Raiders expected to explore trade offers for QB Derek Carr this ... (NFL.com)

Las Vegas is expected to explore trade options for quarterback Derek Carr this offseason, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports.

Meanwhile, Carr is [away from the team](https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-benching-qb-derek-carr-2022-season-jarrett-stidham-starter) for the final two weeks to avoid distractions. But make no mistake: Carr has no plans to retire and has no plans to go out like this. While no trade could be official until the league year begins, trades are routinely agreed to in principle before then being finalized in mid-March. He understands the scenario that we're in." "But we think it's an opportunity to evaluate a younger player who hasn't had much time to play. [he'd rather quit football than play for another team](https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-derek-carr-i-d-probably-quit-football-if-i-had-to-play-for-somebody-e).

Latest On Raiders, Derek Carr (profootballrumors.com)

The Raiders will start Jarrett Stidham today in what will be his first NFL regular season start and the unofficial beginning of the post-Derek Carr era at ...

[As the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin writes](https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/12/31/sports/with-derek-carrs-benching-stars-are-aligning-tom-brady-raiders-finally-get-hitched/?p1=Article_Feed_ContentQuery&p1=Article_Feed_ContentQuery), a Brady-to-Vegas contract could also accompany another un-retirement from tight end [Rob Gronkowski](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GronRo00.htm?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-01-01_pfr) (something which [nearly took place](https://www.profootballrumors.com/2022/12/rob-gronkowski-discussed-second-unretirement-with-buccaneers) in time for this season). The 49ers granting [Jimmy Garoppolo](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GaroJi00.htm?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-01-01_pfr) permission to seek a trade, then later retaining him, represents a recent example of such a development. [Tom Brady](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BradTo00.htm?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-01-01_pfr). The fact that Carr previously made public his intention of only ever playing for the Raiders is not expected to be a factor in this case, Rapoport notes. Vegas made headlines this week when they [benched the latter](https://www.profootballrumors.com/2022/12/raiders-to-bench-derek-carr-start-jarrett-stidham) for the remainder of the season. The latter has guided the Buccaneers to another NFC South title, but is [not expected to return to Tampa this spring](https://www.profootballrumors.com/2022/12/tom-brady-unlikely-to-play-for-buccaneers-in-2023). Much is still to be determined between now and the onset of the offseason, in any event, which also raises the possibility that the two sides could decide against a separation. Carr’s [three-year extension](https://www.profootballrumors.com/2022/04/raiders-derek-carr-agree-to-121mm-deal) signed last spring will see his $41.9MM 2023 salary become guaranteed on February 15, creating the narrow window in which a deal is expected to officially take place. Carr has a no-trade clause, so the possibility remains that a release allowing him to become a free agent will be the ultimate outcome of this situation. [Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirms](https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-expected-to-explore-trade-offers-for-qb-derek-carr-this-offseason?campaign=Twitter_atn) that Vegas is “expected to explore trade options” for the three-time Pro Bowler. The 31-year-old has [stepped away from the team](https://www.profootballrumors.com/2022/12/derek-carr-to-step-away-from-raiders-to-close-regular-season) as they begin the transition away from him, and, presumably, the process of finding a suitable destination to send him in the near future.

Derek Carr fiasco a far cry from Unitas, Peyton or even Matt Ryan ... (The Athletic)

Have NFL QB mentalities changed? There are signs. And then there are those in the league who don't change, like Tom Brady and Mike Tomlin.

The Seahawks can also sneak into the playoffs with a win against the [Rams](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/rams/), provided the Lions beat the Packers. [Didn’t come close to happening](https://theathletic.com/4050802/2023/01/01/vikings-packers-week-17-playoffs/). Brown](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/aj-brown-EJI9GRcayoZKGPpF/), accounted for the Eagles’ only touchdown Sunday, a 78-yarder that moved Brown past 1,400 yards for the season. [Jalen Hurts](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/jalen-hurts-yhzPJprUoEnfzPvf/) to see if the Eagles’ injured starting quarterback plays in Week 18 instead of resting for the playoffs. This past week, [Derek Carr](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/derek-carr-linudLDO0YoIWthi/) left the [Las Vegas Raiders](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/raiders/) after the team announced [Jarrett Stidham](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/jarrett-stidham-wve6GwYV8FPEOaSt/) would replace him. NFL Exec Rips 'Classless' Raiders for Treating Derek Carr Like ... (Bleacher Report)

An anonymous NFL executive took aim at the Las Vegas Raiders this week for their benching of quarterback Derek Carr. According to.

