Raiders benching QB Derek Carr for final two games of 2022 ... (NFL.com)

The Las Vegas Raiders are benching quarterback Derek Carr for the final two games of the 2022 season, head coach Josh McDaniels announced Wednesday.

"Those aren't easy conversations, but that's the nature of the position," McDaniels said of Carr. A change of scenery might be in the cards for Carr, who will certainly attract at least a few interested suitors if made available. However, because of the small sample size provided by two games, the results likely won't determine whether Stidham is worthy of a shot at the starting job in Las Vegas in 2023. "We're not going to have Chandler (Jones) out there, we're not going to have Denzel (Perryman) out there, so we've dealt with this in other positions, obviously. The backup appeared in eight games between 2019 and 2020 with New England, completing 24 of 48 passes for 270 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions before following McDaniels to Las Vegas. This, and a knack for finding unlikely ways to lose games has led the Raiders to their current standing at 6-9. There's a lot to be sorted through once the season's over." The tale of the Raiders' offense has too often been one of an explosive first half, and a quiet final two quarters, with opposing defenses dedicating plenty of resources toward eliminating Adams and forcing Carr to produce with his other targets. "Talking to Derek -- who was great -- he understands the scenario that we're in and the situation. The deal was wisely structured, providing the Raiders a way out of the agreement thanks to a low 2023 dead cap number of $5.625 million if he is cut or traded within three days of Super Bowl LVII. "It's more about the opportunity," McDaniels explained. "None of us is happy with where we're at, but we think it's an opportunity to evaluate a younger player who hasn't had much time to play," McDaniels said.

Sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that the Raiders made this move in part to maintain Carr's health and keep their options open this offseason, including for a potential trade. Carr, who holds virtually every passing record in franchise history, had signed a three-year, $121.5 million contract extension in the spring, but he could be cut for a $5.625 million salary-cap hit if the move is made within three days of the Super Bowl.

The Saints haven’t been able to find a franchise quarterback after Drew Brees hung up his cleats, and making a move for Carr is exactly what we should expect them to do. The question is whether other teams choose to try and outbid them. Could Allen make a move for Carr in the months ahead and get them together in New Orleans? Jameis Winston is the only Saints quarterback under contract for 2023, but it feels like that ship has sailed and that it might only be a matter of time until they part ways with him. Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels announced Wednesday that quarterback Derek Carr has been benched for the remainder of the 2022 season, with Jarett Stidham planned to start in his place and Chase Garbers promoted to backup. He’s never led the league in interceptions (well, not until now, and others will surpass him after being benched) but he’s twice set the pace for fumbles (putting the ball on the ground 12 times in 2018 and 11 times in 2020).

Carr had incentives in his contract if he got injured, so with his performance and to avoid his getting hurt, Las Vegas has shut him down for the remainder of the regular season. The good news for the Raiders is that he does have an opt-out this offseason before his cap hit significantly jumps.

Sitting Carr eliminates the risk of him getting injured and the team being on the hook for $40.4 million over the next two years.

Carr was given a no-trade clause in exchange for agreeing to the out and would have to approve any trade destination. “There is a lot to be sorted once the season is over.” I’m not going to sit here and predict the future,” McDaniels said when asked about Carr’s future. It will only be the fourth game Carr has missed in nine seasons and the first not due to injury. But a more likely scenario is that the two sides agree to a trade to another team. His completion percentage of 60.8 and passer rating of 86.3 are his lowest since his rookie season and his 7.0 yards per attempt and 235 yards per game are his lowest since 2017.

End of a Raiders era? QB Derek Carr benched for rest of season. (The Washington Post)

After starting nearly every Raiders game for nine years, Carr will be replaced by Jarrett Stidham to end this season, Coach Josh McDaniels announced.

If the Raiders decide they want to trade Carr, a complicating factor could be his contract, which calls for him to be paid his 2023 salary of $32.9 million and another $7.5 million of his 2024 salary Feb. In talking to Derek — who was great — he understands the scenario that we’re in, and the situation, and is very supportive of the two young guys. “None of us is happy with where we’re at,” the coach added, “but we think it’s an opportunity to evaluate a younger player who hasn’t had much time to play. Another option could be for the Raiders to keep Carr at least one more year, possibly on a restructured contract. Over four NFL seasons and 11 appearances, he has completed 52.5 percent of his passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns, four interceptions and a 52.8 passer rating. Over the Raiders’ past four games, he completed just 53.4 percent of his passes, with six touchdowns, seven interceptions and a passer rating of 66.8. McDaniels’s familiarity with Stidham, 26, goes back to the former Auburn star’s selection by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. He will not practice with the Raiders, per reports, and his absence will be listed as “not injury related.” Right now, we’re going to get ready for the 49ers.” He immediately took over as their starter and proved a stalwart, starting 143 of a possible 146 games, including a first-round loss last season in the playoffs. Raiders bench Derek Carr: Answering questions on Vegas' QB future (ESPN)

Carr has been the face of the Raiders' franchise for nearly nine seasons, but does this move start the breakup process for him and the team?

