Michigan football safeties coach Jay Harbaugh breaks down the battle between the Wolverine secondary and the TCU pass game.
There’s gonna be a group effort if we’re going to have success.” So you’ve got to understand the situation, understand what they’re trying to get accomplished. They’re a team that loves to run the ball. I think that’s gonna be a huge, a huge part of it. “They create a lot of space, you’ve got to be great at tackling. “They’re all explosive, very, very well-balanced, they can all make big plays, and the quarterback in this scheme, it’s just a great match between the two of them to be able to put those guys in position to make plays,” Harbaugh told WolverinesWire.

I love the team atmosphere. Hardly anybody gets this kind of opportunity and it's the best of the best playing the best. I love the game. That will be on the back middle of the traditional winged helmet. Every question has been asked, every question answered and now it's time to go play the game and let it rip. Michigan is at its best when getting push off the line, racking up consistent intermediate gains from its backs, and then sneaking a receiver downfield in space for a quick shot. It's how the Wolverines were able to play so dominantly all season long, ranking 5th nationally with 243 rushing yards per game, 3rd overall with 5.6 yards per carry, and 2nd in the country with 38 rushing touchdowns total. Overall, TCU recorded six wins this season after being down by double digits in the second half. Michigan in the second half. Compare that with TCU after the half, which is plus-98. Free Press sports writers predict Michigan football's College Football Playoff semifinal game vs. TCU in the Fiesta Bowl:
To which the Wolverines quarterback said: that’s “beautiful” to hear. The Horned Frogs want to make McCarthy beat them. And in the end, we will see Edwards ripping off some long TD runs and Michigan will have a decisive victory. 2, Jim Harbaugh, Michigan shoot for No. Expect Michigan to handle the Horned Frogs and move on to the title game. [Back where he and Bo finished No. The Wolverines will start slow like all their games. The pick: Michigan 35, TCU 23. The loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 title game also proved the Horned Frogs aren’t ready for the biggest moments on the biggest stage. But TCU is suspect on defense and is no match for a complete and confident team like Michigan. U-M is as a second-half team. Their identity is a never-say-die team.
Michigan football has plenty of players who are capable of impacting the Fiesta Bowl in a big way. However, there are three that the game will ride on.
Loveland is more unknown, and if we get his best, it will go a long way for the Wolverines. If they rise to the occasion, the focus could shift to next week in the second half. For both teams, this is their biggest game of the year.

We now know what Michigan football will be wearing in the College Football Playoff semifinal.
Michigan football is designated as the home team as the 2-seed, with TCU being the 3-seed. The game will kick off at 2 p.m. While most fan thoughts are on how the team will play against TCU, another often wondered about topic is which uniform will the Wolverines wear?
The Wolverines carry their 13-0 record and Big Ten championship into a matchup against Texas Christian.
“The goal will be to try and get the momentum back in our favor, and keep it for as long as we can. And when we lose it, we’re going to try and get it back and see how long we can keep it. And while some of this might come as a surprise to those on the outside, Harbaugh, now in his eighth season in Ann Arbor, laid out the plan back in July. “Blake (Corum) and a couple of other guys, including myself, said it in January when we started workouts that we’re not going to get back to where we were and lose. The result confirmed as much, a 34-11 loss to Georgia, the eventual national champions, in the Orange Bowl. As the players later said, they were just happy to be in the playoff. “You’ve got to play good. This year, the matchup with TCU and its prolific offense, play-making quarterback Max Duggan and group of talented receivers appears favorable. He likes what he sees from this team, making him believe that this could be the year Michigan finally gets it done. “People go a lifetime without the opportunity like our team has,” Harbaugh said this week. “We love each other,” McCarthy, who won the starting job over incumbent Cade McNamara in Week 2, said. The unit ranks top-5 nationally in many of the key statistical categories without the household names or game-changing edge rusher.
“Michigan football, welcome to the college football playoff.” It was a sentence fans never thought they'd live to hear. Everyone is told football programs ...
The program of the recent past left in the implosion of the 2020 pandemic season, and the team of today has risen from the ashes of what once was and has been reborn anew. However, now it feels like it’s time for the boys in blue to reach immortality. Like the immortal bird in Greek mythology, the Michigan football program of the 2010s is dead. The doubts were erased, the critics silenced, and the believers intensified. The 2-4 season was the implosion of what once was the Michigan football program. Harbaugh and Michigan seemingly reborn and renewed turned back the clock in their football ways. The were many firsts for the Wolverines during the 2021 season. The Wolverines went back to the smashmouth, run-through-the-line 40 times a game and it paid off. Former athletic director Dave Brandon then brought in “Michigan Man,” Brady Hoke, who showed promise in 2011 leading the wolverines to an 11-2 season with wins over Ohio State and Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl. Instead, the immediate promise proved to be a mirage. Legendary coach Lloyd Carr left the program having lost 6 of the last 7 to the Buckeyes, a trend that wouldn’t change for another decade. Then, the so-called “Savior of Michigan football,” the true “Michigan Man,” Jim Harbaugh returned to Ann Arbor from his time in the NFL.

