The Vikings are 18th in the league in run defense, allowing 120.4 yards per game. It is noteworthy that the Vikings will be without their starting center, Garrett Bradberry, out with a back issue. The Vikings prefer to throw it and are just 28th in the NFL in rushing offense at 95.4 yards per game. It is no coincidence that Lawrence had a quiet game in Week 14 against the Eagles when Williams was out with a neck injury. The Giants are sixth in rushing offense at 146.2 yards per game. Did that drain the Vikings or energize them? When the Vikings are rolling and the joint gets jumping and the crowd starts chanting “Skol,’’ this is a tough place to play for the road team. No wonder the Vikings are 7-1 at home this season. For comparison, the Chiefs lead the NFL with 62. Forcing turnovers from Kirk Cousins and Saquon Barkley running wild is the combination required to pull off the upset. “I’d say just every game is just different as far as how you want to attack a defense,’’ offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said. This defense is 30th in the league, allowing 150.4 yards per game and showing an inability to contain any and all rushing attacks.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins had a hard time believing his team set the NFL comeback record after being down 33 points and beating ...

For all the mistakes the Vikings made in the first half to fall behind by so much, O’Connell had his best play-caller hat on after halftime. Two possessions later, Justin Jefferson drew an unnecessary roughness penalty on safety Rodney Thomas during a reception for a first down that moved the ball from the Colts 48 to the 33. Like most of the league’s top offenses, he had five dangerous receivers to throw to on just about every play down the stretch with Jefferson, Osborn, Adam Thielen, tight end T.J. Three plays later, they scored to close the gap to 36-28. The receivers are more likely to draw a flag for pass interference or a hard, high hit than the guys covering them on the other side. But Odeyingbo briefly stood over Reagor in an intimidating manner that was whistled for a 15-yard taunting penalty, one of the NFL’s recent emphases on sportsmanship. Osborn for a 63-yard pass that set up the first touchdown. The NFL has had 44 games this season with a team trailing by 10 points or more that wins or ties, including four instances by the Vikings. Dayo Odeyingbo tackled Jalen Reagor for a 5-yard loss on a jet sweep that would’ve given the Vikings second-and-15 from their own 20 with nearly 5 minutes elapsed in the third quarter. There might not be as much mystery around Minnesota’s version once the next generation gets up to speed on the game. The best quarterbacks are continually advancing athletically and strategically, and these biggest stars of the sport have enjoyed increased protection for years with defensive players more strictly penalized for their endangerment. Giants at Vikings: Stats and analytics from the Giants' 27-24 loss (Big Blue View)

The New York Giants couldn't quite complete the underdog win over the Minnesota Vikings on the road Saturday afternoon. This was an exciting, hard-fought ...

However, we should credit the defense for doing as much as they did to hold a good Vikings’ offense in check. There’s a pretty good argument that they wouldn’t have been in position to win this week without the play of their defense, either. Going for it was an absolutely easy decision, as the Giants were down by eight points and a field goal would likely have been the same a surrender. Cousins was also forced to rely on shorter throws than he has throughout the season. Of course, whether attempting a deep shot was the right way to go about going for it is another matter entirely. After the blocked punt, however, Minnesota had an 80 percent chance of winning — a 12-point swing on what should have been a routine play. Those two plays stopped the Giants’ offense cold and were responsible for big swings in the flow of the game. Fortunately, the Giants’ defense picked up the offense and those two turnovers only amounted to three points for the Vikings. The Vikings failed to convert on that play after Adam Thielen ran the wrong route and pulled coverage toward Justin Jefferson and constricted the catch window. Of course, his very next play was a 17-yard pass to Justin Jefferson that got most of that lost win probability back. This felt like a much closer game than the chart would suggest, largely because it factors in that the Vikings were favored by 4.5 points at the start of the game. That kick was worth 35 points in win probability, and all Joseph had to do was shatter his previous career long by five yards with the pressure at its absolute highest.
