[Nathan Eovaldi](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/31174/nathan-eovaldi) left for the [Texas Rangers](/mlb/team/_/name/tex/texas-rangers), and the Red Sox fell short of signing multiple free agent targets. And [Carlos Correa](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32653/carlos-correa) agreed to a pair of $300 million-plus deals, though medical foibles have his status in limbo. Devers will be the roster's cornerstone and the face of the franchise for the new era of the Red Sox. [Jeter Downs](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/39648/jeter-downs), the main prospect return in the Betts deal, just days after. Though the third baseman has improved defensively over this career, he could potentially move to first base or designated hitter down the road. It was similar to his 2021 season, in which Devers hit 38 home runs, and 2019, when he led the major leagues with 359 total bases as a 22-year-old. But on Monday, with Fenway Park hosting the majestic Winter Classic, fans booed John Henry, a show of the sentiment toward the owner under whom the Red Sox broke their 86-year World Series drought before winning three more championships. In 2022, he hit .295/.358/.521 with 27 home runs, 88 RBIs and a career-best OPS+ of 141. Offering Devers to a deal far longer than Manny Ramirez's eight-year pact and more than 50% larger than David Price's $217 million contract was enough for the two-time All-Star to accept shepherding the Red Sox out of last place in the American League East and back to contention. The contract will start in 2023 and extend through the 2033 season, sources said. His left-handed swing was perfectly suited for Fenway Park, with doubles thwacking off the Green Monster and home runs carrying out to right field. Devers debuted with Boston at 20 years old in 2017 and quickly illustrated why scouts so adored his bat.

Red Sox, Rafael Devers In Agreement On 10-Year Extension (MLB Trade Rumors)

By MLBTR's standards, then, he agreed to a ten-year, $313.5MM extension today. There are no opt-outs in the deal and he won't have a no-trade clause. The deal ...

[Jon Heyman of The New York Post](https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/1610762575775469583) first added the absence of a no-trade clause and [Alex Speier of the Boston Globe](https://twitter.com/alexspeier/status/1610772974415527937) first had the lack of opt-outs. [Jeff Passan of ESPN](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/35380017/rafael-devers-boston-red-sox-finalizing-11-year-331m-extension) clarified that the deal included 2023 and would only add ten years beyond that. Though the Sox maintained that retaining Bogaerts was a top priority, he instead [signed](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/padres-xander-bogaerts-agree-to-11-year-deal.html) with the Padres for $280MM over 11 years while Boston came up well short, reportedly in the $160MM range. Since they paid the tax in 2022, they would be considered a second-time payor in 2023. In the long run, it’s possible that Devers may have to move from third base to first base, since his defense isn’t as highly regarded as his bat. With that new figure in place, the club’s total CBT tally is now $224MM, according to the calculations at Though the Sox got some interesting players in return, it was widely-viewed as a financially-motivated decision, a bitter pill for fans to swallow after a strong run of success that saw them win four titles from 2004 to 2018. That puts them within striking distance of the lowest luxury tax threshold, which will be $233MM this year. [franchise history](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/largest-contract-in-franchise-history-for-each-mlb-team-2.html), which was previously held by the $217MM deal for [David Price](https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=priceda01,price-006dav&search=David+Price&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-01-04_br). Devers endured a bit of a sophomore slump in 2018 but has put that behind him in a big way. Baseball America ranked him in the top 20 on their top 100 list in both 2016 and 2017. There are no opt-outs in the deal and he won’t have a no-trade clause.

Rafael Devers is Mr. Red Sox now, and a worthy candidate to be the ... (The Athletic)

The Red Sox were running low on supremely talented players. Bank on Devers lifting the Boston Baseball Experience on skills and heart alone.

And it doesn’t have to be flat-out adulation; God knows, there were days and nights when the great Ted Williams and the not-as-great-but-nonetheless- Yes, he hit only .214 (3-for-14) in the 2018 World Series. I doubt October frightens the kid. When the Red Sox won championships in 2007, 2013 and 2018, everyone went nuts; when they finished last in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2020 and 2022, everyone went, well, nuts. It’s perfectly acceptable for Sox fans to wonder why ownership couldn’t direct chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom to pull the levers in such a way to keep Betts, Bogaerts and Devers. The mob is just as restless and ornery as it’s ever been, and this past season fans voted with their feet: Attendance was 2,625,089, the lowest it’s been since 2000, not counting the 60-game, assembled-on-the-fly 2020 pandemic season. While it’s true the Patriots have emerged as the No. And Devers, a sweet-swinging lefty hitter with some power (he slashed .295/.358/.521 in 2022, with 27 home runs and a 141 OPS-+) is going to help the Red Sox win. So, yes, there’s the winning. He’s a straw-that-stirs-the-drink kind of player is what he is, the type of player whose very appearance on the field inspires Hall of Fame chatter in the stands, even if he’s still an apple-cheeked 26-year-old. The good news? That’s the bad news.

