March for any college basketball program good enough to be included means the NCAA tournament. March for this Notre Dame basketball team might mean something ...
Notre Dame has never rebounded from an 0-3 start in ACC play – or in any conference play – to make it to the NCAA tournament at season’s end. Early Friday evening, the Notre Dame football season ended. It's the old guys not being able to suck it up and tough it out and say to one another, we’re winning this one. The message? Down two, at home, in a gotta-have game, you figured the table was set for a hungry group of veteran Irish to eat. “You just gotta dig down, do the dirty work and pull it out,” Goodwin said. The know the league standings. Instead, it was the other guys who sensed the magnitude of the moment. It means it’s going to take an effort the likes of which haven’t been seen around these parts – no matter how much the head coach insists they have – just to get back to the NCAA tournament. Smart guys don’t turn the ball over a season-high 17 times. The smart guys aren’t playing like smart guys. They know that going 15-5 in the league last year was barely good enough to get back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2017.
Breaking down scoring drives in Friday's TaxSlayer Gator Bowl game between No. 21 Notre Dame and No. 19 South Carolina in Jacksonville, Fla.
Key to the Drive: Notre Dame stuck with hits run game, riding Audric Estime and Logan Diggs most of the drive. Key to the Drive: Notre Dame looked to be putting the game out of reach running the ball when Buchner attempted to hit TE Mitchell Evans on a slant pass that Fortune jumped in front of 2-yards deep in the end zone. It was Notre Dame's second one-play scoring drive of the game. He has seven catches for 78 yards, and the score pushes Rattler over 200 yards passing for the game. Gamecocks force two incompletions and sack Buchner on third down for the Red Zone hold. The 28 combined first quarter points scored sets a TaxSlayer Gator Bowl record.
Analysis of the Notre Dame offense from its 45-38 Gator Bowl win over South Carolina.
*** The Irish still had plenty of miscues in the second half. *** Notre Dame followed that up with another great drive, mixing up the run game and quick perimeter pass game to put another scoring drive together. The post route to Lenzy was on the first play of a series in which the Irish started the drive in SC territory, it was clearly an attempt to take a shot due to the good field position, knowing they were starting the drive on the verge of two-down territory. Rees tried a bit of a gimmick play that got Mitchell Evans the ball on an in cut out of a quads look. *** One of the biggest adjustments was starting to get outside more with the run game. *** Notre Dame was a different animal in the second half. Braden Lenzy outran two South Carolina defenders on a post route for a touchdown, Jayden Thomas got open on a deep corner route off of boot away action, and even the misses served to soften up the SC defense. Hitting Thomas in the flats on slides, hitting Diggs on a drag by dropping his arm down as he was getting hit to convert another third down, hitting Diggs by changing his arm angle. There weren't any big runs, but we saw counters that were designed to go outside (the touchdown run by Buchner), we saw a few stretch plays and they kept running the jets and quick throws. Notre Dame's line didn't get much early push and Logan Diggs didn't hit the holes with a lot of authority. Stepping up and hitting Evans on a seam to convert a 3rd-and-15. The Jet Sweep to Braden Lenzy was important, but they hit several boots and slides before the home run to Diggs that went for 75 yards.

Let it all hang out…again - South Carolina played loosely and let it all hang out in their two wins over Tennessee and Clemson, and they need to do the same this week. For that to happen, Rattler will need protection and time in the pocket and at least some semblance of the running game to keep the Irish defense honest. Build early momentum - South Carolina has been a different team this season when they have been able to start quickly and build confidence. have their work cut out for them when it comes to overcoming those losses, and they will need to show tremendous creativity on both sides of the ball to do so. Offensively, they will be without their top two running backs, a starting wide receiver, and their starting right tackle, and are down to only one scholarship tight end remaining on the roster. This article looks at five things the Gamecocks must do well to finish the season on a high note.

