“This is the year to do it. Saying Bosa “improves our chances significantly,” Staley added the four-time Pro Bowl player took a clear step Sunday toward being fully back. I thought you saw that in the run game. … I think it will pay off down the road showing that we can run the ball in multiple ways.” Against the Rams, they also righted an offense that had been sputtering, struggling to sustain drives and finish in the end zone. He also wasn’t sacked after being sacked 25 times over the previous six games. “The goal is to find your rhythm … “I don’t know,” Williams said when asked to describe what he did. Austin Ekeler had a career-best 72-yard run on a day when he finished with 10 carries for 122 yards and two touchdowns. “We’re the team that you have to fear,” tight end Gerald Everett said. They can clinch the conference’s top wild-card spot with a victory over Denver in their regular-season finale. Of the Chargers’ first eight victories, seven were decided by one score.

Chargers Rout Rams 31-10 With Complete Performance (Sports Illustrated)

"I wasn't able to watch the replay on the videoboard, and so we got up to the line of scrimmage just to get a play off to make sure that maybe he was in bounds. If the Ravens lose one of their final two games and the Chargers come out on top next week in Denver, they can move up into the No. I think it was very important for him to get out there and play because the players know that they need the football shape. The Chargers held the Rams to 273 total yards, while tacking on three sacks – one being a strip sack from Kyle Van Noy in which he recovered the loose ball. Bosa was on a snap count restriction, but Staley said it was good for him to get a steady diet of reps in his highly-anticipated return. That's what I think led to a complete performance, that third quarter leading to an even better fourth quarter, in terms of time of possession." "I think that our guys came out on a mission in that third quarter. On defense, the Chargers welcomed back edge rusher Joey Bosa following a groin tear that required surgery and held him out of play since Sept. "I think you saw kind of a complete performance by our group from start to finish. Ekeler also became the fifth running back to ever record 100 or more receptions in a single-season. "I think that we're improving every time that we go out. They totaled 431 yards of total offense with four touchdowns, and held the Rams to 10 points, including a scoreless second half.

After holding the Rams to another three-and-out, the Chargers decided to hold some of their starters out, including Justin Herbert and Austin Ekeler. That, combined with a false start penalty, effectively killed their drive and the ball went back to the Chargers. Williams added to his highlight reel on the ensuing drive with an incredible one-handed catch up the left sideline that helped get the Chargers deep into Rams territory. Herbert fired a laser to Gerald Everett between a pair of Rams defenders to push their lead to 14 points. After the duo got their unit down to the 23-yard line, Malcolm Brown went untouched up the middle for a touchdown. A 20-yard pass to Williams brought the offense to the 10-yard line and Ekeler did the rest by bowling over defenders into the end zone. The Rams took advantage of another chunk play with Mayfield hitting Van Jefferson for a 39-yard gain. With 8:25 remaining in the second quarter, Ekeler had four carries for a whopping 98 yards rushing. While the defense looked to be completely out of place on the play, the Rams were aided by another massive hold on Drue Tranquill. With a little over 60 seconds remaining in the opening period, the Rams held the lead 3-0. After a missed DPI call on Mike Williams the previous drives, the referees missed a clear hold on Nasir Adderley which allowed Akers to turn the corner. [Chargers](https://www.boltsfromtheblue.com/) came out agains the Rams led by an efficient offense paired with a defense that stood tall when it matter most.

After throwing for 230 yards and two touchdowns against the Broncos, the former first-round pick completed 11 of his 19 attempts for only 132 yards on Sunday. Besides his impressive rushing numbers in Week 17, his most impressive play might have come on a play in the third quarter when he picked up a blitzing Nassir Adderley to protect Baker Mayfield. While the defense wasn’t the primary reason the Rams lost on Sunday, they struggled to get off the field on third down versus the Chargers. To follow up his impressive performance on Christmas, Akers rushed for 123 yards on 19 attempts versus the Chargers. The Los Angeles Rams were unable to build off of their 51-14 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 16, losing to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Following the loss, the Rams are now 5-11 with one week remaining in the regular season.

Studs and duds from Chargers' victory over Rams (Chargers Wire)

Here is a look at the good and not-so-good from Los Angeles' victory. Stud: Austin Ekeler. What a game it was for Ekeler, who had the longest run of ...

