Knicks snap 3-game home losing skid, beat Suns 102-83 (Sacramento Bee)

Julius Randle had 28 points and 16 rebounds to lead the New York Knicks to a 102-83 win over the Phoenix Suns on Monday in New York.

Myles Turner had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyrese Haliburton added 16 points and eight assists for the Pacers. Tyler Herro added 23 points and Victor Oladipo scored 15 off the bench for the Heat, who have won four of five. The Suns, who lost for the sixth time in seven games, scored the first four points. Bones Hyland added 18 points off the bench, but Denver was undone by its sluggish start on the second game of a back-to-back following Sunday’s home win against Boston. Doncic has scored at least 32 points in each of the last six games, including three 50-point games during that span. Looney had a career-high 21 rebounds to go with 14 points and five assists. Williamson, averaging 26 points, gingerly ran to the corner and lingered on the court for a bit before he was lifted from the game. Terry Rozier had 27 points to lead the Hornets, who have lost 13 of their last 16 games. Young made four crucial free throws late in the first OT and finished with 30 points and 14 assists. Irving shot 11 for 14, Durant was 10 for 14 and neither played in the fourth quarter for the Nets, who are 23-7 under Jacque Vaughn. Warren finished with 18 points and Brooklyn shot 62% from the field. Mitchell’s total matched the eighth-highest in league history and marked the most points by any player since Lakers great Kobe Bryant had 81 against Toronto on Jan.

The Knicks struggled in his absence in ball movement outside of Randle, and Quickley’s isolation plays. In the third quarter, to bump the score back up to 29, Randle caught an errant pass from Brunson, who leaped into the air before he knew what to do. That trip was primarily behind the 18-0 run the Knicks put on the Suns in the second quarter. That spacing helped the Knicks shoot 47% collectively from the field, with the starters shooting a combined 16 of 34. He is the only player capable of initiating his own offense and taking advantage of clear mismatches with his offensive skill set. But the return of Brunson saved the team from the type of collapse that haunted the team in late December. In the first half, he had 16 points (5-9), four assists, and three rebounds. The Suns shot 22.7% in the first quarter. It also allowed Quickley to play off-guard, with the Knicks only committing one turnover in the quarter. It all started with the game against the Dallas Mavericks, where Tom Thibodeau played Quickley a ridiculous 51 minutes through overtime, exhausting the young player and leaving him without the legs to his jumper and floater. [Phoenix Suns](https://www.brightsideofthesun.com/) (20-18) threw a double at Randle, who had the ball at the right side of the perimeter. No matter, Randle rose in stride, drilling a three right in the eye of Bridges.

He's come full circle since then, earning back the MVP chants he lost a season ago as he's helped the Knicks return to playoff contention where they belong. Randle might not be the face-of-the-franchise-style superstar the Knicks hoped for when they re-signed him, but right now, he's playing like the kind of All-Star that can keep them in the playoff race. He's not making 3-pointers at quite the same rate he was then, but he's thriving in the paint again. He remains a stellar passer for a forward, and that has given the Knicks a less predictable offense now that A year ago, the Knicks likely had a serious case of buyer's remorse. He wound up finishing the game with 28 points, 16 rebounds and six assists in the victory, but those numbers are actually pretty pedestrian compared to the 33.8 points, 12.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists he averaged in the five games that preceded it.

After the game, Randle said that “Brunson’s presence has taken the pressure off” him, to which Brunson replied that “it’s a nice compliment” before countering by saying that “it’s a lot of credit to Julius (because) he’s done everything (and) he’s been a great teammate, so I’m just doing my part,“ concluded Brunson. “When we won eight in a row, the defensive end was big for us. Almost a year after giving a thumbs down to fans at MSG, New York Knicks fans rained MVP chants down on Julius Randle in Monday's win.

Knicks fans were dissatisfied with the forward and their team after watching them make an incredible run to the playoffs a few months before. “It’s definitely a lot better feeling to be on that side.” Entering the 2022-23 season, there was a lot of speculation about the approach that Randle would take, and so far, what he’s been doing has been working well for him. That might not seem like much but given Randle’s history with the Flash forward to the start of 2023. In the Knicks’ first game of the new year, Randle led the team with 28 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists in a 102-83 rout of the Suns.

'No fight in us': 5 takeaways as Phoenix Suns air out issues after ... (AZCentral.com)

NEW YORK – Deandre Ayton doesn't recognize this team. The Phoenix Suns used to take every loss personally and hated dropping two games in a row.

“We just got to really lock in and fight,” Ayton said. Booker averages 9.2, but he isn’t the team leader in points in the paint. “We were getting stops, we were sharing the ball, getting in the paint and making plays for each other. The Suns had three starters – Landry Shamet, Chris Paul and Torrey Craig – combine to shoot 0-for-13 from the field for zero points in the first half. Phoenix led 4-0 with 10:11 left in the first quarter on Ayton buckets. Case in point, Lee had a transition opportunity. “It’s a mind-boggling thing, but it's happened too many times to this team,” Suns coach Monty Williams said. I’m used to us being down a 100, and we still are going to pull out and win the game. Ahead of that, here are five takeaways from Monday's loss to the Knicks: I think next game, everybody knows what the task is and everybody should know their damn assignment and know their damn role and do their role perfectly. “I feel like we came out with urgency,” Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley said. Led by their defense, the Knicks romp and rampage to their second straight W.

After their stirring 21-gun win Monday, the Knicks go for win #21 tomorrow when they host the Spurs. With the win the Knicks are 20-18, victors in 10 of their last 15 games. Literally what’s next is a rematch with San Antonio, whom the Knicks should be up to take down after last week’s loss to them. In the second quarter, already up double-digits, the Knicks over nearly five minutes threw a 21-0 run at the Suns. The 83 points were the second-fewest allowed by the Knicks this season; after giving up 81 in a win over Cleveland a month ago they ripped off eight straight wins, and the way they looked yesterday they may be embarking on another run of conquest. In the first quarter New York gained separation with a 14-0 run and surrendered just 11 points without committing a single foul.

The only team I can think of who’ve tried to build a championship off of a superstar trade are the L.A. You know what else the Knicks haven’t done for a long time? How many of the current title contenders came into being because of a huge trade for a star? The superstar fetish is supposedly a response to the franchise not having won a title in so long. Milwaukee did win a title after making a big trade for a star, but Jrue Holiday was the finishing piece after they’d already ascended to be good-but-not-quite-there. He’s been clear on how that happens: it ain’t via the draft — too many variables — and it ain’t via free agency — until/unless the Knicks are ever good on their own first, no self-respecting superstar has any reason to come here when there are warmer, winning-er franchises in states with lower income tax, or none at all. The moment the Knick title teams took off was when they traded away a Hall of Famer center in Walt Bellamy for Dave DeBusschere. A few friends asked me today if Mitchell’s 71-point night made me regret the Knicks not pulling the trigger for him. Most pro’ly also remember it came in a year the team didn’t make the playoffs. Last night Donovan Mitchell had one of the greatest scoring games in league history. The other starters — Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Landry Fields — contributed a mixture of passing, perimeter shooting and intelligent defense. One of those paragraphs speaks to where the franchise stands as of now, January 3, 2023.
