How Will Japan Prepare for a Taiwan Contingency? (Nippon.com)

Recent events have seen the Chinese Communist Party concentrate power in the hands of a single person—General Secretary Xi Jinping.

Cyber defense is about protecting the safety and security of communications in cyberspace. In the 75 years since the end of WWII, the SDF has always been eager to update its equipment. In Japan, there is a strong argument that such organizations would violate the confidentiality of communications guaranteed by the Constitution. In particular, the SDF’s shortage of ammunition is so severe that Japan could not sustain a commitment to warfighting in a Taiwan emergency. This should be the responsibility of the military, which is involved in signal intelligence collection and analysis daily. It is necessary to give the SDF authority to undertake such operations by revising the Unauthorized Computer Access Act and other legislation. Pacifism that does not allow for the protection of people is not true pacifism. It was an irresponsible defense posture that left most of the fighting up to the United States. The geopolitical environment in the Cold War, when the 1% of GDP defense spending cap was envisioned, is no longer relevant, and Japan’s defense strategy from that period is now outdated. The first is a prospective increase in defense spending. If the United States intervenes, China will lose, but the question is how much damage Japan and Taiwan as front-line states will suffer in the meantime. On the other hand, Xi loyalists, such as Li Qiang (former Shanghai Communist Party committee secretary) and Cai Qi (former mayor of Beijing and Beijing Party secretary), were promoted to the Politburo Standing Committee.

You Wenze, a spokesperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the NPC, on Saturday also voiced strong dissatisfaction with and firm opposition to the China-related content of the new US defense act. Xin said that after the passage of the defense bill, an "arms race" and "military conflicts" are more possible but the island is far from capable of having an arms race with the Chinese mainland. It is the bedrock of the political foundation of China-US relations, and a red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations," Wang said. This further indicates that some forces in the US are trying to support the "Taiwan independence" secessionists with arms in the military, provoking confrontation across the Taiwan Straits and pushing the two sides of the Straits to the brink of war, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, said in a statement on Saturday. In a resolute response to the recent escalation in the US-Taiwan collusion, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, a spokesperson of the PLA Eastern Theater Command, said in a statement on Sunday that the command troops will take any necessary measures to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Classical trash: how Taiwan's musical bin lorries transformed ... (The Guardian)

Army of yellow garbage trucks blasting out classical jingles brings out a Pavlovian response to take out bins.

The show climaxes with Kimmy dancing to an electronic remix of the A Maiden’s Prayer jingle. The “garbage doesn’t touch the ground” policy requires residents to bring trash directly out of their homes to the trucks, resulting in more hygienic streets in Taiwan’s sweaty climate. In the early 90s, only 70% of trash was collected at all, prompting a community activist campaign which led to today’s system. “But everything that happened is good.” How they were chosen is subject to a bit of folklore. Liou, however, says the trucks were bought from Germany and only played Für Elise. There are people who work harder than us.” In the last few decades, Taiwan has transformed itself from “garbage island” to one of the world’s best managers of household trash, and it’s done so with a soundtrack. The clip’s popularity was a clear sign of just how embedded the songs have become in the Taiwan psyche, as a point of fun and pride, even a class signifier. They and the surrounding neighbours are dressed casually, some in pyjamas and hair curlers, chatting or looking at their phones. “Whenever I hear the music, I always think that I need to hurry up to take out the garbage.” Chen can’t remember the first time she heard the jingle.