Former ace Chris Sale missed much of the past three seasons with injuries large and small, but the Red Sox expect him back at full strength. The Rafael Devers-Red Sox Deal Is Done. Now Let's Just Watch ... (Over The Monster)

For today, at least, don't talk about the contract terms. Talk about Rafael Devers.

Chapman was in complete control, primed to close out the game and put the heat on the division-leading Sox down the stretch. It was a genuine moment of human athletic wonder that reminds us why we watch baseball in the first place, which is why I actually prefer this video to the broadcast: He stepped out of the box, stared out at the mound for a moment, shook his head, and then stepped back in — just in time to watch another 103-MPH fastball barely miss outside. There has been debate about whether it’s an overpay, whether it was a PR move, whether it signals a shift in Red Sox front office strategy, and whether it only arose because of bullying from Bruins fans. We’re not discussing, in other words, the things that make us react like the fans in that video. With a 2-1 lead heading into the ninth and Hanley Ramirez, Rafael Devers, and Xander Bogaerts due up, the Yankees would, of course, turn to Aroldis Chapman. To be fair to 20-year-old Rafael Devers, David Robertson was one of the single best relievers in baseball that year. And furthermore, despite his outstanding start, Devers really wasn’t even supposed to be in the big leagues at that point — he’d begun the year in Portland and had played all of 9 games at AAA before getting the call. An extremely rare misplay by Mookie Betts on a ball at the right field wall tied the game back up in the bottom half of the inning. single gave the Sox a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. But third base was a disaster zone for the Red Sox in early 2017. I know what it’s like to be a fan of a forgotten team.

With $331 Million Deal, Red Sox Will Build Around Rafael Devers (The New York Times)

We want to build around him,” Chaim Bloom, Boston's chief baseball officer, said of Rafael Devers, the star third baseman who is working to finalize a $331 ...

The Red Sox have passed on a lot of those options. His three seasons have reflected the range of outcomes for that kind of strategy: last place in 2020, a surprise visit to the American League Championship Series in 2021, and last place again in 2022. “You had a club that obviously was coming off a lot of recent success, but clearly was not in a position where it was at or anywhere near the top of the division anymore. The hiring of Bloom, who had been a top official with the thrifty and successful Tampa Bay Rays, a division rival, seemed to signal a shift in philosophy. But the way you do that is by maintaining elements of that core while replenishing the organization as much as you can with young talent. The team hopes that three young pitchers — Whitlock, Tanner Houck and Brayan Bello — can establish themselves in the rotation, but the veteran starters — Kluber, Chris Sale, James Paxton, Nick Pivetta — offer little certainty. It is impossible to know precisely how long-term deals with Betts and Bogaerts — or other free agents the Red Sox did not explore — could have altered the team’s long-term outlook. Are you well positioned to have the foundation around that core piece that will allow you to maximize the prime years of the player? After two more last-place seasons, they won three division titles in a row, culminating in the 2018 World Series title. Rafael Devers, Boston’s star third baseman, was said to be in the process of finalizing an 11-year, $331 million contract extension with the Red Sox on Wednesday. Both teams wore baseball uniforms to the ballpark, and when Henry arrived, a fan on Van Ness Street, along the stadium’s first base line, spotted him in the parking lot and cried, “Pay Raffy!” Henry — whose ever-expanding sports portfolio had seemed to dampen his enthusiasm for spending on the Red Sox — may have listened. After a last-place finish in 2012, they signed some midlevel free agents and won the 2013 World Series.

Devers a gift to Sox fans that will keep on giving (MLB.com)

There are so many ways to look at this big deal -- $331 million for 11 years -- that Rafael Devers is about to sign with the Red Sox, per a source, ...

