I think they were already on a journey of improvement last season but Arsenal have continued to grow from that moment. Still, Arsenal have changed since then, particularly in defense, where the addition of Oleksandr Zinchenko has brought a control and security against the counter that his new team could have done with in May. Whether they are worthy of such lofty company may become clear at the Emirates. Here is how you can watch the match and what you need to know: However, they are likely to face a stern test against another surprising side near the summit. Eddie Howe's side have the best defensive record in the Premier League but Arsenal are only just behind them.

Arsenal lose their cool as Newcastle test title credentials (ESPN)

When his Arsenal needed cool and calm, Mikel Arteta fed into the chaos, as the league leaders were frustrated to be held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle.

This time last year, Newcastle were second-bottom of the Premier League and facing the real prospect of being the richest club in the Championship until Howe dramatically transformed their fortunes and steered the team away from relegation danger. Arteta has brought some much-needed passion back to Arsenal, on and off the pitch, but he now needs to tone it down and learn to balance it out with calmness. Arteta has done a remarkable job in his three years as Arsenal manager and could deliver their first Premier League title since 2004 this season, but he needs to calm down on the touchline to help make that happen. They are still in the driver's seat, but it will be a long five months between now and the end of the season. They had plenty of flair on the pitch, but Arsenal didn't know how to use it, and their inexperience shone through in this game. 22, Arsenal are going to have to find a Plan B to win games if they are to clinch the title. Mikel Arteta was left incensed after he felt Arsenal were denied 'two scandalous penalties' in Tuesday's goalless draw with Newcastle United.

When addressing the Burn challenge, he added: “That one he's got a right to be annoyed with. We should have done some things better in the final third and we should have had two penalties to win the game." It is not the way they play. "Newcastle wanted to set-up like this. "There were two penalties. We had so many situations.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle: Hosts frustrated by visitors' dogged defence ... (The Athletic)

The Premier League's standout game of 2023, so far at least, provided plenty of drama and tension at the Emirates Stadium, even if goals were in short ...

With the ball, Joelinton forced a couple of turnovers which led to openings, regularly interchanging positions with Willock, the left-sided No 8. Goalless away to Wolves in at the break? Arsenal have been more settled than ever and it is borne out in the numbers. But Newcastle’s winding up of the opposition is not merely restricted to those who are on the field, either. Andrew Madley, the referee, appeared to lose control, producing a raft of yellow cards. And while there was a yellow card for a slightly cynical shirt-pull, the 23-year-old Lewishman-born forward completed 10 of his 12 passes and won three fouls in a neat first-half performance. He came close to making both of those figures 12 — a late effort on the angle was well saved by Pope. He perhaps should have been booked before he actually was — harshly given a yellow when he appeared to win the ball ahead of Saka — but that did not dilute his effectiveness. After being overwhelmed during the first 10 minutes with Arsenal’s pace in transition, Newcastle used every means necessary to slow the home side down. Tonight’s draw may be more of a case of not failing a test rather than passing with flying colours, but it allows Arsenal to maintain momentum during a sequence of fixtures against four of the five most recent English sides to beat them: Brighton, Newcastle, Tottenham and Manchester United. On the other days, they will make their opponents strain for everything. They know how to suck up discomfort and spread it.

Howe would insist it was not the case but it was hard to shake the sense that Newcastle had set out to disrupt the momentum of this contest as much as possible. The ball was in play for 53 of the 90 minutes, the 18th shortest this season and eight minutes shorter than the average, according to Cannon Stats. "If it was the other way round I'd be shouting for it," he acknowledged, "probably not with the belief that it should be given. It was one of two "scandalous" decisions that the Arsenal manager insisted should have resulted in penalties for his side, the other a possible tug by Dan Burn on Gabriel. The only other attackers on the bench were Marquinhos, yet to play a meaningful minute of Premier League football, and Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, who had never been named in a senior squad before. It is not just Jesus, indeed one might contend that an impressive display of link play from Eddie Nketiah meant he was not the player who was most missed.

Arsenal's expert counter-pressing nullified Newcastle and is key to ... (The Athletic)

Mikel Arteta's side's counter-pressing is vastly improved from last season and is a key reason why they are eight points clear at the top.

Their moments of vulnerability only came via set pieces, an area in which [Newcastle have been thriving this season](https://theathletic.com/3750690/2022/11/04/newcastle-tactics-short-corners-howe/), and an odd error from [Aaron Ramsdale](https://theathletic.com/football/player/aaron-ramsdale-oClCp7qVt2452IFa/) early in the second half. The Brazilian is in plenty of space because Lamptey vacated his position when trying to initiate the Brighton counter. From this counter-pressing situation, Arsenal scored their first goal of the game. Away to Brighton, we can see Partey and Zincheko’s positioning as Odegaard is running at the In addition to this, it provides them with another attacking weapon that Jurgen Klopp once described as the best creator of chances. But because of Zinchenko’s inside positioning when Arsenal have the ball… In the example below, [Premier League](https://theathletic.com/football/premier-league/) this season, Arsenal’s display off the ball nullified Newcastle’s threat on the counter and kept Arsenal in control of the game. A view from this angle gives the impression that Arsenal might have had a poor game, but football isn’t black and white. [Granit Xhaka](https://theathletic.com/football/player/granit-xhaka-701HGKSsMRGk4Bry/) loses the ball in the centre of the pitch and [Jacob Murphy](https://theathletic.com/football/player/jacob-murphy-Mf4QyavjJk3CT3cy/) drops to collect it… After an exciting 10 minutes in which Arsenal looked threatening, Newcastle’s solid defensive organisation limited the host’s chances in open play. Wittgenstein used the image as an example that things can be seen and understood in two contrasting ways.

He is expected to start away to third-division Oxford in the [FA Cup](https://theathletic.com/football/fa-cup/) on Monday night. Arsenal’s players have a couple of days off now to rest their bodies and minds, and the majority who faced Newcastle will have a little longer as they won’t be expected to have much involvement in that FA Cup tie. Marching off into the distance with a comfortable points lead is not how it tends to work, even at the best of times — Arsenal were not even top after 17 games in their Invincibles season. They were a point behind Manchester United, and on the same points as It must be said that that was not the only kink in the execution of the game. Young Gun: Hubert Graczyk | Young gun | News (Arsenal.com)

We catch up with our young Gunner to find out how he enjoyed his trip to Dubai with the first-team.

Whenever you are around the first-team it gives you a boost and you just want to get better and better. I want to keep developing and I know that whatever the right next step is for me will come. Terry Mason was head of the under-21 keepers last year, and he’s now transitioned to the first-team, which is great for us young keepers – he’s made it a smooth transition for us too and he knows what we can do. The main difference between going away with the first-team compared to being with the under-21s is that they travel on planes and we usually get the coach! The keepers always go out early to get our work done, about 20 or 30 minutes before the others, and then we join in with the rest of the squad. I know I’ve got a long way to secure my place here, but it’s a really good step to take, training with the first-team every day for a longer period.
