Knicks problems closing out games on display in win over Spurs ... (amNY)

San Antonio Spurs' Doug McDermott (17) shoots over New York Knicks' Evan Fournier (13) and Jericho Sims during the first half of an NBA basketball game ...

New York cannot continue to allow isolation sets to permeate their fourth-quarter offense, and they can’t have one player stopping the flow of that offense. [the Knicks blow a nine-point lead with 44 seconds left](https://www.espn.com/nba/game/_/gameId/401468667) is the one that most people remember, but this team has the second-most blown leads in the league this season. Not to mention that it could also stagger the rotation and allow guys like Brunson or Barrett to play minutes with an ineffective bench unit, but that’s a story for another time. By most metrics, they are one of the league’s worst fourth-quarter offenses. New York made just 2-of-4 free throws in the final minutes of the game and shot 65% from the charity stripe overall. Far too many times a fourth-quarter possession ends in a Randle isolation set. Even after the Knicks reclaimed the advantage, they still needed a flukey five-second inbounding violation on the Spurs with five seconds left in the game to secure the win. The quickest way to blow late leads is to miss free throws. They’re the only team aside from the Raptors who have played three players that much each game. They pull the game against the Knicks to a one-possession game with 5.7 seconds left but Jeremy Sochan takes a 5 second violation on the inbounds. Despite those positive takeaways the team also continued to display a troubling inability to close out games. Big time growing pains for the Spurs.

Jalen Brunson masterclass nearly ruined by major Knicks weakness (Daily Knicks)

Jalen Brunson put the Knicks on his back on Wednesday night against SA with a career-high 38 points, but it was almost for nothing.

They have been the reason for the Knicks’ success despite missing some important players. The starters can only withstand playing so many minutes for so long before they will begin to break down. Considering that even in these blowouts, the bench has still been underperforming, the starters really deserve some props. These struggles from the bench have been a regular thing in recent matchups despite the three-game win streak. Considering how bad the Spurs have been this year, this game was closer than it should have been. Not only was Brunson cooking all game, but he hit some big-time shots down the stretch to help the Knicks pull away from the pesky Spurs.

Jalen Brunson's Career Night Leads Knicks to Win vs. Spurs (Sports Illustrated)

After scoring a career-high 38 points, Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to a win over the San Antonio Spurs.

His typical wingman in the scoring column is Devin Vassell but he was sidelined due to knee soreness. However, Jeremy Sochan was called for a five-second violation after being unable to inbound the ball quickly enough. “He’s got the skill, but he’s also got the toughness. It was clear that New York had missed his presence as the floor general and as a closer. He recorded three made field goals over the span of the final 3:02 to lead the Knicks down the stretch. He’s got the basketball IQ to go with it.

Why it's time for the Knicks to reassess their goals in a muddled ... (New York Post)

When the Knicks season began, the goal was simple: Get into the play-in tournament in the loaded Eastern Conference.

But the Knicks have started well in a lot of the losses at MSG, blowing double-digit leads in setbacks to the Mavericks, Thunder, Hawks and 76ers. He didn’t miss a single game in three years at Villanova, and he appeared in 79 games for the Mavericks last season. Recently, Jalen Brunson said the Knicks needed to have more of a sense of urgency at home. Twice earlier this season, he was a game-time decision with minor injuries — one was a quad contusion and the other a right foot contusion — and not only played, but performed well. But the Knicks are clearly in the mix to do more than what many expected of them. The Knicks were in a similar position two years ago at a middling 20-19 before taking off and finishing fourth in the East. No other team in the league with a winning record is .500 or worse at home. Coming off a 53-win season and spot in the Eastern Conference finals, the Heat have begun to get going. Only four losses separate the sixth-place Knicks and the 12th-place Raptors. That includes three games against the Raptors and one apiece against the Hawks, Heat and Pacers. The conference isn’t as good as it was expected to be, at least after the top five of the Celtics, Bucks, Nets, Cavaliers and 76ers. In the loaded Eastern Conference, that would be a step in the right direction.

The Knicks handled the young Spurs and managed to earn their third win in a row after defeating San Antonio 117-114 at MSG. The victory saw New York (21-18) ...