The final play was a 16-yard TD from Buchner to Mitchell Evans. Buchner used a play fake and Lenzy reeled in the deep ball to make it 31-31 with :31 seconds left in the third quarter. Buchner set up in the pocket and fired to the middle of the end zone and into the arms of O’Donnal Fortune, who bolted 100 yards in the opposite direction for the second pick-6 of the day for the Gamecocks. Diggs raced 39-yards three plays later to give the Irish their first lead of the game at 38-31. Buchner threw his second interception when he tried to shovel a pass to Thomas on 3rd and 4 on Notre Dame’s next drive. Diggs hit the sideline and raced 75 yards to the end zone on the only play of the drive. The Irish moved the ball just a yard on its first two plays and faced 3rd and 9 from the 15. The Buchner run made it a 24-24 game early in the third quarter. It was the sixth interception of the season for the Irish Freshman All-American cornerback. Buchner hit Logan Diggs on a short wheel to the quarterback’s right. The ensuing Notre Dame drive started slowly, as Buchner completed just one of his first five passes in the game. Xavier Legette scored from 13 yards out on another short pass from Rattler to complete a 10-play, 75-yard drive that took just 3:12 off the clock on the game’s opening drive.
South Carolina football lost 45-38 to Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl in disappointing fashion after a last-minute penalty cost them the final play.
The Irish ran all over South Carolina in the second half, logging 211 yards compared to just 54 in the first half. They also couldn't capitalize on a key interception by defensive lineman Nick Barrett in the third quarter, punting on a drive that started on the Notre Dame 46. The Irish mounted a comeback to tie it 24-24 early in the third quarter, but South Carolina reclaimed the lead thanks to a spectacular 42-yard touchdown catch by Xavier Legette. Not to be outdone, the Irish ran a fake of their own early in fourth quarter. The combined 28 points was a Gator Bowl record for points in a quarter, surpassing the previous mark of 24 set in 2011 by Michigan and Mississippi State.

The No. 14 Miami Hurricanes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish return to ACC play with a Friday afternoon battle in South Bend. Gameday Info: Tipoff: 2:00 p.m. ...
The fact that this team is nationally elite in terms of taking care of the ball and they still have a negative turnover margin is absurd. With the backcourt of Starling, Ryan, Dane Goodwin (11.2 ppg, 45.5 3P%) and Trey Wertz (10.0 ppg, 3.7 apg), Notre Dame was supposed to be able to have enough offensive prowess to make up for their limited length and athleticism on the other end of the floor. Miami is the second worst defensive rebounding team in the ACC (23.8 per game), so one way they can be exploited is on the glass. Brey has a skilled veteran group that returned the majority of key pieces from a team that won two games in the NCAA Tournament last season. Mike Brey’s team has been one of the biggest disappointments in the ACC this season. These teams are in similar boats with essentially seven man rotations and the heavy reliance on a single frontcourt player (Omier/Lazewski). I don’t expect Notre Dame to squander this season completely, but this won't be game where they turn things around. Wong is the frontrunner for ACC Player of the Year, and he’s averaging 26 points and 7.25 assists per game over his last four contests. Miami looks like one of the top few teams in the league, and I don’t see anyone on Notre Dame having success slowing down Isaiah Wong. This is their third road test of the season. Coach Jim Larrañaga is fielding a similar squad to the one that made a surprise Elite Eight run last season. This playmaking ability is a new aspect of his game — he averaged just two assists per game last season.

South Carolina football collapsed in the second half and lost 45-38 to Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl. Here's how we graded the performance.
Beamer got an unsportsmanlike conduct flag in the first half, and the aforementioned McDowell call could have cost the team the game. With the amount of missing starters, South Carolina's defense was impressive in that it was not a total disaster. Buchner scored two of the Irish's rushing touchdowns and was the team's No. Wide receiver Xavier Legette had the offensive play of the game, a spectacular 42-yard touchdown catch that he kept in bounds on a toe tap. The unit's biggest issue was penalties: A late unsportsmanlike conduct call on Juju McDowell cost the Gamecocks the chance to tie the game, and an intentional grounding call on the play before put the team into a third-and-long situation that it couldn't overcome. The offense reached the end zone just once in the second half and three times total.