Back in 2018, when the Red Sox had the best season in the history of the franchise, Betts was young and in right field and Bogaerts was young at shortstop and Devers was the hot new kid at the hot corner. Now John Henry and Chaim Bloom, who runs baseball operations for the Red Sox, have responded, in a very big way. The Red Sox are making the exact same business decision, for just about the same amount of money, with the face of their own franchise. Red Sox fans were afraid the same thing might happen with Devers. This was a business decision, of course, for the Yankees, about the face of their franchise. This isn’t to say that Devers has ever had a year like Judge just had, because only a handful of players in baseball history ever have.

Xander Bogaerts reacts to Rafael Devers' new contract with Red Sox (masslive.com)

Xander Bogaerts reacted to Rafael Devers getting the type of deal the Red Sox never offered him.

He added “Earned and Deserved” with three emojis, a heart, the 100 and a baseball. There's plenty in the Red Sox house to fix, but with Rafael Devers ... (Boston.com)

Three thoughts on the massive, franchise-altering Rafael Devers deal for the Boston Red Sox. Read the story on Boston.com.

And after the last two years and 11 months, we can all take a minute to celebrate some reinforcement of the foundation. [since just after the Betts trade](https://www.mlb.com/news/john-henry-statement-on-trading-mookie-betts), is aware of the outside noise. But it’s one that requires an awful lot of good will and benefit of the doubt. “This is the best deal of the winter. The hats on the plaques in Cooperstown. Even taking the baseball piece out of it, there was no way forward for a Red Sox approach built on the grass always being greener elsewhere. But it doesn’t change the lay of the land. [As noted Wednesday](https://www.boston.com/?post_type=post&p=26645255), Devers’s agreement for his final arbitration season brought up memories of the Sox giving Betts $27 million for 2020 a month before trading him to Los Angeles. Late 2012, of course, after the fire-sale deal with the Dodgers had us staring down a “years-long rebuild.” 4, 2023, their likes had only grown, and the snowball of that day had rolled down a lot of mountain. An organizational failure spanning three baseball bosses, and a punt to the groin that fundamentally changed how a sizable percentage of people viewed the Red Sox. Rafael Devers: Why Red Sox saved offseason by bringing him back (ClutchPoints)

They lost longtime shortstop Xander Bogaerts in free agency, while making several confusing free agency signings as well. But everything changed when they ...

And while Bogaerts is gone, Devers is sticking around, which was always viewed as the top priority in Boston. The future of the franchise is Devers, and he gives Boston a player to build around over the next few years. The lineup looks perilously thin, and while the bullpen is in much better shape than it was to close out the 2022 season, the same can’t necessarily be said about the starting rotation. It wasn’t a stretch to declare the Boston Red Sox as the biggest loser from the 2022 offseason prior to Wednesday afternoon. Let’s explore why that’s the case, and the reason why Devers’ extension is such a big deal for Boston. Devers is clearly one of the best all around hitters in the game of baseball.

The Red Sox are counting on Devers to be a reliable constant. He is the connective tissue that will unite the present and the future. Nobody is David Ortiz, but the Red Sox are asking Devers to take the baton. His expressive, baby face and massive forearms will be all over the team’s promotional materials for years to come. When younger players are looking for someone to emulate, Devers is the guy now. When the media wants a spokesman for the players, they’ll gather in front of his locker now.

Devers over Betts or Bogaerts? Making sense of Red Sox deal (ESPN)

Boston fans have seen two homegrown stars leave for the West Coast in recent years -- but that won't happen a third time. Here's what the Devers deal means.

