The Titans are expected to start Joshua Dobbs at quarterback in Thursday night's game against the Cowboys, a source confirmed to ESPN.

[Cleveland Browns](/nfl/team/_/name/cle/cleveland-browns) this season but didn't appear in a game. In addition, Pro Bowl running back [Derrick Henry](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3043078/derrick-henry), who was listed as doubtful, is inactive. I was with [Browns coach Kevin] Stefanski in Minnesota, so I can try to give some 'Spanish to English' to him a little bit. Coach Mike Vrabel's team is in the midst of a five-game losing streak. He has completed 10 of 17 pass attempts for 45 yards with an interception in those games. Cunningham was claimed off of waivers by the Titans last season. He finishes the season with four sacks, six tackles for a loss and nine quarterback hits. Dupree signed a five-year, $82.5 million deal with the Titans in 2021. The Titans are 1-2 in his starts despite Willis completing just 50.8% of his passes and having three passes intercepted. "As [Willis] continues to grow and mature, I think he'll see some things a little bit quicker," Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing said this week. The Titans officially placed Tannehill on injured reserve Thursday, meaning he will have to miss at least four games before he could return. This will be Dobbs' first NFL start.

The Titans cut the lead to 10-3 on a 37-yard field goal by kicker Randy Bullock with 1:04 left in the first half. "We went into this game trying to win this game – you've obviously seen the effort that we played with. The Titans return to action next weekend against the Jaguars in Jacksonville, on either January 7 or January 8. Both came in Tennessee territory, and they ended drives by the Cowboys. "It's a unique situation, and a wonderful opportunity that I really embraced and had a lot of fun with," Dobbs said after the game. The former University of Tennessee star kept the football for a souvenir following his touchdown, since it was his first career touchdown pass.

Dobbs Steps In, Pumps Up Passing Game (Sports Illustrated)

In his first career start, the sixth-year NFL veteran connected with multiple receivers for big gains in a loss to the Dallas Cowbys.

“It was good to get out there and get this opportunity because the next one is for all the marbles, man,” Dobbs said. “It’s little things situationally that I’m aware of that I’d like to get better,” said Dobbs, a fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2017. To have that opportunity is one you never take for granted. I’m going to be excited to dive into the tape with the coaches, and continue to grow and improve as quickly as possible to give the team the best chance we have to win.” “Of course, that comes with reps, being out there and getting hit for the first time in a while. The victor in that game claims the AFC South title and a playoff berth, no matter what Jacksonville does this Sunday against Houston. That total would have been higher had Woods not dropped what should have been a mid-range completion in the first quarter. But Woods atoned later in the game, catching Dobbs’ first NFL touchdown pass – a seven-yard completion that cut Dallas’ lead to 17-13 in the third quarter. But the former University of Tennessee standout injected much-needed production and energy into the Titans’ aerial attack, finishing with 20 completions in 39 attempts for 232 yards and one touchdown – good for a 67.5 quarterback rating. “He played his game,” Woods said. A sixth-year pro making his first NFL start, Dobbs looked like a clear step up from Willis, a third-round pick in this year's draft. Just got to carry that momentum into next week.”

Tennessee signed Dobbs, 27, off the Lions' practice squad last week. This will be his first start of his NFL career.

Dobbs has also spent time with the [Jaguars](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/jaguars/) and [Browns](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/browns/). [Steelers](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/steelers/) drafted Dobbs in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Barring a miraculous stretch of healing for Ryan Tannehill’s ankle, Dobbs will be the guy to try to bring a third straight division title to Nashville. Willis went 14-of-23 passing for 99 yards, two interceptions, four sacks and one rushing touchdown during the Titans’ Week 16 loss to the [Texans](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/texans/). Dobbs has not pushed seriously to be an NFL starter, but right now, he projects as a better option than Willis, who was supposed to get a redshirt season when he was taken in the third round. Among all QBs who have started at least three games in a single season since 2000, none have averaged fewer pass completions per start (8.33) or passing yards per start (78) than Willis.

How QB Josh Dobbs came across decisive, confident in first NFL ... (The Tennessean)

Six years after being drafted, QB Josh Dobbs made his first NFL start for the Tennessee Titans Thursday. Here's what went well, and what didn't.

"It was good to get out there and get this opportunity because the next one is for all the marbles man," Dobbs said. Still, the Titans offense worked with Dobbs in, at least a little better than it had in previous weeks. Dobbs found him, threw to his stationary receiver and put the ball in a place to lead Woods into the end zone for Dobbs' first NFL touchdown pass. Vrabel said he'll need to evaluate the film of how Dobbs played before making decisions about if Dobbs or Willis starts next week versus the Jacksonville Jaguars (7-8) in a winner-takes-all postseason play-in game for the AFC South championship. When asked to evaluate his performance, Dobbs said he wants to clean up how he handles pressure. Vrabel made the decision to go with Dobbs over Willis early in the week. If there's one word that sums up what Dobbs gave to the Titans' offense, it's decisiveness. He never got the opportunity to test everything he'd learned, but he was learning. On his touchdown pass, a 7-yard pass to Robert Woods, the receiver was supposed to carry his route into the end zone. The former Tennessee Vols standout hadn't started a game since college in 2016, but with starter Ryan Tannehill on injured reserve and rookie Malik Willis struggling to produce, Titans coach Mike Vrabel gave Dobbs the reins to the offense Thursday just eight days after signing him off the Detroit Lions' practice squad. He completed 20 of his 39 attempts for 232 yards with a touchdown, an interception and a fumble lost. He compared the last six years to studying every day for an algebra test that never came.

"I think they're going to put whoever gives us the best opportunity to win out there, and I'll respect their decision. Instead, it was Dobbs [under center](https://www.nfl.com/news/titans-starting-qb-joshua-dobbs-vs-cowboys-on-thursday-night-football), giving life to a listless passing game. It's possible Vrabel could turn back to Willis, claiming the QB was sat Thursday along with other starters to keep him healthy. "We're excited about having Malik," the coach said. He did miss a few throws, looked skittish in the pocket early, tossed a pick and had another near-interception that "We're excited about some of the things that he has done. The quarterback moved the ball well after a wobbly start, hitting several field-stretching shots that were missing with Willis under center. "That's up to the coaches," Dobbs said. We'll kind of see where things are here in a couple of days. Dobbs completed 20 of 39 passes for 232 yards with one touchdown and an interception and a lost fumble. We gave ourselves a chance but then again we did too many things that hurt us." But I thought we competed.