You know, run the ball, run the ball, run the ball, and then a short-yardage situation…it’s a tough play for that defense, especially when you’re able to run the ball. I sit there and I challenge these guys every day to be relentless and aggressive and go after them and let loose. And getting the interception was a chance for us to to be aggressive, but it also wasn’t smart. Except the last steps when they thought we were going to run the ball and we didn’t. And they were able to go out and put it all together in that second half, and I think they only gave up seven points in the second half. And for a guy like Braden, just continue to do his job and run as hard as he can, and runs his routes to perfection, that’s an unselfish position. It’s right now because if you continue to just think about the future, you lose this opportunity to send these guys out the right way. And the way he finished off this season, his first year in having a chance to start, you know, and the ability to just really tune out all the noise and focus on his job. You expected to play a tough game because you knew that opponent was really good and that quarterback is special. And after we ran the punt, And all the days you can sit here before this game and daydream about how you think this game will go, it wasn’t like that. And this is a great way to finish off this 2022 season.
Analysis of the Notre Dame defense from its 45-38 Gator Bowl win over South Carolina.
The defense, as a whole, played a lot faster in the second half of the game. *** Notre Dame's tackling in the second half of the game was much, much better. The perimeter of the Irish defense did a great job against the quick perimeter runs and throws. *** Cornerback Clarence Lewis got caught looking back to the football instead of playing the receiver on the long touchdown pass he allowed in the third quarter. *** Safety Xavier Watts got beat on a 2nd-down slant on the first series, but later he had a crucial pass break up in the end zone. Notre Dame got more consistent pressure on the South Carolina quarterback in the second half, which kept Rattler from being as comfortable and accurate as he was in the first half. Notre Dame's front also got a good push against the South Carolina ground attack, which found very little running room in the final two quarters. Not just for the second half of this game, but also for next season. *** Many of the issues that plagued Notre Dame all season were evident again in the first half against South Carolina. Missed tackles, bad penalties, being out of position, getting no depth over the middle in the pass game and turning a tight end loose on a play-action pass from the wildcat alignment were the major first half mistakes by the Irish. The Notre Dame defense dominated in the second half, holding South Carolina to just 100 yards of total offense in the final two quarters. These types of mistakes by the linebackers were constant in the first half.

Tyler Buchner knew just the right video to encapsulate the Fighting Irish's roller coaster performance vs. the Gamecocks.
When it looked like Notre Dame was headed for another loss in a bowl game, Buchner delivered when it mattered most. In a game in which he became the only FBS player over the last 25 seasons with at least two passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and two pick sixes in a game, it truly was a “back from the dead” moment. The final touchdown lifted Notre Dame to its first bowl game win since the 2019 Camping World Bowl.

Notre Dame football is jam packed with history and amazing players, which got us thinking who the 5 greatest in the program's history are.
What is truly remarkable and I believe what shows how great he truly was, he is still the only player in the history of the sport to win the Heisman Trophy on a losing team. He is without question the greatest receiver in Notre Dame history, and that’s quite a list in and of itself. That season, he led the Irish in passing, rushing, kick returns, punt returns, scoring and punting. He was named an All-American in 1955 and won the 1956 Heisman Trophy. He quarterbacked the Fighting Irish to three national championships. He is arguably the greatest tw0-way player in college football history. It’s nearly impossible to tell the story of Notre Dame football without detailing Johnny Lujack’s exploits. Montana was deadly accurate with the football and led Notre Dame to one of the more improbable runs in the sports history. Brown finished his college career with just shy of 2,500 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns and was easily the team’s biggest threat all four of his years from 1984 through 1987. In 1977, Montana took over at QB after a loss to Ole Miss in Week 2 and never looked back, leading the Fighting Irish 10 straight wins, including beating #1 Texas for a national championship. They also have easily one of the largest fan bases, which is in part due to being on NBC every week for decades. The Fighting Irish are still one of the most successful programs in the sport.
The No. 21 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-4) capped off the 2022 season with a come-from-behind victory over the No. 19 South Carolina Gamecocks (8-5).
He not only made huge plays on offense, performing in a way where he could make his own case for being the player of the game there, Lenzy made the special teams play of the game. With the game tied 31-31 early in the fourth quarter, Lenzy was called on to execute a shovel pass on a fake punt. He caught three other passes for 69 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown pass and then converting a 3rd-and-7 on a well-executed slant route. The drive ended three plays later when Diggs raced 39 yards for a score. Backfield mate Audric Estime was arguably the most consistent back on the night, and he sparked the ground attack in the second half, but the big plays from Diggs were game changers. It was Botelho that sparked the second half pass rush that got Rattler completely out of his game. Botelho made a very good read early on a Spencer Rattler fake, bringing him down for a loss on the play. A 24-10 game in which the Irish were thoroughly being outplayed looked a lot different after that play, and despite a few costly mistakes the Irish regained and kept the momentum after the big play from Diggs. Botelho did his best Foskey impression, handling the edge in the run game and providing some very crucial pressures. By the end of the night Diggs had racked up 170 yards of offense and two huge touchdowns. Diggs turned the game completely around when he caught a quick slide pass from Tyler Buchner and then out ran the South Carolina defense on his way to a 75-yard touchdown. I did not like how Diggs ran early in the game, as he was a bit tentative and wasn't running with much authority.