The bullpen should be improved with the additions of [Kenley Jansen](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/29630/kenley-jansen) and [Chris Martin](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32903/chris-martin). [Justin Turner](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/29607/justin-turner) can replace the production of [J.D. Martinez](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/31065/jd-martinez), who signed with the Dodgers. [Triston Casas](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/41180/triston-casas) will likely be the team's starter on Opening Day. Betts eventually signed a 12-year, $365 million deal with the Dodgers -- a deal he told ESPN in August he would have signed in Boston -- while the Red Sox received [Alex Verdugo](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/33786/alex-verdugo), [Connor Wong](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/40086/connor-wong) and [Jeter Downs](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/39648/jeter-downs), the latter of whom the team designated for assignment this offseason and was claimed by the [Washington Nationals](/mlb/team/_/name/wsh/washington-nationals). Boston will also need more production from [Trevor Story](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32150/trevor-story), Boston's prize free agent acquisition heading into the 2022 season. Outfielder [Ceddanne Rafaela](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/4987382/ceddanne-rafaela) had a breakout season in 2022 both offensively and defensively, hitting .299/.342/.538 with 21 homers, 28 stolen bases, 32 doubles and 10 triples in 116 games across Single-A and Double-A. [David Price](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/28958/david-price) and his contract included in the deal with the [Los Angeles Dodgers](/mlb/team/_/name/lad/los-angeles-dodgers). The team gets the benefit of locking up a promising young player on a deal that could be below market value, while a player guarantees his family generational money before he turns into a superstar. The Devers deal is fan-friendly and still aligns with Bloom's vision for the team's future. And locking up Devers not only makes him Boston's centerpiece player for the foreseeable future, it also removes a lot of uncertainty surrounding the franchise. Following some high-profile departures in recent years, Devers will be the clear face of the franchise -- and its offensive catalyst -- for years to come.

Extending Rafael Devers Gives the Aimless Red Sox a Direction (Sports Illustrated)

After a few years of frustrating cost-cutting and hesitant spending, Boston finally has a path toward contention.

The extension doesn’t change anything about the upcoming season: The Red Sox were not set up to be great before the deal, and because Devers was always going to be part of this roster for 2023, they’re not set up to be any better after it. But this is about the long term, not the short term, and this indicates their willingness to be competitive for the former. But Devers is the only young player with a proven track record in the major leagues and the obvious potential to be the face of the franchise. But regardless of what the future holds, this was the clearest, most positive statement they could have made about their intentions: After a few years of frustrating cost-cutting and hesitant spending, the Devers extension shows the Red Sox are once again committed to winning. That disappointment came after the Red Sox had [traded Mookie Betts](https://www.si.com/mlb/2020/02/05/red-sox-trade-mookie-betts-dodgers) to the [Dodgers](https://www.si.com/mlb/team/los-angeles-dodgers) in February 2020 for a package that has not exactly covered itself in glory in the years since. Given the franchise’s current position, it was worth paying what it took to keep Devers, and while any long-term deal like this is something of a gamble, his steadiness and good health so far suggest only good things. Their departures made it all the more important for Boston to keep Devers. The Devers extension seems almost essential: a move by the Red Sox to show they do have a sense of competitive direction right now and they’ll still pay what it takes to retain one of their young stars, despite recent evidence to the contrary. The Red Sox had plenty of reasons to be interested in keeping Devers. [Padres](https://www.si.com/mlb/team/san-diego-padres) outbid Boston for [franchise shortstop and de facto captain Xander Bogaerts](https://www.si.com/mlb/2022/12/08/xander-bogaerts-padres) this winter. [won a World Series with Boston in ’18](https://www.si.com/mlb/2018/10/30/boston-red-sox-season-ages-ends-world-series-title-game-5), and he enjoyed a breakout season in ’19. He’s established himself as one of the sharpest young talents in the game.

Projecting how Rafael Devers might fare in the second half of his ... (The Athletic)

Most extremely long deals are ugly at the back end. Does Devers' contract have a chance to be an exception?

While that feels like a while ago compared to the slew of recent deals, they’re both only in the first half (or even third) of their lengthy contracts. Perhaps he can stick at third base until he turns 30, but a large part of that will depend on his conditioning and physical health. Votto, meanwhile, has been the most productive of the three and has two years remaining on the 10-year, $225 million deal he signed in 2014 at age 30. He averaged a 162 OPS+ while leading in the league in homers and OPS twice and average four times. Over the first five seasons of his career, he’s averaged .283 with .879 OPS and 124 OPS+. Devers probably isn’t as athletic as Stanton was when he signed his deal at age 25 in 2015. In the first five years of his deal, Votto finished top 10 in NL MVP voting three times, including second- and third-place finishes in 2015 and 2017. Cabrera is entering the final season of the eight-year, $248 million deal he signed in 2016 at age 33. [Tigers](https://theathletic.com/mlb/team/tigers/), he averaged a 119 OPS+ while hitting .286 with an .822 OPS. There’s an understanding that as the player ages, he won’t be as productive in the second half of the deal, but that’s the price the team pays to secure those earlier years. [Yankees](https://theathletic.com/mlb/team/yankees/). It marked his final year in Miami before being traded to the
