Featuring no shortage of exciting flight scenes and some emotional but stoic male-on-male bonding, Top Gun: Maverick is maybe the perfect movie to put on while trying to muster conversation with your emotionally distant father this Christmas. The film is star Tom Cruise's highest-grossing film to date, no small accomplishment for an actor known for releasing blockbuster films. Maverick has spent his long-running career as a courageous test pilot, but when he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a special mission, he encounters a challenge: Lt.

But maybe down the road, when we have a little more perspective on [Top Gun: Maverick] we can ask: is there more to this story that’s worth telling?" "Tom’s off making two Mission: Impossible movies and Jerry [Bruckheimer] and I are collaborating on another movie [about Formula One] we’re hoping to shoot next year. The first film was a rite-of-passage story, a journey from boy to man. but they go back for the emotion," Kosinski said. It’s been a long wait for the Tom Cruise-starring sequel to hit streaming – Maverick hit cinemas way back in May. You have the relationship with Rooster, the realities of getting older, seeing a close friend pass away...
Lewis Pullman's quiet BOB is one of Top Gun: Maverick's most mysterious characters, with the Top Gun sequel never revealing his callsign's meaning.
[Rooster and Hangman’s rivalry](https://screenrant.com/top-gun-maverick-hangman-rooster-casting-rivalry) gets so much screen time in Top Gun: Maverick (along with Maverick’s own journey), the real meaning of BOB’s callsign is never revealed. Any answer that Top Gun: Maverick provided for the source of BOB’s callsign would be unlikely to recapture the fun of guessing the name’s meaning. The Top Gun sequel leaves Bob’s callsign origin unknown precisely because this fits the quiet, unassuming, and surprisingly accomplished Top Gun: Maverick hero better that way. [Top Gun: Maverick’s cleverest callsign, Phoenix](https://screenrant.com/top-gun-maverick-phoenix-call-sign-foreshadow/), doesn’t pay off until Monica Barbaro’s character survives a fiery crash. Meanwhile, Top Gun never explicitly answers whether Maverick or Iceman is more responsible for the death of Goose, and Top Gun: Maverick offers another mystery when it comes to a supporting star’s callsign. The callsigns in Top Gun: Maverick all serve a purpose.

It’s a testament to the performances at the center of it (Mescal’s compassionate weariness most of all) that the film manages to suggest so much without overstating its point. The difference here is that those moments are being engineered on purpose. Sometimes conversations wash over Sophie and threaten to drown Calum; growing up is seeing the full picture of their trip, and Aftersun is quietly devastating in its ability to capture that. Those father-son dynamics seem like they were supposed to anchor the movie in some reality, but all they do is drag Strange World down when it could’ve soared. He wants to show you a good time, and he will. Her second 2022 comedy is more of the R-rated variety, about a woman (Kristine Froseth) who starts an affair with her employer (Jon Bernthal). Or [jump out of a plane](https://www.polygon.com/23516948/mission-impossible-dead-reckoning-tom-cruise-stunt-i-cant-believe-this-man), if you’re Tom Cruise. One part Get Out, one part Ready or Not, and too few parts Dracula, The Invitation is a pastiche of infinitely better horror stories that it never measures up to. This time it’s in Greece, when a tech billionaire (Edward Norton) invites his friends for a party and one of them ends up dead. Glass Onion is a brighter, louder, more extroverted movie than the first Knives Out. The once upstart, non-IP genre piece is now a Netflix tentpole, released first in theaters and now available for streaming at home. Daniel Craig returns with a new ensemble cast in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, one of quite a few new movies landing on streaming services and VOD this week.
The Darkstar jet's Mach 10 test flight may be a thrilling sequence, but could Tom Cruise's Maverick really survive Top Gun: Maverick's opening scene?
In both instances, the Top Gun: Maverick creators opted to follow the lead of Top Gun and prioritize entertainment value over realism. An ejection pod that can decelerate at a relative speed to the Darkstar would decrease the likelihood of an immediate death, although it is worth noting that Top Gun: Maverick doesn’t explicitly state that an ejection capsule is present. It is worth noting that Top Gun: Maverick also never names the enemy nation where the movie’s central mission takes place, which is at least as unrealistic as the Mach 10 scene. The relative weight and density of air outside the craft would kill the pilot instantly. This makes many of the sequel’s flight sequences tense and effective, since the actors look like they are in real danger (and occasionally were, as evidenced by a scene where Miles Teller’s Rooster slips while the actor was strapped into a real G-force simulator). Top Gun and its sequel Top Gun: Maverick are not realistic movies.

Although the song didn't land on the shortlist for Best Original Song at this year's Academy Awards (the film's Oscar campaign opted to select "Hold My Hand" by Lady Gaga instead), it is an equally important track to the fabric of the film as the Kenny Loggins song was to the original.
