NHL-best Bruins outlast Penguins in Winter Classic at Fenway (ESPN)

The Boston Bruins, who lead the NHL in points this season, defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 to win this year's Winter Classic in front of 39243 fans on ...

The goal came soon after the Bruins had killed four minutes of Penguins' power-play time after minor penalties on forward [David Pastrnak](https://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/3114778/david-pastrnak) and defenseman [Hampus Lindholm](https://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/2968818/hampus-lindholm). As has become an NHL outdoor game tradition, both teams arrived at the Classic wearing attention-grabbing attire. One major change between the two games: The rink for this year's edition ran parallel to the Green Monster in left field, with a replica baseball diamond hockey rink built in between. "You don't grow up thinking you're gonna be playing a hockey game at Fenway Park," he said. This was the second Winter Classic to be held at Fenway Park. It was a pretty even game," Sullivan said. "When he plays with that confidence and he skates, the puck seems to find him sometimes. Ullmark raised his arms in the air in celebration as the Bruins surrounded him, while Pittsburgh's players momentarily remained on the bench until the no-goal was confirmed. "It was a real competitive hockey game. Boston has the best record in the NHL this season at 29-4-4. Boston was reminded about its prowess as a third-period team, where it now has a plus-41 goal differential. "Just jumping in cold into an outdoor game carries a few more challenges than a regular game."

3 things we learned from another classic Bruins' Fenway win (Boston.com)

The Bruins feel they have "something special going on." Read more on Boston.com.

The development continued Monday as the Bruins struggled to generate quality scoring chances in front of DeSmith, and before him, an injured Tristian Jarry. “It will make it that much better, and I was proud of the way the guys for digging in. No matter what happens the rest of the way, the 2022-23 Bruins have etched another classic moment for their 99-year history. The Bruins struggled to find their 200-foot stride for the last 15 games or so. DeBrusk and Ullmark put the Bruins in a prime position to earn another two points. I think that was the talk — we have to find a way to win this one,” Foligno said of his speech amid his first career outdoor game. “In talking to Bergy and some of the other guys who’ve played, you only remember the ones you win. It’s something you dream of doing — you dream of scoring in the Winter Classic…I’ve played in three. And if you’re in the moment, it’s okay to embrace the fact that this is Fenway Park, and it’s a wonderful event; and we’re very lucky to be a part of it. “We believe that if we are thinking about the details of our game, and that’s staying in the moment. More often than not, he’s allowed the usual leadership core of Bergeron, Marchand, Krejci, and countless others to lead by example. “It’s been a whirlwind, to say the least,” DeBrusk said after hearing the cheers from a sold-out crowd of 39,243 on Monday.

Ironically, it was a stellar third period that powered the Bruins to a comeback win over the Penguins in their only other meeting earlier this season. The Bruins finally got on the board 7:46 into the third period when DeBrusk scored in front of the net. The Bruins have scored the second-most third-period goals with 54, and they've allowed the fewest with 23. One of the biggest factors in their early success has been third period dominance. These players have a very strong belief that if they continue to play their game and stick with what's worked for them, eventually they will be rewarded. You don't want to come after a game and think you could have done more or wish you had done something, because you never know -- we might not get another chance to do it.

DeBrusk Powers Bruins to Winter Classic Victory (NHL.com)

Winger potted two third-period goals to lift Boston over Pens at Fenway Park.

You just smile and enjoy it." "Just lucky to be with this group of guys. We're the best third-period team and the league, and let's go prove it." I feel very blessed to be a part of those goals," said DeBrusk. "Sometimes you get yourself into positions where you don't know where the puck's coming…it's a game of inches…I remember being on the ground and seeing it in, but definitely was lucky on that one and happy to contribute." We don't want to come after a game like tonight and think that we could have done more or that we should have done something. "Honestly just want to help in any way I can, and that's just kind of what everyone in our lineup has. "It's very rare that you get another chance to do it. "This is an event…this is a dream come true, and we don't want to waste it. "He's a lot tougher than people think and he's more committed than people are aware and because of those things, his game is going," said Montgomery. DeBrusk has been doing things right for quite some time now as he's built on a strong second half from last season to compile 16 goals and 30 points through 36 games during this 2022-23 campaign, his sixth with the Black & Gold. After the first two periods turned out to be a bit of a slog for the Bruins as they struggled to find much cohesion offensively, DeBrusk pulled Boston back into it during the final frame when he knotted things at 1 with 12:14 remaining.

With the Bruins struggling to score Monday, Montgomery did what he often does, temporarily reuniting David Pastrnak with Bergeron and Brad Marchand in hopes of creating a goal. He’s been DeBrusk’s teammate through all of his ups and downs. Honestly, I want to help in any way I can.” To do that he demoted DeBrusk. “He’s a lot tougher than people think. He comes up with a lot of pucks because of his relentless pursuit.” The Bruins have been the best team in the NHL this year for a lot of reasons. The Bruins held on for the remaining 2:24 to prevail in Monday’s Winter Classic at Fenway Park. DeBrusk has 16 goals and 14 assists and is a +15. BOSTON — After he tucked the puck behind Casey DeSmith, Jake DeBrusk, spun, first to look at the Fenway Park crowd and then to his teammates rushing toward him in celebration. He bounced up and down Boston’s four lines and was occasionally a healthy scratch. A year ago DeBrusk was trade bait, a wild card.

Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark fulfills longtime dream in 2023 Winter ... (NBC Sports Boston)

In many ways, it was fitting that Linus Ullmark was arguably the Bruins' best player in their exciting 2023 Winter Classic win over the Pittsburgh Penguins ...

So many players have exceeded expectations and provided the level of depth needed for Boston to have a chance of making a deep playoff run in the spring. Ullmark had wanted to play in this kind of environment for a long time, ever since he saw Sidney Crosby and the Penguins win the first ever Winter Classic against the Buffalo Sabres back in 2008. He's playing the best hockey of his career and has helped transform the Bruins from a very good team last season into the Stanley Cup favorite in early 2023. "Got a shot on net and tried to put it in the corner. They nearly did in the final moments of the game, but Ullmark stayed calm, cool and collected as time ran out on Pittsburgh's comeback attempt. [frontrunner for the Vezina Trophy](https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/bruins/linus-ullmark-bruins-mvp-vezina-trophy-favorite-two-months-season) made a couple huge saves in the first period as the Penguins came out playing fast and aggressive offensively.

Linus Ullmark was the Bruins' MVP in Winter Classic (CBS News)

If not for Linus Ullmark showing up ready to play, it could have been a whole lot worse.

He stopped a point shot with a man in front with 10 seconds left in the game, and then he stopped a one-time bid from the right dot with 2.5 seconds left. And with 26 saves on 27 Pittsburgh shots, Ullmark inched his save percentage up to .939, which is also best in the league. Two months ago, it was too soon to say Ullmark belonged in a legitimate Vezina conversation. Jake DeBrusk scored seconds after a power play expired, and he tallied the game-winner with just 2:24 left in regulation to lift the Bruins to the 2-1 win. His composure in particular stood out late in the second period when Kasperi Kapanen -- the lone goal scorer in the game to that point -- walked in front of the net all alone with the puck. "He gives us the ability to win every night. But league-wide, in terms of goaltender contributions this season, nobody's been on Ullmark's level. His performance on that stage made sure of that. Yet despite the 1-0 deficit after two periods, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery recognized that his team could have been in a much worse position. And if even one of those pucks had gotten past Ullmark, there's no telling how the game might have played out. The 29-year-old Swede showed on the game's largest regular-season stage that the Bruins' red-hot first half of the season has not all been about goal-scoring. The degree of difficulty was high.

"He's a great guy that wants to get better," said Bergeron, the Boston captain. "I think it's been rocky at times the few years before that but, that being said, he stuck with it and showed some character. I think he loves this group and I think he's really cherishing the opportunity he has with the players he's playing with. He 42 points (25 goals, 17 assists) in 77 games last season and is on the upswing again. He's on pace to get 30 goals, over 30 goals (an NHL career-high 32), and it doesn't matter where I use him, he seems to spark the people he plays with." I don't think the Bruins' leadership will let that happen, but if I'm a coach, I'm saying it's a possibility so let's get on them right away. When we're talking about forechecking them, it's important to note that last season they used to rim the puck a lot, but this season they're using the middle of the ice a lot more. If the guy does pinch on the weakside they still have people above all the time. But when we're looking at their power play, we're looking at Bergeron in the pocket on their first unit. In the power-play meeting, our attention will be on how we're going to try to break through the neutral zone and what the Bruins do in the zone to kill. That's really what you have to try to avoid, because if it starts going east-west on you, you could be cooked. You'll want to point out that they're finding ways to win right now, but I don't think they're playing their best. They're so structured and aggressive on the PK. But they have to go over it again, so it's Thursday morning and let's assume we're going to focus on the power play. Then you have Marchand and David Pastrnak on the flank. Todd McLellan and his coaching staff, after playing the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, will turn their focus to the Bruins, the best team in the NHL this season. They're aggressive and looking to expose you even when Charlie Coyle and Tomas Nosek are out there.

Haggs: Foligno 'Cherishes' First Winter Classic Experience with Bruins (Boston Hockey Now)

Boston Bruins veteran Nick Foligno "cherished" his first Winter Classic experience and played a vital leadership role in the outdoor win.

Foligno has really added something to the Boston Bruins this season and that was the case again in a Winter Classic setting where the B’s wanted to make another declarative winning statement as they have all season. “In the third period this team finds ways to raise their level and take over a game,” said Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery. Prior to that there hadn’t been much to write home about for the Black and Gold in a game where it seemed like they weren’t playing the simple style that an outdoor hockey game really dictates at the NHL level. It really is a family atmosphere, and they really do care about those moments, and they allow you to enjoy them. You watch these games all your career and see how special they are and what they mean to players, and then to be in one…the way we dressed up [in old time “Well, I’ll say that I scored the two goals,” said a smiling Nick Foligno, when asked what stories he’ll tell about the Winter Classic experience years down the road when some may have forgotten that Jake DeBrusk scored both third period strikes for the victory.