And remember, the questions and answers were all in good fun in advance of Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl matchup between TCU and Michigan (4:10 p.m. And some were completely lost. But how much do they know about the state of Michigan? -- The TCU football players have been studying the Michigan football team for weeks. Some players did OK. Some needed assistance.
Two years ago, nobody could have imagined Michigan football becoming a national title contender. But things change. Here's how it happened.
“It was our goal to make sure that was not the statement and that wasn’t the identity of Michigan football.” It seems rather fitting then that this next game will be held just outside Phoenix, a city named for the mythical bird that soared from the ashes just like Michigan did after it crashed and burned in 2020. The transformation has been dramatic, reinvigorating both the Wolverines and Harbaugh’s career. “You never want to feel that again ever in life,” Moore said. The statistical output revealed a malfunctioning offense too reliant on three-receiver sets at a program that was supposed to make its opponents surrender in the trenches. The ground game was featured again with multiple tight ends on the field supporting an offensive line built to maul everyone in front of them. After all, Moore is now architect of college football’s best blocking front — one that has carried Michigan to back-to-back conference rushing titles. In a season delayed, interrupted and eventually curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan crashed to a 2-4 record while suffering a series of embarrassing losses. He beamed a smile, reveled in the moment and praised his undefeated squad that is one step from competing for a national title. It was Harbaugh’s charge to fix it after absorbing a massive pay cut that halved his annual compensation. That was particularly true on defense, where new coordinator Mike Macdonald installed a layered scheme that came straight from the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Quarterback Dylan McCaffrey, who was vying for the starting role, suddenly left the team just as the Big Ten reinstated its schedule.

What the Michigan football defensive line coach has seen from TCU's run game and what the Wolverines need to do to stop it.
The run game for a pass-happy conference — they’re really committed to running and they do a great job.” “They’re committed to the run, they do a nice job, they got a big O-line, really good running back,” Elston said. While the Horned Frogs don’t have the most vaunted passing attack that Michigan has seen, oddly enough, TCU does have the best rush attack on a per-game basis that the Wolverines have seen.
TCU is led by Heisman Finalist Max Duggan. Duggan started the season as the backup but ended it a TCU legend. Having already declared for the NFL draft, this ...
Johnston has been one of the most talented WRs in the country this season, totaling 53 catches, for about 900 yards, and 6 TDs. Michigan’s experienced wide receivers Ronnie Bell and Cornelius Johnson have also been heating up recently, both getting TDs in the last 2 games. Miller has been one of the best RBs in the Big 12 rushing for over 1300 yards, and 17 TDs.
It's gameday for the 2022 Fiesta Bowl. Michigan football and take on TCU for a spot in the national title game. Here is how to watch and a betting preview.
The over/under is 57.5 points and the money line is -320 for Michigan and +255 for TCU. I have confidence that Michigan football will deliver. Yet, the Horned Frogs are going to be a huge challenge for Michigan football and are led by Heisman Trophy runner-up Max Duggan. [Mike Morris also told reporters he felt about 95 percent](https://gbmwolverine.com/2022/12/30/michigan-wolverines-news-key-injury-updates-kris-jenkins-return/) going into this matchup and getting the top pass rusher back is also a big deal for U-M, especially since pass protection isn’t necessarily a strong suit of the Horned Frogs. It’s going to be close though. It’s gameday for the 2022 Fiesta Bowl.
The 2022 College Football Playoff gets underway when the No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs take on the undefeated, No. 2 Michigan Wolverines in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Wolverines and Horned Frogs battle in a College Football Playoff game featuring contrasting styles.
In the biggest game of the season so far, the road game against arch-rival [Ohio State](https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/OHIOST/ohio-state-buckeyes/), McCarthy threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns. [Cade McNamara](/college-football/players/3121123/cade-mcnamara/) got the nod for the Wolverines, but McCarthy eventually got into the game in the second half. [Kansas State](https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/KSTATE/kansas-state-wildcats/) in the conference title game, but that loss didn't keep it out of the College Football Playoff. In this game, I think Michigan's experience and defense are able to win out, but TCU is able to hang around and take it down to the wire. He was one of Michigan's biggest stars in the team's win over Ohio State with seven total tackles and a pair of passes defended. This will be a fascinating game because the ways in which these two teams win are very different. [Michigan](https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/MICH/michigan-wolverines/) takes on No. 3 [TCU](https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/TCU/tcu-horned-frogs/) in the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday. McCarthy](/college-football/players/26695214/j-j-mccarthy/): McCarthy started last season's College Football Playoff matchup against Georgia on the bench. In Sonny Dykes' first season as coach of the Horned Frogs, being in the mix for the Big 12 championship would have been considered a win. The Wolverines defense has been rock-solid all season, but it will be tested by the high-powered Horned Frogs offense. At this time last season, the Wolverines were underdogs to the eventual national champion

