On top of that, the Broncos’ defense surrendered 388 yards on the day in their 51-14 loss. More of the same issues crept up for the Broncos in the second half. Russell Wilson turned in one of the worst performances of his career on Christmas Day against the Rams. The Rams’ offense continued to impose their will, marching downfield on an 8-play 60-yard drive capped off by Akers’ third rushing touchdown of the afternoon, giving the Rams a 41-6 lead. The Broncos put up an abysmal 110 yards of offense in the first half, with Jerry Jeudy looking like the only bright spot offensively. Denver’s offense continued to go backward as Chase Edmonds was tackled for a loss of three yards, pinning the Broncos into a 2nd and 23 situation. Mayfield and the Rams’ offense trotted back onto the field after a hot 6-for-6, two-touchdown start from the Rams’ newly acquired quarterback. Mayfield connected with Higbee once again for his second touchdown of the game, capping off an 11-play 75-yard drive to extend Denver’s deficit to 24-3 early in the second quarter. Mayfield and the Rams’ offense capitalized quickly scoring two plays later with Akers punching it in from 3 yards out. In Sunday’s Christmas showdown with the Rams, Denver’s defense found itself up first against Baker Mayfield and the Rams’ offense. On their first drive, the Broncos’ defense faced an early uptempo approach by Sean McVay and the Rams’ offense. Russell Wilson’s return meant very little for the Broncos’ offense which struggled against an Aaron Donald-less Rams defense, while Denver’s defense struggled to stop Baker Mayfield, Tyler Higbee, and the Rams’ offense.

Baker Mayfield and Rams dominate in 51-14 win over Broncos (Los Angeles Times)

Baker Mayfield puts on a near-perfect performance and Cam Akers rushes for 118 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-14 win over the Denver Broncos.

Wagner, a former teammate of Wilson’s in Seattle, intercepted a pass on the second series to set up Akers’ first touchdown. Durant intercepted a pass on the first possession to set up Higbee’s first touchdown. The Rams sacked him six times. “And we knew if we performed well, we’re capable of doing a game like that.” Mayfield, though, has an opportunity to show other teams that he remains capable of starting in the NFL. Akers, a third-year pro, rushed for 118 yards in 23 carries and scored on runs of two, two and four yards. He completed 15 of 27 passes for 214 yards and touchdown, with three interceptions. Veteran tight end Tyler Higbee stepped up with a record-setting performance, and the defense intercepted four passes to make it easy on the offense. Frustration spills over for Broncos in humbling loss to Rams (The San Diego Union-Tribune)

The Denver Broncos' frustration over a disappointing season spilled onto the sideline and field in the 51-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Backup quarterback Brett Rypien got into a confrontation with the offensive line, and left guard Dalton Risner shoved him in response. Wilson is seemingly assured of sticking around to try and reverse those struggles with a five-year, $245 million contract extension he got in September. We got to change it, and, like I said, it starts with me and I’m gonna be the first one to make sure I do everything I can, that we can to change it.” The Broncos (4-11) didn’t expect to be in this position when the schedule came out in May — one that included a nationally televised spot on Christmas Day. And without any help from their offense, the Broncos’ defense finally buckled, allowing the Rams to score on eight straight possessions before they took a knee with six seconds to go. The Rams scored three plays later to go up 10-0.

The peak disappointment of the season might be this game. The biggest losers of 2022 could be Broncos Country. In the NFL, the key between winning and losing often comes down to turnovers. The Broncos certainly haven’t had a lot of bright spots throughout 2022, but this was a big one for Wilson. Instead, Wilson decided to throw the ball into double coverage, resulting in a pick in the end zone. Christmas day produced a lump of coal for the Denver Broncos, putting a bow on an already disappointing season.

[Randy Gregory](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3040479/randy-gregory) then put the exclamation on it all when he threw a punch in the postgame walk-off. Sunday was just the second time Gregory had played since he suffered the injury in Week 4. Aboushi responded with a punch of his own before they were separated. "After that second one, we took him out -- that's unacceptable," Hackett said. The Rams turned each of those into touchdowns, so after their opening field goal drive, they had a 17-0 lead after the Broncos had run all of five plays. 1, I've got to play to the standards that I know how to play to, that I've been playing to my whole career. Three observations from the Broncos debacle against the Rams (104.3 The Fan)

Russell Wilson tried to be a hero, the Broncos couldn't cover a tight end and Rams ground game wore Denver down in a messy game.

For the Broncos to give themselves the best chance to win, they needed to stop Akers first and foremost. He continually shows that we knew we had to stop him and we did it. We went in there saying we were going to not turn the ball over and stop the run. He made things look easy against the Broncos, no matter who was covering him – and the Broncos did try a couple of different formulas but to no avail. In the end, we want to be aggressive, but we can’t be overly aggressive. And they kept continually fighting, but we got to be able to stop it. Nothing worked, and the Rams kept going back to the well – which is just smart football. We went in with this mindset that we were going to be able to win this game, but in the end we weren’t ready. The Rams were able to beat the Broncos with ease, and they ended up scoring on most every offensive drive they had (they kneeled to run out the clock at the end of the game). We didn’t do the things that we were looking to do. Wilson is not running the offense, but instead trying to freelance with disastrous results. The Rams scored 17 points in the first quarter, and they scored four straight touchdowns for the first time in head coach Sean McVay’s tenure.

“We've got to take our frustrations out on the field the right way.” The beleaguered Wilson was not sharp in his return from a one-game absence with a concussion, throwing interceptions to end Denver’s first two drives. The Rams' pressure on Wilson improbably was led by Murchison, who signed with Los Angeles 13 days ago after Tennessee cut him. Tempers eventually cooled on a rough day for Gregory, who got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after LA’s third touchdown and later extended another Rams TD drive with a roughing-the-passer penalty. They subsequently scored touchdowns on four consecutive drives for the first time in McVay's tenure. Akers then scored two snaps after Wagner made a long return of his interception across the middle.
