Jaguars vs. Jets: Perfect Storm brewing for Thursday Night Football (Black & Teal)

The Jets have a very stingy defense and Jacksonville has a hot hand on offense with Trevor Lawrence finding his groove. Which team is going to come out on top ...

It’s not going to be the first time the Jaguars’ defense has seen teams spread them out and take advantage of spacing. The struggling Jets’ offense against the Jaguars’ opportunistic defense. The Jets’ defense against the red-hot Jaguar’s offense. The same can’t be said for the other side of the field and the nickel position. The Jet’s offense has struggled with Zach Wilson at quarterback and this week’s game should not be any different. The weather could potentially play a factor in how the game is played out. The Jaguars vs. He will have something to say whenever the coaching staff chooses to try to run Etienne up the middle. This is an area the Jags should be able to exploit, with the interior offensive line opening holes for running back Travis Etienne. The linebackers play well against the run but are susceptible in their coverage. Which team is going to come out on top of this one? Thursday night football has the Jags pinned against the New York Jets.

Weather to be a major factor as Jets take on Jaguars on Thursday ... (amNY)

The Jets will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium — and the weather forecast may play a major role in the game.

Thursday night’s game will be a major test for them. Allowing just 1,561 yards on the ground, the Jets have allowed just the 11th-most rushing yards of any team in the NFL. Heading into Week 16, the Jets are sitting at an even 7–7 record, and they’re going to need to string together a series of wins if they have any hope of making the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade.

Final analysis: The experts on Jaguars-Jets (jaguars.com)

JACKSONVILLE – Each week during the 2022 season, Jaguars "experts" – Tony Boselli, Frank Frangie, Jeff Lageman, Brent Martineau, John Oehser, Brian Sexton ...

- The Jaguars will win if: They hold onto the football and finish with valuable points at the end. - The Jets will win if: They create turnovers. If the Jaguars don't protect the ball, the Jets will make them pay – especially if the weather is a factor. The conditions and the Jets' defense figure to make it difficult for the Jaguars to pull away – and the Jaguars haven't been pulling away from opponents anyway. - The Jaguars will win if: Lawrence passes for over 250 yards. - The Jaguars will win if: They can maintain the focus that allowed them to prevail against the Cowboys. The Jaguars have scored 76 points in the last two games because of precision effectiveness and explosive in the passing game. This could be a line-of-scrimmage game and the Jets don't trust Wilson to win it on his own. - The Jaguars will win if: They get the balance from their offense like they did against the Cowboys last week. - The Jets will win: If their defense can dominate to give their offense plenty of possessions to find some rhythm. If the Jaguars win the turnover battle, they will win the game. And they must attack the Jaguars through the air, where the Jaguars have been vulnerable.

5 Questions with Gang Green Nation: Jaguars vs. Jets (Big Cat Country)

What is the Zach Wilson experience like for Jets fans? How is Robert Saleh doing as a head coach? What makes New York's defense so tough? MacGregor answers ...

The Jets have a deep and talented cadre of pass rushers, led by defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who arguably is having the best year of any defensive tackle in the NFL this season. In good weather I see this game as a tossup, with the Jets having a big advantage on defense and the Jaguars having a big advantage on offense as Trevor Lawrence quickly is developing into a top quarterback. MacGregor: What do the Jets do well offensively? Will New York cover, are you taking the over or the under and what is your final score prediction? What does the unit do well and who are the players to watch on that side of the ball? Star receivers are routinely limited against the Jets, and almost no quarterbacks have had a big day against the Jets all year. Do you believe this is the right staff to lead the team in the future? The only question is what can be done about the quarterback position going forward, and is continuing to invest in Zach Wilson giving the team the best chance of success? The three of them have combined to make passing against the Jets a difficult proposition. In the few games where the Jets clearly outclass their opponents, the Jets take care of business. The question is, what is the opportunity cost of continuing to try to develop Zach Wilson at this point, and is it more likely that a guy with Wilson’s track record in the NFL eventually pans out, or is it more likely the team can find a better solution at the position with other options through trades, free agency or the draft? What is the Zach Wilson experience like for Jets fans?

Ten things: Jaguars-Jets (jaguars.com)

Senior writer John Oehser's 10 things the Jaguars must do to beat the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football in Week 16.

