What does Alex Ovechkin have to do to pass Wayne Gretzky in all ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Alex Ovechkin has moved into sole possession of second on the NHL's all-time goals list, so what is his path from here to first? It's entirely within his ...

NHL teams combined to average 6.28 goals per game last season -- the highest rate of Ovechkin's career. Whatever Ovechkin finishes with in April, when the 2023-24 season begins he will be a 38-year-old player with three years left on his contract. Would back-to-back 50-goal seasons at age 39 and 40 be out of the question? That was always the key to this chase: Ovechkin was going to have to make up the ground on Gretzky late in his career. What if Ovechkin does hit his pace this season and winds up with 51 goals? It's likely Ovechkin will pass Gretzky eventually, and then become the only player to ever score 900 times in his NHL career. In 2017-18, when Ovechkin scored the 600th of his career, we noted he would need to average 36.875 goals per season through his age-40 year to eclipse Gretzky's 894 by one. How could anyone break this Gretzky record, given goals overall are down from that era, goalie equipment has expanded and team defence has become much more structured? And while Ovechkin's career has played out in an era when goal scoring has risen out of the depths of the Dead Puck, offence still pales compared to the high-flying '80s. But, really, it might be more reasonable to expect Ovechkin will outperform that average now. The Capitals have 46 games remaining this season and if we "conservatively" put him down for another 18 tallies, he'd finish 2022-23 with 820 career goals. This season, the now-37-year-old has scored 22 times in 36 games.

Alex Ovechkin: “You never thought like it was going to happen when you come to the league – you going to beat any Gordie Howe record or Wayne Gretzky record or any record. Still right now it’s time to spend time with the family. I want to say thanks to all my teammates who I play, coaches for the trust, for the opportunity to be out there in different situations. I was like, sooner or later it’s going to come.” I give it to Kuzy and he’s like I don’t want to take it. “Going to the bar right now,” Ovechkin said to media. I’m lucky enough to be able to stay healthy, be able to score so many goals. On the empty netter, you didn’t want to score it. It’s nice to be in this category of players and it’s pretty cool.” It’s a history moment. It’s pretty big.

In pursuit of Wayne Gretzky, Alex Ovechkin embarks on rare record ... (NBC Sports)

Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin's quest to pass Wayne Gretzky in goals will be a race unlike anything sports fans have seen in decades.

As the world watches on in disbelief, Ovechkin is just putting one foot in front of the other. The way he shoots the puck. The race is down to two, and the Great Eight is gaining fast. He has three years left on his contract with the No, Ovechkin is seeking the record for a feat in which every tally can swing a game in another direction. The way he scores. With all the different responsibility positions in football, there’s no all-encompassing NFL record that players on either side of the ball universally compete toward. The main goal of the sport is to put the puck in the net, and only Gretzky has done that more often than Ovechkin. LeBron James is set to provide a glimpse into the magnitude of Ovechkin’s quest, entering play Saturday just 667 points back of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most in NBA/ABA history. “You felt like, OK, maybe you’re going to play in the NHL, you’re going to be good and you’re going to try to do your best, but the whole situation happening right now, it’s a miracle. The only player left standing in front of him now is Wayne Gretzky, the signature name when it comes to hockey royalty. With 92 goals left to be scored before he can tie Gretzky’s record of 894, Ovechkin will need to put another couple Ovechkin-esque seasons to take over the No.