No. 3 TCU got off to a roaring start in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl, making a dramatic statement in its first College Football Playoff appearance with a 14-0 lead ...
However, a six-game postseason losing streak -- with four of those losses coming by double digits -- becomes the next hurdle for Michigan's head coach and former quarterback to overcome when it comes to his fans' expectations. Michigan has not won a bowl game since 2015, and Harbaugh's bowl record as the Wolverines coach is now 1-6 with six straight losses after Saturday's defeat. The rumble was eerily similar to the pair of long runs he had in the second half against Ohio State, and it seemed to foreshadow the potential for Michigan's offense to continue its trend of riding an explosive ground game. Nearly everything positive for Michigan seemed to be offset by something negative in the first half, initially forecasting doom for the Wolverines. TCU has been doubted and talked about as illegitimate all season long despite proving, time and again, it is one of the best teams in the country. The first of those two scores, a 76-yard touchdown pass from Duggan to Quentin Johnston, gave TCU a 48-38 lead that appeared to be the nail in the coffin. Sonny Dykes took over a team that lost its footing as a Big 12 title contender and a roster that found itself on the outside looking in come bowl season. Dykes credits the players and their belief in one another as reasons why this team continues to win despite facing adversity. McCarthy got off the mat and led led two touchdown drives in the final 3 minutes of the third quarter, but another TCU touchdown came in between. McCarthy had one of the most electric performances of his career, throwing for 343 yards and, rushing for 52 yards and totaling three touchdowns. TCU led by as many as 18 points in the first half and took a 21-6 lead into halftime before that third quarter for the ages. Of course, the Johnston touchdown was not the final twist in this thriller.

The Wolverines are one of just two top-10 teams in both scoring offense and scoring defense. The showdown between the Wolverines and the Horned Frogs will also mark the first time the two programs have played in football, and you could not ask for higher stakes or a better setting for the series' first meeting.

A curious call, for sure. Touchdown, right? Roman Wilson got behind the TCU defense and made the catch as he fell on his backside at the goal line.

Michigan football saw its season end in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday in the Fiesta Bowl after a tough loss to TCU. Here are the gut reactions.
One team ran the ball in the red zone well and one team didn’t. Yet, TCU scored touchdowns in the red zone and was able to run the ball when it mattered. McCarthy was spectacular in the second half. He nearly brought Michigan back from the end. However, two empty trips inside the five-yard line and a blown call reversing a Roman Wilson touchdown will haunt Michigan football fans forever. Here are the gut reactions.

After doing everything right during the regular season, Michigan football did everything wrong in the College Football Playoff semifinal against TCU.
Twice, the Wolverines had the ball inside the TCU 5. And twice, the Wolverines walked away with nothing. Loveland was sacked for an 8-yard loss. But TCU had its way with Michigan, ripping off more than 240 yards and 7.1 yards per carry. Donovan Edwards ripped off a 54-yarder on the first play of the game. - The other surprise was TCU’s running game. Or maybe, the lack of Michigan’s run defense. 5 in fewest average yards per carry (2.9). - It was stunning how TCU shut down Michigan’s running game. But that was it. Clearly, whatever mojo Michigan had built after 13 games disappeared. Suddenly, Michigan quarterback J.J.
For the second year in a row, Michigan is bounced out of the College Football Playoff in the semifinals. The Wolverines found themselves down big early, but ...
But the sophomore played his heart out and tried to will Michigan into a comeback that came up short. Even with all the negative plays that occurred for the Wolverines, they had all the chances to win the game. The Wolverines failed to score once more inside the five and Jake Moody kicked a field goal. But what was worse was the Michigan run defense. The Horned Frogs ran for 263 yards on the ground and three scores against Michigan. But Michigan was careless with the ball on Saturday against TCU and the Wolverines lost 21 points because of that. The maize and blue had multiple runs go for negative yards with TCU defenders in the backfield. But the line appeared to meet its match on Saturday. McCarthy threw two pick-six interceptions and Kalel Mullings fumbled on the TCU one-yard line and cost Michigan seven possible points. Even with all of that going against Michigan, the Wolverines rallied. A Roman Wilson touchdown was called back after a review — it looked to have been a score — and then Mullings fumbled the play after. The Wolverines turned the ball over seven times all season.