The Jaguars struggled at times in the red zone early in the season with turnovers there costing them four games. The Jaguars have combined for 76 points in those two games, their highest-scoring two-game stretch since December 2017. The Jaguars need Etienne to be effective Thursday – and to get back to breaking a 20-yard run or two a game as he did much of the first part of the season. The Jets are too good defensively to give them the ball that often. The front must impact Wilson to get the multiple turnovers the Jaguars need. The Jets' pass rush isn't as dangerous as the Jaguars faced in a Week 15 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, but it's very good. That kept the Jaguars in good down-and-distance situations offensively. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence for the past six weeks has played like a franchise, elite quarterback – with 14 touchdowns and one interception in that span. The Jaguars allowed the Cowboys just one sack. The scenario is simple because they beat the Titans in Nashville, Tenn., in Week 14. The Jaguars enter their lone scheduled prime-time game of the season one game behind the AFC South-leading Tennessee Titans (7-7), who have lost four consecutive games after a 7-3 start. He has been efficient much of the time and magical quite a bit, too.

Jets can keep playoff dream alive by learning valuable lesson from ... (nj.com)

The New York Jets have taken a big step forward this season. But they haven't learned how to close out games, as their late-season swoon has shown.

“We’ve got to go back and find a way to recapture what we were doing in the first half of the season over the next stretch of games and hopefully extend it. Quick turnaround, but we’ve got to find a way to finish in the fourth quarter.” But if they don’t, they’ll have to wait until next year to show that they can win a playoff-type game in the clutch, because the final two games aren’t going to matter if the Jets don’t get the job done now. After the game in New England, the locker room was silent and angry after the Jets fell to the Patriots (for the 14th straight time) 10-3 on a last-second punt return for a touchdown. In past years the Jets would implode in different ways, messing up so spectacularly that the game was out of reach long before crunch time. It felt like a move that might save the Jets’ season, especially after the White-led Jets cruised to a victory over the Bears the next week. There was plenty of blame to go around when the Jets lost Week 13 in Minnesota, 27-22. Ultimately, two second-half turnovers proved too much — the most costly was running back Michael Carter’s fumble deep in Bills territory with about five minutes to go and the Jets trailing by 11. Had he played decent football against the Patriots in either of the first two matchups, the Jets would likely be sitting at 9-5 right now and having a completely different conversation. They were coming off their biggest win of the season: a home victory over the Super Bowl-contending Bills in which they erased a double-digit deficit lead against one of the best offenses in the league. [Jets](https://www.nj.com/jets/) have spent the last three months proving they’re good enough to play with any team in the NFL. 20 the Jets arrived at Gillette Stadium at 6-3, a team that was more likely to make the playoffs (and end their NFL-worst, 11-season drought) than to miss out.

Weather is set to affect Thursday's game between the Jets and Jaguars. Find out the latest updates on what to expect at MetLife Stadium.

Last season's matchup between the Patriots and Bills in Orchard Park, N.Y., had sustained winds of 25-35 mph and gusts as high as 50 mph. The National Weather Service is forecasting winds between 13 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. The chance of rain is 100 percent. One to two inches of rain is forecast for the area Thursday night, though that includes the overnight period. Here's the latest on the weather conditions MetLife Stadium will experience. Intense rainfall and wind gust up to 50 mph will be a threat with this band of rainfall.— NY NJ PA Weather (@nynjpaweather) It won't be a snow game, but we've seen more than a few examples of rain and/or wind impacting the outcome of a game. The National Weather Service's forecast has been mostly steady since Tuesday, though winds are projected to be slightly stronger according to the latest update. The question will be how severe the conditions will be. The Bears notched an upset of San Francisco as the conditions threw both offenses into chaos. Zach Wilson is more prone to errant passes, so a running game that was shut down by the Lions in Week 15 might be forced to play a larger role against Jacksonville. The Jaguars enter "Thursday Night Football" banking Trevor Lawrence's arm beating a stingy Jets defense.

That said, New York has faced a .541 strength of schedule to date, so this stretch should prove easier than the rest of their season so far. Jaguars 19, Jets 3: Jacksonville Continues Playoff Push By Rolling ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Jaguars are winners of each of their last three thanks to a Thursday Night Football victory over the Jets.

After just three first downs in seven drives by Wilson, the Jets recorded four on Steveler's first drive. Streveler then turned a 3rd-and-9 quarterback draw into a 10-yard gain as the Jaguars struggled to handle the mobile element of the Jets' offense. Jacksonville was forced to punt on the ensuing drive, but not without gaining three first downs and taking nearly five minutes off the clock first. Wilson went 7-of-14 for 78 yards in the first-half, which included an interception to Devin Lloyd on the final play of the half. Thanks to solid coverage from Darious Williams, who had several big plays throughout the night, the Jaguars got off the field without allowing points. Jacksonville extended this to a 13-3 lead the next time they got the ball, in large part due to a 36-yard catch-and-run by Engram that gave him the Jaguars' single-season record for catches by a tight end with 65. After forcing a Jets punt thanks to solid coverage downfield and pressure on Wilson, the Jaguars managed to get back into scoring range. Jacksonville drive the ball into Jets territory right before the end of the half to set up another Patterson field goal, but the 44-yard attempt was wide left in the wind and rain. Saleh pulled Wilson for backup quarterback Chris Streveler, who was promoted from the practice squad for Thursday's game. Jacksonville finally got going on the second drive, tying the game 3-3. Evan Engram also caught seven passes for 113 yards to lead the offense. The fumble was Lawrence's eighth of the season.

