Mission: Impossible 7: Tom Cruise's 'Dead Reckoning' Plot, Date, Cast (Variety)

Tom Cruise's latest outing as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One' hits theaters in July 2023.

[reported by The Sun](https://www.the-sun.com/entertainment/1977533/tom-cruise-covid-rant-mission-impossible-2/), after Cruise saw two crew members standing too close to one another in front of a computer screen, he told the crew: “We are the gold standard. “Dead reckoning” is a navigational term, McQuarrie noted in an interview with [Empire magazine](https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/christopher-mcquarrie-explains-mission-impossible-dead-reckonings-title-and-what-it-means-for-ethan-hunt-exclusive/), where he explained the connection between the phrase and the plot. As the production pivoted locations, it also shut down approximately seven times, and the budget ballooned to $290 million, which far surpassed the $190 million spent on “Fallout.” “Dead Reckoning Part One” follows the events of “Fallout,” where Hunt and his IMF crew saved the world from a nuclear apocalypse amid a series of double-crosses, including a memorable turn from Henry Cavill (as CIA assassin August Walker). Joining the ensemble for “Mission: Impossible 8” are Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman and Janet McTeer. Also returning from “Fallout” are Vanessa Kirby — Alanna Mitsopolis, a black market arms dealer also known as the White Widow — and Frederick Schmidt, as her brother Zola. Then, McQuarrie took over the franchise with the fifth and sixth films, subtitled “Rogue Nation” and “Fallout,” respectively. Because Cruise wants to give the audience “that thrill” — and quite possibly a heart attack — the camera must be as close to him as can be. “Dead Reckoning Part Two,” as it will presumably be called, is currently filming and is scheduled for release on June 28, 2024. Before he backflipped out of an airplane, Cruise reminded viewers that he and filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie (who co-wrote “Maverick”) were hard at work on the “Mission: Impossible” movies in South Africa. The concepts of right and wrong, for everyone for centuries to come. “The other is putting a camera in a place where you can see where Tom is doing it — finding the right lens, the right platform, the right medium.

Cruise then goes back to the top of the cliff and jumps again, and again, and again. Even without filming, the ramp itself required months of time to be built by engineers and technicians, as parts of the ramp needed to be airlifted by helicopter to the top of the cliff in order to put it all together. Other than the ramp's construction, determining camera placement to get the best possible shots of the stunt was needed, and it required Cruise to perform even more practice jumps to figure out the best angles and drone placements. These practice runs were also essential to the technical preparation of the stunt, as a GPS attached to Cruise's body helped stunt coordinators anticipate the required speed and angle of Cruise's jump to best prepare when it was Each jump was leading Cruise to go off of the massive stunt ramp, and preparation required Cruise to complete over 13,000 separate motocross jumps before he was ready to practice off a larger ramp. This belief in the importance of real stunts and his belief in doing them himself has led to what Cruise and Paramount Pictures are calling "The Biggest Stunt in Cinema History."

Even two years ago, the cameras didn’t exist that would allow us to do what we are trying to do today,” McQuarrie added. Cruise trained intensely for the feat. I’ve been wanting to do it since I was a little kid.”

Tom Cruise Claims He Just Filmed the 'Biggest Stunt in Cinema ... (Military.com)

How does an actor and producer follow "Top Gun: Maverick," the biggest movie of his career and the most successful military movie of all time?

If this crazy motorcycle jump was the most impressive stunt in "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part I," there's no way the filmmakers would've leaked this much detail about it more than six months in advance of the release. Even with all that prep work, Cruise did six takes of the stunt on the movie's first day of filming. If you're Tom Cruise, that means taking more risks and pushing the envelope by filming stunts that are even more dangerous than what you delivered the last time around.
