disappointing 26-6 loss to the Washington Commanders.

The Cowboys also had the NFL's seventh-ranked scoring defense through Week 17 and a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in do-it-all linebacker Micah Parsons. Parsons, who had both of the Cowboys' sacks of Tom Brady in Week One, was tied for fifth in the NFL with 13.0 sacks through 17 weeks and had forced three fumbles and recovered three more. The Cowboys scored 28.8 points per game through the first 17 weeks of 2022, which ranked second in the NFL, and they also ranked third in third down conversions (47.4%) and second in red zone touchdown efficiency (70.9%). History repeated itself in 1982, when the NFL held a "Super Bowl Tournament" following a season that was shortened to nine games by a players' strike. The Buccaneers have won their last two games against the Cowboys, also opening the 2021 season with a prime-time win in the NFL's annual Kickoff Game. The Philadelphia Eagles then clinched the NFC East, and the lone opening-week bye in the conference, with a victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Eatman: Regular Season Ends Worse Than It Began (DallasCowboys.com)

The Cowboys came full circle, finishing off the regular season the way they started it … and not in a good way.

They were as flat as the drive from Kansas to Nebraska and got bounced by the 49ers the next week. Dak threw five touchdowns and the Cowboys cruised into the playoffs with a 12-5 record. Are you one who can't get over the fact that the Cowboys have never defeated Tom Brady? And it looked like the Cowboys lost it early in the week, probably listening way too much to what Washington was doing and who they were starting at quarterback and what players were injured and all that. Heck, he had 37 "passes" in the game and only could complete 14 to his own team. And sure, it wouldn't have mattered because the Eagles took care of business and beat the Giants, who didn't play many of their starters.

No Fine Line Between Winning And Losing Badly (DallasCowboys.com)

The offensive struggles against the Commanders, started with the reshuffled offensive line.

"We just couldn't get going consistently," said McGovern, who suffered badly from the flu on Friday and Saturday, claiming to have lost nine pounds but played through the symptoms. Unreal, that's a 37.8 completion percentage for a guy completing 69 percent of his passes this year and an average gain per attempt of an anemic 3.5 yards, less than half his season average of 7.7 yards. 8, and this was the absolute worst on offense, the scariest part knowing they now are the fifth seed in the NFC playoffs and heading to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers and Tom Brady in the first round. "But I have a lot of confidence in our guys." A scroungy 182, something certainly the Cowboys have totaled in a quarter let alone all four, for sure the fewest they have gained over the past 34 games and half their per-game average. And 40-year-old backup Jason Peters to left tackle. Start with losing one of their best, if not the best run-blocking lineman, Terence Steele, against Houston five games ago. And here seemed to be the reason for this four-quarter power outage: That's 2.4 a carry. Left tackle Tyler Smith to guard. Left guard Connor McGovern to center. "Not very good at all," Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy blatantly said.

And it would be a disappointing end to their season if they're unable to go on the road and beat the Buccaneers in this upcoming Wild-Card Round matchup. Turpin is a Pro Bowler and Maher and Anger have been solid for much of the season, so this may have just been a bad day. The other two resulted in a turnover on downs and the clock running out at the end of the game. Perhaps things could have gone differently for the Cowboys on Sunday if their first possession hadn't ended with a crucial mistake on special teams. After all, Dallas lost 19-3 to Tampa Bay at home in its season opener. So there's quite a bit to correct before Dallas takes the field for the postseason. Outside of that possession, the Cowboys offense didn't have much success at all on Sunday. That wasn't the Cowboys' only special teams miscue, though. Dallas was flat for much of Sunday evening in its 26-6 loss to the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field. Dallas' only points came via a 15-yard touchdown pass from Dak Prescott to CeeDee Lamb with 6 seconds to go in the first half. 1 seed in the conference. 5 seed in the NFC.
