Either way, the end goal remains the same: make it to the playoffs. That was pretty cool that it was his first game in a while now, and in his first drive, he goes down and scores a touchdown. When Rivera named Heinicke the quarterback once Wentz was ready to return, Wentz was the ultimate professional. Wentz also spoke to the media after the game, and he too praised Heinicke. I think that the fact we can learn from each other, talk through that and just be real and be honest. We control what we can and try and go play and be the best we can be. Heinicke also praised Wentz after the game. While Heinicke was upset, he was the first person to congratulate Wentz after his touchdown pass.

The Commanders don't have a comfortable option at quarterback. At this point, both Taylor Heinicke and Wentz seem like gambles.

He escaped the pass rush and made a highlight-reel flip pass to get started. He showed superior arm strength and an ability to jolt the offense out of an incremental slog. Now, Wentz may get the chance to show what he learned from that debacle. With the offense struggling and Heinicke lacking the skills to take on a heavier load, Rivera couldn’t resist flirting with the original plan. But Wentz did enough to turn the coach’s head. It doesn’t seem as if he is making an open-minded choice as much as he is verifying that turning back to Wentz is the proper risk. Then, in the middle of an otherwise efficient game, Heinicke committed two turnovers in a three-play span, which led to two field goals that increased the 49ers’ lead to 30-14. To end the game — and probably for the remainder of a season with a playoff berth at stake — they turned to Carson Wentz, the player making $28 million this season whom they traded multiple draft picks to acquire in March. They’ll have to settle for the erratic skill set of Wentz.