On fourth-and-4, Streveler completed a 4-yard pass to Garrett Wilson and he led the Jets to the Jaguars 13. Streveler, who went 10 of 15 for 90 yards, became a fan favorite during the summer when he led the Jets to three fourth-quarter comeback victories in the preseason. But then, the Jets instead put Streveler in at quarterback -- and the fans went wild. While boos rained down throughout the first half, the poncho-clad crowd really let New York -- and Wilson -- have it when he was intercepted by Devin Lloyd on a Hail Mary just before halftime. Lawrence jumped over the pile for a 1-yard go-ahead touchdown early in the second quarter to cap an impressive 16-play, 96-yard drive. While Lawrence sliced through the Jets' normally strong defense, Wilson couldn't get anything going and was booed frequently -- all the way to the bench. It was Williams' career-high 12th sack and Lawrence's eighth lost fumble, tops in the NFL. It was Jacksonville's first scoring drive of 95 yards or more since 2018. Jacksonville would win the division title with victories in its final two games - including the season finale against the Titans. That's the worst skid under second-year coach Robert Saleh. Carl Lawson recovered to put New York at Jacksonville's 16. 1 and Wilson No.

Quick thoughts: Jaguars 19, Jets 3 (jaguars.com)

Senior writer John Oehser and senior correspondent Brian Sexton offer quick thoughts on the Jaguars' 19-3 victory over the New York Jets in a 2022 Week 16 ...

They won a game on Thursday they needed to win on the road in a big, loud, playoff-like atmosphere on a short week – and the outcome was in doubt for only a matter of minutes. Which figures, since every game is essentially a playoff game the rest of the way. It was a big part of the game. If the plan had been to launch the ball down the field and throw it 45 times, I have zero doubt he would have entirely overshadowed Zach Wilson in that regard also. Remember: If the Jaguars win at Houston next week and at home against Tennessee in Week 18, they win the AFC South. Don't let the way it looked fool you: The Jaguars dominated the Jets, and I would wager that if the weather was no factor they would have won 31-3. And maybe the most impressive part of the victory was the Jaguars overcame an early lost fumble and a three-point deficit to take control of the game quickly and secure what they haven't had since September – a comparatively "comfortable" victory. Another was that the Jaguars won on the road on a short week in difficult conditions. The Jaguars scored just one touchdown Thursday, and spent much of the game draining the clock and protecting the ball against a dangerous Jets defense. I love the momentum and the energy we have right now." But there was beauty in this performance for the Jaguars, particularly in a game-defining drive in the first half that ranks among the Jaguars' best possessions of the season. One was the quality of the Jets' defense.

Jets' Zach Wilson era is over after loss to Jags, no matter what ... (The Athletic)

Benching Wilson for Chris Streveler was the point of no return for a franchise that has not gotten what it needs from the 2021 No. 2 pick.

The Jets lost to the Jaguars for a lot of reasons, not only Wilson. Some in the Jets organization — namely Saleh, LaFleur and general manager Joe Douglas — will have to reckon with how badly their decision to draft him in 2021 has turned out. I’ve got to go back and I’ve got to go back and watch this tape. Streveler played the final three drives to end the game, long enough that he admitted the Jets expanded his play-set beyond the initial plan. The moment Robert Saleh benched him for a practice squad player on Thursday night, the coach gave up on any hope that Wilson might become the quarterback the Jets need. In your life, you’re going to have the ups and downs. “As a human, you’re going to have adversity. Saleh said Streveler was inserted into the game simply to provide a “spark” for the running game, insisting that the move wasn’t based on Wilson’s performance, that he wasn’t benched. Wilson is the face of that collapse. He completed a 30-yard pass to

On the Jaguars third offensive play, Williams, named a Pro Bowler for the first time, ripped down Lawrence from behind for his 12th sack of season.

Jets' Robert Saleh Stands By Zach Wilson, Explaining Why QB Was ... (Sports Illustrated)

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh stood by QB Zach Wilson after a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, a game where Wilson was benched for Chris Streveler.