He’s just a hell of a competitor.” “A three is gonna tie the game up, so I had to make sure to get out there, get a hard closeout and force a shot clock violation to end the game, late-clock situation.” Mitchell Robinson got into foul trouble and could only get four points and five rebounds on a low 13 minutes of playing time. “I was garbage [Wednesday night] so I had to do something,” said Randle after the game. Grimes scored 14 points and stole a couple of rocks. From that point on, though, the Knicks just put the clamps on San Antonio and gave them no chance. That’s because it took the All-Star candidate 26 field-goal attempts to reach that tally hitting just 9-of-26 and one 3-point shot of the eight he launched. Brunson was referencing the late effort by a resilient Spurs team that found itself down just two points with four seconds to go and Evan Fournier visiting the free-throw line. We had to grind it out, just find a way to win,” said Brunson. Speaking of Fournier, the Frenchman logged his shortest playing time since November 5 by staying on the court for 11 minutes on Wednesday while contributing six points (three free throws and a triple). He’s got the toughness. He’s got the skill.

Is it possible to leave Donovan Mitchell-Knicks trade what-ifs in 2022? (Daily Knicks)

It's been four months since the New York Knicks lost out on Donovan Mitchell to the Cavaliers, but that doesn't mean it has stopped being brought up.

Donovan Mitchell isn’t set to be a free agent until the 2026 offseason and there’s a lot that can change between now and then. [RJ Barrett](https://dailyknicks.com/2022/08/30/rj-barrett-extension-knicks-donovan-mitchell-trade/) would be receiving an extension, the belief was still that Mitchell would wind up in New York. The bottom line is that New York didn’t trade for Donovan Mitchell. Surely the front office had to be feeling some sort of regret, right? Although the Knicks had announced a couple of days earlier that New York Knicks fans went from analyzing Donovan Mitchell’s possible fit in NYC to being haunted by his name that will forever be associated with their favorite team.

Spurs Player Takes Responsibility For Loss To Knicks (The Cold Wire)

I take full responsibility for the play. If anything, I take the blame. So, coming up straight, I take responsibility for that. I take accountability, and I’ll be better.” “I feel like — you know — I didn’t go as fast as I should on the play. If we’re going to point the finger — I’ll take the blame,” Johnson said.

Landry Fields was a Knicks cult hero. What happened after he left ... (New York Post)

Landry Fields was a rookie sensation with the New York Knicks, but after he signed with the Toronto Raptors, an elbow injury forced him to retire at the age ...

“The speed of it was something that was surprising,” Fields said. “I don’t put as much stock into it as I did as a player,” Fields said. That was one of the things that really stood out, his ability to be a connector among the staff and the players. “It was something we put a lot of thought into to find the right person, and he fit that mold really well. You have to take advantage of the opportunities when you receive them, but I don’t control when those come or who thinks what of me or how I even got here and fell into it.” “It took over a year to find the right guy, and Landry was that guy,” Schlenk said. By then, Fields was in the first season of a three-year, $20 million contract with the Raptors. … But it does give it a sort of drama, for the story to have a deeper meaning when there’s a gap. Fields finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting. This morning, I went to the office where the practice facility is at for a few hours, and I changed into my basketball clothes and just shot on the court. At 33, he was elevated to the position of Atlanta’s general manager. It was a consistent reminder of what was not.

The New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs were tied at 107 with five minutes left when Jalen Brunson missed a lay-up. The next time he had the ball Brunson ...

A lot of Knick guards of the past, even the recent past, would spend the rest of the game deferring to Randle, relegating themselves to a kick-out option or just generally playing in fear, playing not to lose and especially to not be the reason for losing. Brunson followed the turnover by finding Quentin Grimes for three, then followed that by scoring the Knicks’ next (and last) three baskets in crunch time; Brunson scored or assisted on nine of New York’s last 10 points. Randle’s hustle took a bright scythe to the field of rotting meh we’re used to seeing in those moments and cut it down. Late in the opening quarter, Julius Randle turned the ball over and Josh Richardson took it the length of the floor, nothing in front of him but daylight and two points. That uncertainty is a helluva better vibe than viewing those games as a couple of Ls. The next time he had the ball Brunson turned it over, leading to two Spurs free throws.

If you are having a bad day, just go to YouTube and watch Stephen A. Smith throw a tantrum on the New York Knicks; it'll put you in a good mood.

It’s easy to talk when you have the upper hand, but sometimes, a gentle, or rather, a harsh reminder of reality, is necessary. This is the kind of stuff I’m talking about when I’m talking about the damn Knicks. First and foremost, just because Phil Jackson drafted someone else other than Donovan Mitchell and didn’t listen to Stephen A, all of a sudden, he should be banned from New York? And Donovan Mitchell, who wanted to be in New York, who’s from New York, who expected to be when the New York Knicks uniform dropped in 71 points. Following Mitchell’s breakout game, the topic came on First Take, and moderator Molly Qerim tried to poke fun at Smith for Mitchell’s big night by trolling him about the Knicks. If you are having a bad day, just go to YouTube and watch Stephen A.
