Nancy Pelosi's Career Is a Case for Gerontocracy (The Atlantic)

The ruling troika of Nancy Pelosi (age 82), Chuck Schumer (72), and Joe Biden (80) has participated in politics for about a combined 140 years. The last time ...

But the fetishization of youthful vigor—the yearning for the charismatic fresh face—is an ingrained cultural impulse that tends to disregard many of the qualities that make for an effective politician. The good news for the Democrats is that this is probably the ideal moment for generational turnover and opens the thrilling possibility of the nation’s first Black speaker. They reached professional maturity during the years when their political party began to struggle in the face of Republican attacks on the ethos of big-government liberalism, and they prided themselves on their pragmatism, their ability to count noses and preserve disparate coalitions. All of this suggests that at the end of their career, these leaders weren’t thinking about clinging to power so much as attempting to write the first lines of their obituary. Because of their midterm defeat in the House, they don’t have much power to wield in Congress. She gleefully taunted Donald Trump—a rather old politician lacking the benefits of age—in the Oval Office, in the presence of reporters, after having won a majority in 2018. One criticism of gerontocracy is that senior citizens are incapable of thinking toward the future, because they won’t be around for it. They spent heavily to decarbonize the economy and to maintain national competitiveness for generations. Younger people can, of course, competently perform these gigs, but their complexity is suited to those with the deepest reservoirs of experience. Pelosi is handing the gavel to an as-yet-unnamed Republican speaker and stepping aside as House Democratic leader in favor of the 52-year-old Hakeem Jeffries. With the narrowest of margins, they have accomplished far more than anyone could have reasonably expected—and far more than their recent Democratic predecessors. Even simply gathering the votes to become a leader can be a challenge, as Kevin McCarthy is now graphically demonstrating in his

The Pelosi Era Comes to a Close (The New York Times)

WASHINGTON — With a popular Democratic president in the White House and big Democratic majorities in Congress, an emboldened Speaker Nancy Pelosi in 2009 ...

Pelosi said in a recent interview, explaining her spontaneous decision to shred the speech. Pelosi then led the Bush administration and members of both parties in Congress in regrouping and finding a bipartisan way out of the economic meltdown. “Nothing in any of the years that I was there compares to the Affordable Care Act, expanding health care to tens of millions more Americans, 150 million families having better benefits, lower costs and no pre-existing condition risking their access, and no lifetime limits,” Ms. Her role was captured during a now-famous moment in the West Wing of the White House, when the Treasury secretary, Henry Paulson, got down on bended knee pleading for Ms. While her goals were big, she also devoted herself to — and appeared to relish — the minutiae of vote counting, picking off Democrats one by one until she reached the magic number of 218, usually with a few more tucked away in her purse just in case. In the process, she sealed a legacy as the most powerful woman in American politics to date. Pelosi coupled her appeal for passage of the legislation with an assault on Republican economic policies that caused the crisis. What can arguably be called the Pelosi era in Washington came to a close on Tuesday, with Ms. The new leadership of both parties will find it daunting to try to match her performance and political reach, whatever their view of her policy agenda.

The following Congress, he served as a regular member, but Cannon [lost his election in 1912](https://history.house.gov/People/Listing/C/CANNON,-Joseph-Gurney-(C000121)/). In March of 1910, the House of Representatives debated how to limit Cannon’s power during a Hastert was reelected in 2006, but Republicans lost the majority — he chose not to run for a leadership position in the new minority. Typically, the career trajectory for a speaker is that they don’t run for reelection, like Paul Ryan, who served as speaker during the 114th and 115th congresses. “This I will continue to do as a member of the House.” And historically, there’s not a road map for a speaker to remain in Congress after giving up their leadership role.

Nancy Pelosi: Love or hate her, her senior work ethic is admirable (Morningstar.com)

By Paul Brandus. American culture devalues age and the wisdom and experience it conveys. Most journalists who write about outgoing House Speaker Nancy ...

And the rest of us should be grateful that they remain eager to contribute. A report by Gallup found that millennials are the "least engaged generation in the workplace," and three times more likely to switch jobs than non-millennials. But the broader question as it relates to age is this: How old is too old to work? There's something to these generalities, but the problem, as I've mentioned, is that there are 10 million job openings in this country. These are attributes that--while hard to quantify as one can a salary--can add value to any enterprise. Too bad this isn't often the case, and the fact that it's not is because many employers are penny-wise but pound-foolish. How old is too old to serve? Those younger workers are likely to bolt. I'm probably painting with a broad brush here, but what I think this stuff really means is that companies are just looking for plug-and-play employees; they don't want to invest in workers or train them. American culture tends to place youth and beauty on a pedestal, while devaluing age and the wisdom and experience it conveys. This column is about a senior citizen who gets up each day and tackles one of the toughest jobs around. The argument that some politicians are too old to serve is a legitimate one.

And I think I'm really going to start to listen to them." I'm not trying to undermine the entire career of Nancy Pelosi by saying I don't know what those things are, I'm saying, as the youngest of five and as the one who had to sit in the ER with my father, I don't really believe in public service. I would say to anyone on any side of the aisle, don't ever go to the person's home because I think you lose them when you show up on their doorstep. They go in front of a judge and they say, "I don't know how this happened to me. I got to hear it in the background while they were on. And you're going to go on the internet and they're going to say, "This is propaganda." That's what I think is interesting coming out of these trials and out of the committee. The Jan, 6 insurrectionists who are in jail call me, and they say, "Oh, I got swept up in the moment." You say in the film that when you asked your mom about what it's like to be the target of the right for years, she literally laughed it off. But you have to understand that I actually have to do this for a living. "They call me and then we have these conversations and they say, 'Oh, I got swept up in the moment,'" Alexandra said. But I'm just trying to make the point that if you think about corporate America, television, industrial, political — think of all the people that work for Nancy Pelosi, and they all have voodoo dolls with my face on it that they're poking every night right now.