We've got to find ways to help him, we've got to find ways to protect better, we've got to find better ways to run better, we've got to find better ways to call the game better. "Obviously we've got to go show it on the football field. Once he entered the game and started moving the offense down the field—making plays with his legs and arm—Saleh decided to keep him in and leave Wilson on the sidelines. Either way, it wasn't close to good enough today." It's the second time this year Wilson has been benched at quarterback—the BYU product recently sat for three games, watching Mike White carry this team's offense to new heights before he suffered a scary rib injury against the Bills. The Jets would be sitting pretty in the postseason picture this month if they had received better quarterback play this season. Jacksonville entered play with the 24th-ranked defense in the NFL, one of the worst units in football at stopping the pass. The optics of choosing Streveler over Wilson aren't great. The Jets' offensive line was as flimsy as ever against Jacksonville and the run game was nonexistent once again. We just wanted to give him an opportunity to finish that drive. Both position groups on offense have been struggling late in the season due to injuries and certain players underperforming. Sure, Saleh was critical, but the head coach also assured that he still has faith in Wilson.

Five key plays: Jaguars 19, Jets 3 (jaguars.com)

Senior writer John Oehser examines five key plays from the Jaguars' 19-3 victory over the New York Jets in a 2022 Week 16 game at MetLife Stadium in East ...

The rain and a strong, ball control offense by the Jaguars prevented many big plays in the first half – and as much as anything, the first half was defined by one of the Jaguars' most impressive defensive stretches of the season. The Jaguars converted three first downs on the ensuing drive to drain nearly five minutes from the clock before the Jaguars punted with 5:48 remaining. Jaguars linebacker Foye Oluokun forced a fumble by Wilson on the ensuing series that cornerback Tre Herndon recovered to give the Jaguars a first down at the Jets 24 with 4:10 remaining to set up Patterson's final field goal. Lawrence capped the drive with a one-yard dive over the middle of the line to give the Jaguars a 10-3 lead with 11:26 remaining in the second quarter. Starting on their four-yard line after a Jets punt, the Jaguars used 16 plays and 8:15 to drive 96 yards over the end of the first and start of the second quarters. It's a relentless group and a resilient group and I thought they played well in the absence of Foley and Travon." With Streveler running for 37 yards and throwing for 41 yards, the Jets moved to the Jaguars 12. It was good to come back and make the next two." The Jaguars' defense forced punts on the three drives after the opening field goal and linebacker Devin Lloyd intercepted Wilson on the final play of the half. But the defense held them to the three points – and no points after that. The Jaguars held the Jets, with safety Andre Cisco blitzing and sacking Jets quarterback Zach Wilson on third-and-five from the Jaguars 11. The Jets entered Thursday as one of the NFL's best defenses, and the unit made the game's first big play when defensive tackle Quinnen Willams overpowered Jaguars guard Tyler Shatley on third-and-six from the Jaguars 29 on the game's first series.

Jets' offensive line struggles in all facets of the game (New York Post)

The focus for the Jets' offensive woes will be on Zach Wilson after Thursday night's 19-3 loss to the Jaguars, but the O-line can't get away unscathed.

That is the seventh-most sacks in franchise history, tied with Muhammad Wilkerson’s total in 2015. The Jets were failing to stop their pass rushers and the Jaguars were missing two defensive linemen. Williams registered his 12th sack of the season on the first series of the night. The Jets have a backup at right guard in Nate Herbig. The Jets had just four rushing yards in the first half, their lowest total in 20 years. Wilson was sacked three times and the Jaguars were throwing the kitchen sink at the line.

With 3:31 left in the third quarter, Wilson walked from the sideline to the huddle and heard resounding boos he walked onto the field. And when Wilson led the Jets to back-to-back three-and-outs to start the second half as Jags took extended their lead to 16-3, it reached a breaking point. “You’d be remiss if you didn’t try to acknowledge the fact that there is a confidence thing there because when people are confident, they can conquer the world. And certainly not on Thursday night, when Wilson (who was back in the starting lineup only because White wasn’t cleared to play because of his fractured ribs) struggled from the moment he stepped on the field. “As a human, you’re going to have adversity. “As a man, you’re going to have adversity,” Saleh said. “Streveler came in and ran a couple of plays and sparked the offense. “You have to look at it from a team perspective, right?” Wilson said. When Wilson threw an interception on a desperation heave just before halftime, the stands erupted once again.

Can this NY Jets season truly be labeled a disappointment? (Jets X-Factor)

It took the Jets seven weeks to switch their dreams from the division title to seeing Chris Streveler. But it'd be wrong to deny progress.