Davis is more invested in the coach than the quarterback. And if Stidham plays well, then that would be a good problem to have in this scenario, no? [New England Patriots](/nfl/team/_/name/ne/new-england-patriots) this past offseason after being taken in the fourth round of the 2019 draft out of Auburn, where he had transferred after beginning his college career at Baylor. Critics have said Carr, who has thrown for 3,522 passing yards with 24 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions in 2022 while registering a 56.2 QBR, has not been the same since suffering a broken right ankle in the penultimate game of the 2016 season. Fans either loved him to the point of defending any sling or arrow cast in his direction, or loathed him to the point of blaming him for literally everything that went wrong in his nine seasons under center. One working theory has Brady, who is intimately familiar with McDaniels' system, having played for him for the better part of two decades in New England, coming to Las Vegas as a stopgap. Personnel-wise, McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler have to make a call on Pro Bowl running back He understands the scenario that we're in and the situation and is very supportive of the two young guys. So putting Carr in bubble wrap for the last two games at least keeps that guarantee-for-injury factor at bay. Even as McDaniels said there was no "finality" to the decision. And if Carr were to get injured in these last two games, his $32.9 million salary for next season and $7.5 million of his salary for 2024 would become guaranteed. "I am a Raider for my entire life.

Why Derek Carr and the Raiders are likely headed towards a divorce (SB Nation)

Carr wasn’t benched because he was bad—if he were truly bad he would be the backup, not completely inactive—but because in Davis’ eyes, he’s bad and expensive. When he was extended in April, he only gets $24.9 million in guarantees instead of the $121.5 million that gets written in tweets and jokes made about Carr. Carr has withstood the toughest of times with the Raiders. Was it when Josh McDaniels was hired as head coach, ushering in a new era of Raiders football that was supposed to mimic the Patriot Way? So, Davis brings in Patriot acolytes McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler, and lets them make the decision with Carr. Carr himself has posted career lows in yards per attempt and completion percentage while also having a career high interception rate.

Howe: Raiders should be locked in on Tom Brady with Derek Carr ... (The Athletic)

A Tom Brady-Josh McDaniels reunion? It almost makes too much sense.

Rodgers seems more likely to remain with the [Packers](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/packers/) if he decides to return, while Jackson is a candidate to get the franchise tag and stick with the [Ravens](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/ravens/). And beyond that, the Raiders aren’t going to stick McDaniels with an unknown commodity at quarterback in 2023 — not after weeks and weeks of questions The Raiders have a plan. If the Raiders aren’t sold on either or simply aren’t in position to draft one of them, Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker and Stanford’s Tanner McKee are projected to be Day 2 picks. With the possibility of having two picks in the top 40 — plus whatever they retrieve for Carr — they have a great opportunity to quickly reload where they’re lacking on the line and with their defense. They’ll also have somewhere around $60 million in cap space once they unload Carr, and Brady won’t demand to break the bank. [evaluating Jarrett Stidham](https://theathletic.com/4041750/2022/12/28/49ers-raiders-jarrett-stidham/) in his first two career starts, but there was an undeniable business decision to Carr’s demotion to third string. At this point, it’s not clear if that’s the case, as Brady has reached a point in his career when he The group looks lost and punchless, and the battered offensive line can take only so much of the blame. Carr has already left the team, with the Raiders’ approval, to avoid being a distraction, according to a league official with knowledge of the situation. A union between Brady and the Raiders makes far too much sense.

Derek Carr To Patriots? How QB Trade Or Signing Could Work (NESN.com)

If the Patriots wanted to acquire Derek Carr this offseason, here's how such a move involving the quarterback could work.

It’s even harder to envision the Patriots doing so in favor of trading for Carr and paying him a ton of money. So, the Raiders might have no choice but to release him. Plus, again, Carr might not be worth the total trade and financial compensation. Vegas only would be on the hook for a $5.6 million dead salary cap hit in 2023 so long as Carr is off the roster by June 1.
