“We’ve just got to make the best of it. “I have a lot of confidence in him,” Clifford said. You’ve just got to hope for the best and we’ll be OK. “I just told the guys, for sure we don’t have a lot of room for error, but we can play a lot better,” coach Steve Clifford said. And the name is a familiar one. “It’s always exciting when you get to compete, especially in front of the home crowd. “We’ve just got to clean it up from the beginning. He even was paired with LaMelo Ball in the backcourt on a couple of occasions, which is something that hasn’t happened at any point all season. We do have the personnel, though, to his point.” It’s tough playing against the best players in the world and you can’t just turn it on whenever you want to. Awakening way too late in a 121-115 loss to Los Angeles at Spectrum Center is just the latest unflattering defeat for the Hornets. A new calendar year changed nothing and it’s awfully difficult to foresee the Hornets’ struggles lightening up.

“I just always try to play the game and read the game the right way throughout the course of the 48 minutes,” James said. James missed all five of his three-point attempts — the only blemish in a game in which everything else was working. “Obviously, I haven’t shot the three-ball well but I still feel good when I’m taking them. “They just made it tough,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. It’s always a blessing for me to just be out there with the guys and try to make plays happen and help us win ballgames. He pounded his chest and barked at no one in particular, almost annoyed at the ineffective strategy the Hornets were throwing at him. and three steals. But it’s a testament to what he does on a daily basis. Michael Jordan did it for Washington twice in the 2001-02 season. He flew around on the break, catching a pass from Dennis Schroder that had his teammates in disbelief. Austin Reaves peeled the bandages and ice bags off his knees as he walked toward his postgame news conference. He’s always the first one in the training room, the first one taking care of his body, and also getting the work in as well.

Evening assuming that, in a broader definition of "postseason," Jones is including the play-in tournament that allows teams to qualify for the playoffs proper, yours truly is actually somewhat skeptical that LA will make it. Whether he is speculating or speaking from the vantage point of an inside tip, it's fascinating that LA would have any kind of confidence at all, given how badly the Lakers face-planted last year. There's no guarantee that the Lakers can make the postseason, so the team's supposed optimism is, frankly, unfounded and a bit disconcerting.

Because the Game Gods will always pay you back if you always commit to the game the right way, and I’m still trying to do this at this point in my career.” It was made all the more difficult by a second-half scratch for Russell Westbrook, who had a tough night with two points and two assists on 1-for-8 shooting. He also hit early turnaround jumpers in the paint, an early sign that the 38-year-old was primed for another big game after his season-high 47 points in Atlanta. The game had a different flavor than the previous matchup, when the Lakers gave up 32 points off of turnovers and 14 second-chance points, as Coach Darvin Ham pointedly referenced in his pregame comments. But for Ball, in particular, he found tougher defensive resistance against Patrick Beverley (who had three first-half blocked shots) and Schröder, going just 9 for 22 with five turnovers. Down 15 with 5:24 remaining on the game clock, Charlotte kicked off a 15-6 run to pull to within six with 80 seconds to go. LeBron James (15) and Austin Reaves (13) combined for 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting in the quarter as Los Angeles’ momentum kept rolling right until the midway point of the fourth quarter. LaMelo Ball (24 points) stretched his 20-point streak to 12 games and Mason Plumlee racked up 18 points and 14 rebounds for his second straight double-double and third in the past four outings.

Recap: Hornets comeback comes up short in loss to Lakers, 121-115 (At The Hive)

Terry Rozier and LaMelo Ball sparked a fourth quarter rally that didn't quite have enough time.

LeBron missed a free throw and Terry hit his third three of the quarter to keep the Hornets alive. Rozier did most of his damage in the game’s waning moments, when he hit a couple of 3-pointers and converted an and-1 while getting hit in the face. LaMelo Ball attacked the basket for a few layups to keep the Hornets alive. Gordon Hayward found Mark Williams with a pocket pass for a dunk to start the fourth quarter. The Hornets got off to a sloppy start while the Lakers got several jumpers to fall. The frustration got to LaMelo Ball, who had to go to the bench with his third foul late in the half.

When LeBron James missed time due to injury earlier in the season, he gushed about the performance of teammate Anthony Davis in his stead.

Davis probably isn't the best player in the It's kept the Lakers alive in the play-in race. James probably isn't the best player in basketball anymore. What they're doing separately should be a reminder to their opponents -- and their own, hesitant front office -- of what this team can be when their superstars are eventually able to share the court again. The narrative surrounding Davis has been that injuries have sapped him of the athleticism that once made him great. In the process, he's guided the Lakers through perhaps the hardest portion of their schedule. But it isn't over because, in Davis' absence, James may have reclaimed the mantle of best player in the league. It is perhaps the purest expression of superstardom that exists in basketball. "AD was the best player in the league over the last four-to-five games," James told reporters late in November. He didn't slow down when James returned to the fold either. More importantly, he lifted a team that was 2-9 at the time of James' injury back up to 5-11 upon his return. In the five games James is referring to, Davis averaged 33.2 points and 17.4 rebounds per game.

Of course, making this deal would cost the Lakers one, if not both, of their future first-round draft picks, which is very important to note because they only have two left that they can trade. Similar to the reasoning for picking up Reddish, the Lakers need more scorers, and in particular, more shooting. When he’s been healthy, the Lakers have been rolling with Anthony Davis at center, despite his desire to not play the position. Beverley hasn’t panned out at all this season, but he’s still a strong defender, which could be appealing to the Knicks, and Nunn just isn’t getting minutes this season. The trade deadline is fast approaching, and it feels like that will be the last chance for Los Angeles to save their season. The hope was that if they were able to shore up their bench over the offseason, they would be able to emerge as a title contender again this season.

Defensively, they rank 28th in rating in third quarters. They have been outscored by 121 points in third quarters this season, only one point away from being the worst margin in the league.