Whenever Derwin James, who missed Sunday’s game with a concussion, is off the field, the deeper levels of the defense lose most of their teeth. On Sunday, the Chargers were far from sound: every run from Akers seemed peppered with flailing Chargers defenders and ended with him dragging defenders a few extra yards. The former Ram has continued to be perhaps the best free-agent acquisition of the year for the Chargers and perhaps across the entire league when you consider value. What’s worse is that the defensive line was pretty frequently moved right off the ball when the Rams chose to run, which represents a disappointing downturn from the past few weeks. The Chargers don’t have a high-quality run defense; this season has been evident of that at every turn. What a game it was for Ekeler, who had the longest run of his career on the second quarter 72-yard touchdown scamper.

But, the Rams defense would then force a Chargers punt, making the turnover not as costly as it could have been. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert would come out of the game, as backup Chase Daniel would finish out what had become a blowout situation. Justin Herbert connected with former Ram Gerald Everett to give the Chargers a 24-10 lead with 8:46 left in the third quarter. However, the Rams defense would then force a punt of their own, getting the ball right back for Baker Mayfield and company. [Los Angeles Rams](https://www.turfshowtimes.com/), hoping to build on their positive momentum against the L.A. The Chargers would respond with a nice drive of their own, except they would cash in for the first touchdown of the contest as an Austin Ekeler TD would give the Chargers a 7-3 lead with 13:40 remaining in the first half.

Rams-Chargers Winners & Losers: Austin Ekeler dominated battle ... (Turf Show Times)

Cam Akers and Van Jefferson played well on offense. Defense struggled across the board.

It’s worth mentioning that the difficulty of his job goes up without having Donald, Robinson, and/or Gaines in front of him. Whenever the Chargers had a big passing play, it seemed to me that Taylor Rapp usually wasn’t too far away - and that helps explain how he recorded nine total tackles in the game. The rookie UDFA got an opportunity from Baker Mayfield on a long ball along the sideline. The throw fell to the ground incomplete. [Los Angeles Rams](https://www.turfshowtimes.com/) [ceded the battle for LA](https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2023/1/1/23534800/rams-chargers-final-score-playoffs-draft-update) to the [Los Angeles Chargers](https://www.boltsfromtheblue.com/). The first was the aforementioned wheel route to Akers. They also added two touchdowns on the ground. The strip sack would have taken the Chargers out of field goal position. They have just one game remaining before we close the book on 2022 - and the Rams can play spoiler to the Jefferson had his best outing of the year (which probably tells you just how low the bar is) with three receptions for 77 yards. While he was active for this game, he didn’t play his usual volume of snaps. Akers deserves some blame for only going after the ball with one hand instead of two, but the pass also should have been thrown with more air under it.

The players made this happen, by believing in Staley’s message. The expanded passing options have created more opportunities to run the ball, and vice versa. The NFL demands a lot of precision from quarterbacks, and I think that the margin for error increases when you throw it to Mike Williams.” The Chargers are 10-6. They did that only twice in their first 14 games. Staley made this happen, by keeping the team together while they played short-handed. Just as important are the returns of his weapons. Williams leaped and turned clockwise to make the grab, landing on his toes before falling out of bounds. What they’re doing is the antithesis of “Chargering.” Whereas many of their fellow contenders are dealing with new injuries, the once short-handed Chargers are becoming healthier. Bosa was credited with a couple of tackles. “I think every quarterback has to have that player, or players, that when it’s tight, that I can throw the football to,” Staley said. Then he runs for consecutive 100-yard games to get back in Rams’ good graces.

Rams takeaways: Running improved, passing regressed vs. Chargers (The San Diego Union-Tribune)

Rams-Chargers takeaways: Cam Akers continues to lead an improved running attack, but Baker Mayfield had a bad game in up-and-down tenure with Rams.

Ekeler got through the line and forced multiple missed tackles. Chargers takeaways: Defense is running hot; so is ground game (Los Angeles Times)

Chargers takeaways: The defense continued its string of dominant efforts, shutting the Rams offense down in a 31-10 victory for fourth consecutive win.

Overall, I thought that it was a great performance.” “It was a big lift for them, like, ‘We scored this thing, and that’s kind of off our back now,’ ” Staley said. “It takes a little while when you come from a different spot, just getting comfortable in the role and all that.” McCaffrey had 116 catches for the 2019 Carolina Panthers and 107 for the ’18 Panthers. To score a touchdown, a big red-area touchdown for us, it was a big moment for him.” The touchdown came on third and three from the six-yard line, Herbert hitting Gerald Everett. Football is football to him, but I think that he is getting comfortable.” After his touchdown catch, Parham kept the ball, later explaining that he would send it home to his family in Florida. it was a long time coming, for sure.” He won two Super Bowls with the Patriots. In the last five games, teams have converted only 13 of 53 third downs. 5 playoff seed in the AFC.
