It wasn't much different to start the second half, when a drive stalled again and Mason Crosby missed a field goal by hitting the crossbar. Green Bay's offense was largely to blame, as it consistently stalled in scoring opportunities and saw Aaron Rodgers throw a critical interception in the closing minutes. That is because the Green Bay Packers blew their win-and-in playoff opportunity with a stunning 20-16 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Lions deny Aaron Rodgers, Packers trip to playoffs as Seahawks ... (New York Post)

Aaron Rodgers was intercepted by Kerby Joseph on the final pass of what might be his last game, and the Green Bay Packers lost 20-16 to the Detroit Lions.

Crosby had gone 3 of 3 on field-goal attempts in the first half. “The hard part of this is that it’s over for this season, because it is a special group,” Campbell said. This marks the third straight season the Packers have ended their season by losing at Lambeau Field. On the Packers’ final possession, Rodgers threw two incompletions before Joseph intercepted him for the third time this season. Facing fourth-and-1 from the Green Bay 15, the Lions passed up a field-goal attempt and got a clinching first down on Jared Goff’s 9-yard pass to DJ Chark. Then, on the Packers’ first possession of the second half, Mason Crosby’s 53-yard field-goal attempt hit the crossbar and bounced backward. “At some point the carousel comes to a stop and it’s time to get off, and I think you kind of know when that is,” Rodgers said. Linebacker Quay Walker was ejected during the Lions’ go-ahead drive after pushing Lions team physician Sean Lynch, who was attending to an injured Detroit player. Jamaal Williams’ second 1-yard touchdown run of the night against his former team put the Lions (9-8) ahead with 5:55 remaining. We knew the only way to do that is to win. Seattle (9-8) instead earned the NFC’s last playoff spot and will play Saturday at San Francisco (13-4). But they fell short against the Lions, who had been eliminated from the playoffs earlier Sunday when the Seattle Seahawks beat the Los Angeles Rams 19-16 in overtime.

Was the Packers' Loss to Lions Aaron Rodgers' Last Game? (CalBearsMaven)

Former Cal quarterbacks Rodgers and Jared Goff both fail to get into the postseason.

That's lower than his 2022 passer rating coming into the game, and he finished the season with his worst passer rating for a season in his NFL career as a starter. That allowed the Lions to run out the clock, snuffing out Rodgers' chance for a postseason berth and possibly sending him into retirement. However, he nearly led the Packers back top the postseason after a 4-8 start. Over the final nine games, he threw 15 touchdown passes with no interceptions, the main reason the Lions were in position for a run at a postseason berth. He finished 17-for-27 for 205 yards, one touchdown and one interception and a passer rating of 83.1. He led the Lions to an 8-2 record over the final 10 games and to within a tiebreaker of their first playoff berth since 2016. He wore gloves on both hands to combat the chilly temperature in Green Bay, and it seemed to affect his accuracy. Goff did not have his best game Sunday, and started slowly, going 2-for-7 for 18 yards in the first quarter. They achieved that by winning for the eighth time in their last 10 games following a 1-6 start. The Niners come into the postseason on a 10-game winning streak. He didn't dismiss the idea that he might play for another team if traded, but he did not seem eager to entertain that idea. But it was another former Cal quarterback, Jared Goff, who helped snuff out the Packers' postseason hopes as Goff led the Lions' 20-16 upset victory even though the Lions did not get into the postseason either.

Even so, Rodgers said there's "a lot of good, young talent on this team [and] if certain guys make the jumps from years one to two, this offense could look a lot different." Joseph, who picked off Rodgers twice in the November game at Detroit, became the first player to pick him off three times in a single regular season. It was Rodgers' 12th interception of the season -- second highest only to the 13 he threw in 2008, his first season as a starter. "But I think, ultimately, he's going to decide that." But I got to see what it feels like once I get away from this." When asked what the determining factor will be, Rodgers said: "It's a feeling." LaFleur said he believes the organization still feels the same way, even after one of Rodgers' least productive seasons. Is it time for another voice to be leading this team? "At some point, the carousel comes to a stop and it's time to get off, and I think you kind of know when that is," Rodgers said Sunday. So does throwing an interception on his last snap, concluding a sequence of three plays that "sting" with the chance to drive for a go-ahead touchdown and keep the season alive. "I was aware of the possibility of them going young if we had gotten to a point (this season) where we were out of it. Maybe he struggled psychologically with the reality that, for all of his greatness, he could not be the rising tide that lifted the play of those around him. And if they aren't as close they think, might it be time to move on? It marked the first time in his starting career that he finished a season without posting a single 300-yard game. But know this: Rodgers is as precise with his words as he is with the football. The two have made a habit of stacking victories under coach Matt LeFleur, tallying 47 in his four seasons, but they have failed to win the games that matter most. He says they are a "couple of players" away from being credible contenders. On Sunday they faced a Detroit franchise that had lost 27 of its last 30 games at Lambeau Field, but the Packers were unable use the home field to their advantage. Will Aaron Rodgers retire? Packers QB won't put timetable on ... (Sporting News)

The Green Bay star will now embark on his annual internal debate over what to do in the coming season.