Sophomore Lashae Dwyer, who scored 10 points in the game, notched seven straight points to put Miami ahead 53-51 towards the end of the third. The Fighting Irish shot the ball efficiently early on to gain a 21-13 lead after 10 minutes of play. The game came down to the final seconds, but Notre Dame escaped with a 66-63 win.

You know, run the ball, run the ball, run the ball, and then a short-yardage situation … Regardless of his role next year, Buchner can point to the Gator Bowl as the moment he flashed the potential Notre Dame saw in his recruiting process. Despite some queasy moments both early and late, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish wrapped up their 2022 season with a wild 45-38 win over the South Carolina.
The problem was that even though South Carolina finished with just two sacks, they delivered plenty of heat on Buchner in the opening quarter. The first came in the opening quarter, while the latter changed the momentum on a potential touchdown that would have meant a 14-point lead late in the game. That jolt seemed to wake the Irish up and allowed them to slice that margin in half by intermission at 24-17 in favor of the Gamecocks. Notre Dame began the game on defense and struggled to contain the potent South Carolina for much of the first two quarters. A disastrous first quarter in which the Notre Dame offense gained only 78 yards evolved into a final offensive output of 558 yards by the Irish. The Irish were five-point favorites in this Gator Bowl clash and struggled to get their footing against a high-powered South Carolina offense.

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer had plenty to say about Notre Dame following the Irish's Gator Bowl victory.
He made some big-time throws, and they certainly caught our young DBs in some plays that were tough on us, and he did a great job of capitalizing on it, as well. “They made the call, but that can’t happen. “It was just something that we had some options off that play and something that we felt good about going into the game. I can’t get us 15-yard penalties, and I told the team that at halftime.” “The group of guys that were on our sideline in the second half, awesome, professional and all that. They kind of did what they do, and we got beat out there on the perimeter a couple times on some perimeter plays, and just didn’t execute as well as we needed to.”

Notre Dame wide receiver Braden Lenzy announced he's finished with his football career one day after the Gator Bowl.
Injuries limited him to just three games played in 2020, and he played through the 2021 season with a nagging shoulder ailment. Lenzy caught 34 passes for 309 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2022 and had 74 receptions for 976 yards and 9 touchdowns in his career. It’s just great to see him get the opportunities to go make a play and make them today.” He was the Fighting Irish’s second-leading receiver in the game with 4 catches for 89 yards. One of my early issues was that the run game was still to A Gap centric, with Duo still being the focus. There was a game here and there, but through six games Notre Dame converted just 40% of its third down opportunities (32-80). Notre Dame finished the season ranked 13th nationally in third down offense. Moving forward, if Buchner can limit the turnovers, throw with more consistency and may more of the layups the Irish offense has a chance to be quite dynamic with him at the helm. One of the things I liked most about the game plan was how effectively Rees used all three of the running backs. Notre Dame worked early to get the ball outside, and if not for some unforced errors the early offense would have been more productive. At halftime, however, Rees and the offensive staff made adjustments and in the third and fourth quarter we saw a lot more inside-out variation. Against South Carolina we saw the playmaking brilliance that has some fans enamored with his potential, we saw the inconsistency that can frustrate coaches, and we saw the big mistakes that has turned some fans off of him. Three is the number of interceptions Buchner threw, two of those picks were returned for touchdowns, and the last was his completion percentage. Buchner averaged 15.5 yards per completion, which was the team's third best output of the season, trailing on his 17.7 against Ohio State and the 15.8 against Navy./ Notre Dame earned a hard-fought come-from-behind victory against South Carolina in the Gator Bowl. Here are my key takeaways from the Notre Dame offense in this game.
How many times do you win a game where you throw not one, but two pick sixes and give up a fake-field-goal touchdown? My guess is less than 1% of the time, ...
That said, Buchner chose - unlike his former teammate Drew Pyne - to remain at Notre Dame knowing they would be pursuing players of Hartman’s caliber in the transfer portal. The most notable, of course, was the inexplicable decision to pass the ball on first and goal with the lead in the fourth quarter, on a drive where the Irish had been physically bullying a fading Gamecocks defense. And now on December 31, it’s still the case that if Hartman does come to South Bend, he would and should be the heavy favorite to win the job. One worrying trend that could be observed all the way back to Marcus Freeman’s debut a year ago was a lack of in-game adjustments by the Irish coaching staff. There were moments of pure bliss as the Irish asserted their physical dominance on the ground in the second half, with Audric Estime bowling through Gamecock defenders and the Irish converting a ridiculous three-yard quarterback sneak for a first down. My guess is less than 1% of the time, in which case we all witnessed a deeply improbable event as the