[Mike Sando](https://theathletic.com/4045244/2023/01/02/derek-carr-raiders-nfl-playoffs/) of The Athletic, the exec expressed their belief that the Raiders were "classless" in their handling of Carr: "Derek Carr is one of the 12 or 15 or 18 best quarterbacks. Nine of their 10 losses have been by one score, and many of them saw Vegas blow fairly sizable leads. He also threw for 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns and a league-high 14 interceptions.

Derek Carr Next Houston Texans Quarterback (Battle Red Blog)

The 2021 edition of the Las Vegas Raiders overachieved with a backup coach and injury riddled roster. This year, former New England Patriots offensive ...

With the obvious relationship between McDaniels and Houston’s general manager Nick Caserio, if there’s a deal to be made, these two men are certainly in a position to make it happen. [Texans]Consider them dark-horse favorites, not because their lineup screams playoff material, which should matter to Carr at this point in his career, but because of the family connection: Derek’s brother, David, was the franchise’s first draft pick and QB, and Derek has said publicly he wished the [Texans]had drafted him coming out of Fresno State. As a head coach, McDaniels has only won 17 of the 44 games he’s led. In 2018, Carr finished the year with a 68.9 completion percentage. The veteran just this offseason signed a three-year, $121.5 million extension tying him to Las Vegas through 2025, and was a catalyst for the team’s blockbuster acquisition of wide receiver [Davante Adams]. Only nine quarterbacks in NFL history have won a [TCU](https://www.frogsowar.com)’s Quentin Johnston. The Raiders announced last week that Carr was getting benched for the rest of the season, which cued all the normal NFL divorce drama such as Carr unfollowing team social media accounts and physically leaving the organization for the remainder of the season. Even so, coach Josh McDaniels is making a change at quarterback, announcing Wednesday that [Derek Carr]has been benched for backup [Jarrett Stidham]for the remainder of the year. But he’s been less efficient than usual under McDaniels, struggling to elevate a mercurial offense, and finish games in which Las Vegas has led, during a 6-9 start. This year, former [New England Patriots](https://www.patspulpit.com/) offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels joined the silver & black as the new head coach and things went, well, not good. McDaniels left the door open for a QB swap after Week 16’s narrow loss to the [Steelers], and now it’s official: Carr is out as Las Vegas’ signal-caller, and perhaps for good.

Jets 'might keep Zach Wilson as Raiders look to deal Derek Carr' (Daily Mail)

While Derek Carr's time with the Las Vegas Raiders is reportedly winding down, the New York Jets are open to retaining struggling second-year quarterback ...

By trading him before the mid-February deadline, the Raiders would preserve a cap figure of just $5.6 million for the three-time Pro Bowler, giving Las Vegas' front office more financial flexibility to pursue free agents By trading him before the mid-February deadline, the Raiders would preserve a cap figure of just $5.6 million for the three-time Pro Bowler, giving Las Vegas' front office more financial flexibility to pursue free agents. Wilson, meanwhile, has struggled in his first two seasons out of BYU. The team has reached the playoffs only twice since he took over under center, falling in the Wild Card round in both 2016 and 2021. The Jets also see Wilson as a good teammate, who handled his demotions well this season. Could Derek Carr be dealt during Super Bowl week? Raiders facing ... (CBSSports.com)

Carr is likely done as the franchise quarterback for Las Vegas.

At best, a second and conditional third (like the [Carson Wentz](/nfl/players/1907522/carson-wentz/) deal) would emerge for Carr, who'd get a change of scenery from a team who believes enough in him to not wait another month and play Quarterback Roulette in free agency. If the Raiders are moving on from him, they'll have to have a trade in place by that date or outright release him. While that may be partly true, Carr is also not at the team facilities to eliminate the chance of a football-related injury that would ultimately trigger $40.4 million in guaranteed salary over the next two years, according to sources. Staying with the Raiders would absolutely require a re-worked contract. The Raiders aren't saying "never" but it's very unlikely. While Carr's play certainly warranted a close inspection at a potential benching, it's Carr's contract that ultimately led to the decision being made.