There is, of course, another option besides retiring or returning to the Packers, and that would be a trade. There could be some changes to some of the older guys and it could be time to step away. "At some point, the carousel comes to a stop and it's time to get off. He didn't want to give the jersey to Williams because he said it was special and there are certain jerseys he just wanted to hold onto. Last March, he signed a three-year, $150 million extension that, at the time, included the most guaranteed money in a single deal for a quarterback. He said that he won't hold the time hostage, hinting that a decision will be made before the start of the free-agent market in March. He also said it would come down to whether he believes it's time for someone else to lead the team. But I could take some time and say, 'Oh, no, man, I need to get back out there and go on another run.' But I'll have to see what it feels like once I'm away from it." The Packers were eliminated from playoff contention with a 20-16 loss to the Lions at Lambeau Field on Sunday night.

[Davante Adams](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/davante-adams-FBJF4NEJQGDVUpnC/) and the inability to fill the void that remained. Sometimes it gets transferred, I think, to other things that might not ever fill that large void, but like I said, I feel good about what I’ve accomplished in this league and wouldn’t have any regrets walking away. Rodgers also didn’t entirely rule out playing for another team if the Packers want to trade him, though he once again deferred any decision about his future to after the emotional well runs dry. That’s the godfather to one of my kids. But I think he’s done a nice job of improving, working on the little things, done a nice job at practice. Gutekunst said in a news conference during the Packers’ Week 14 bye that he didn’t need to see any more game action from Love before making a decision on his fifth-year option this coming offseason, yet it remains unclear whether the GM thinks Love is fit to be the next starting quarterback in Green Bay whenever Rodgers leaves. There could be some changes with some of the older guys and it could be time to step away. Asked if he feels he still has “it,” Rodgers responded unequivocally in the affirmative. Rodgers completed 17 of 27 passes for 205 yards, a touchdown and an interception, another mediocre performance compared to the ones we’ve seen from No. He’ll take enough time making his decision that it’s not driven by the raw emotion of another season ending prematurely, but he won’t hold the organization hostage. The scenes at Lambeau Field after Rodgers and the Packers fell short in a win-and-in game would have you think this is it for one of the best quarterbacks ever, but nobody truly knows if it is.

Aaron Rodgers turned into Brett Favre just in time (Deadspin)

This time, Green Bay's QB has no one but himself to blame.

He’ll hang the Packers out, he’ll hint at retirement only to engineer a trade to some team that will get the pleasure of richly compensating him for the more rapid part of his decline while there are shots of bewildered fans in his new hometown mouthing, “Is this it?” after yet another loss in November. He did his best to make sure, Rodgers is nothing if not thorough, but his constant-companion in black and white stripes bailed him out of the first one. That’s going to go away and it’ll turn out the emperor only has stupid clothes. He’ll portray himself as above it, that money doesn’t matter, that he’d be happy on his own, but we all know he can’t breathe without the oxygen of attention and headlines. He’s made his name now on keeping his name in the conversation. You think after he held the Packers hostage every offseason to get that Easter Island statue of a contract he’s just going to walk away from $60 million next year? Rodgers certainly hasn’t had the rings to match his status as (admittedly) maybe be the best QB of all-time — certainly one of them. Favre continually thought he was the rescuer of some town under the thumb of the bad guys and he could just blast them all out. And there went the Packers. Favre would huff the fumes from all the headlines and descriptions of him as “that ol’ gunslinger,” probably actually believing he was Doc Holliday and practicing his wild west walk in the mirror the night before the game. And then in a playoff game he’d go out and throw an unconscionable interception that would bring the curtain down on the Packers’ season. All he ever did was shoot himself in the dick when it mattered most.

One year later, Rodgers and Green Bay’s supposed high-powered offense were invisible during a 13-10 loss to San Francisco in the NFC divisional playoffs. Rodgers failing to deliver in critical moments began in 2011 when he won MVP honors and led the Packers to a 15-1 regular season. At some point, Green Bay needs to turn the page. And once again, with the season on the line and Green Bay needing to drive for a potential game-winning touchdown, Rodgers came up small. Green Bay took a major step backwards in 2022 and sat at 8-8 heading into Sunday’s season finale with Detroit. Rodgers then had a dreadful passer rating of 55.9 in the 2014 NFC Championship Game, a 28-22 overtime loss at Seattle. In many ways, the conclusion to Sunday night's loss to the Detroit Lions was a fitting one for the Green Bay Packers of 2022.

Rodgers must now decide if he wants to return in 2023 or call it a career. There’s no question that some factors were out of his control during the 2022 season and directly contributed to his sharp statistical regression. The Lions dominated the final 15 minutes of play and stole a win from the Packers. He threw 26 touchdown passes, but his 12 interceptions – including three total to Joseph – ranked as his most since 2008 and second-most as a starter. After Sunday’s defeat, Rodgers was asked if he’s still “got it,” and the future Hall of Famer answered affirmatively. Rodgers would get no second chance following the turnover, just like his predecessor on a cold night at Lambeau Field back in January of 2008.

[Denver Broncos](/nfl/team/_/name/den/denver-broncos): After being a top-12 fantasy quarterback in each of his first nine NFL seasons, let's just say Wilson did not perform to that level the past two seasons, one for the 2021 Seahawks and then for Denver, a franchise that paid dearly for his services. 3 pick in the 2021 draft, right after the Jaguars' [Trevor Lawrence](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4360310/trevor-lawrence) (who is a top-10 QB now) and the Jets' [Zach Wilson](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4361259/zach-wilson) (who certainly is not), Lance broke his ankle in Week 2 this season, and much like Love, left his own team -- and fantasy managers -- with an incomplete picture of what he might statistically offer.