Even the most optimistic Jets fan would’ve had trouble forging a spot on the AFC playoff bracket at the start of the season. but that’s the ultimate Festivus miracle of all, isn’t it? primarily the 16-play, 96-yard trek that yielded the Jaguars’ lone six-pointer of the day, a punch-in from Lawrence himself … Sure, some of the names changed (preseason contenders like Denver and Las Vegas are undoubtedly on the naughty list). But the Jets are far from a conventional franchise, if only because the bar is just above the entrance to the gridiron netherworld. Sure, teal-branded top choice Trevor Lawrence has the makings of a problem for not only the Jets but the rest of the AFC, one that amassed 280 total yards of offense in a 19-3 win. Heck, the Jets’ blue MetLife Stadium co-tenants are doing the same thing and are inches away from a playoff berth. You know the Jets have made progress when the rookie cornerback gives up a mere 20 yards in coverage against arguably the hottest quarterback in football … If anything, the Jets’ Thursday outing was a microcosm of the year that’s been, one that defined the triumphs and heartbreaks of the 2022 campaign. Everything that has transpired in green metropolitan football since Marcus Jones’ heartbreaking runback to glory in Foxboro reeks of “Same Old Jets” shenanigans, ones that take on inflated notoriety because of their connection to Gang Green. On the other side, the Zach Wilson era came to an unofficial end, the lauded second choice officially killing any goodwill he had left with the MetLife Stadium faithful with a 9-of-18 showing that amassed only 92 yards. It’s perhaps a downright Festivus miracle that Thursday’s game between the historically downtrodden Jets and Jaguars franchises carried significant postseason weight for both sides.

Jaguars 19, Jets 3: 5 Observations on Key Thursday Night Win (Sports Illustrated)

The Jaguars are rolling after Week 16, riding a three-game winning streak into a potential playoff spot after their 19-3 win over the Jets on Thursday Night ...

Now, we get some time to heal up and try to get healthy in the next four to five days." Caldwell and the Jaguars' suffocated the entire Jets' offense to the point where the Jaguars even expected a quarterback change at halftime. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that Smoot's injury appears to be a torn Achilles, which is a significant blow considering he is second on the team in pressures, fourth in quarterback hits, first in sacks, and second in pass-rush win rate. He’s a really good teammate to have and leader of the team." Wilson was putrid, but the Jaguars also had a good game-plan for him in terms of their pressure looks to force him into mistakes. We were going to have to run the football because throwing it was going to be hard. The Jaguars had a 16-play, 96-yard touchdown drive against a top-10 defense in bad weather, in large part due to Pederson scheming the Jets up. "Sometimes you just never know who is going to get the ball. The Jaguars also seemed to make an excessive point to run the ball, with Travis Etienne nearly recording 20 carries in the first-half alone. Still, it was staggering to see the difference in each quarterback last night. But on Sunday, we saw one quarterback clearly energize his team and make tough plays in an ugly-weather road win, while the other didn't look capable of completing a forward pass consistently. "It was going to be physical.

It didn’t work out, and Maccagnan was gone. It didn’t work out, and Idzik eventually was gone. While he was gone for a few years during a foray into international politics, the truly common thread among the failures of Sanchez, Smith, Darnold, and Wilson is Woody. There’s a chapter in Playmakers devoted to the importance of the coach and G.M. And Saleh currently can make a much more persuasive argument than Douglas as to the fact that the quarterback drafted by Wilson isn’t the answer. It didn’t work out, and Tannenbaum eventually was gone.

Ryan Fitzpatrick thinks Zach Wilson's Jets career is over (Elite Sports NY)

The former NFL quarterback and current Thursday Night Football analyst believes Zach Wilson's tenure in Florham Park is done.

Because he’s proven time and time again he’s the main issue. They have a competent and intelligent general manager who’s overseen the entire rebuild. A dominant performance and victory would’ve put the warranted Wilson criticism to bed, at least for the time being. They don’t believe in the kid. He completed just nine of 18 passes for 92 yards, one interception, and a 41.9 rating in a 19-3 loss. The struggling young quarterback had a great opportunity Thursday night against the Jaguars to prove he can be the franchise’s long-term starter.

So surely there’s a team out there that would be intrigued at the idea of bringing Wilson in as a backup and developing him. Either way, there is no path forward where the Jets can look at Wilson as a real option for 2023. Many around the league still marvel at Wilson’s arm talent, even if the rest of his game and mechanics are a mess. — so it’s not as if there would be no interest at all in him. The Jets only really have two options with Wilson this offseason. Wilson was benched earlier this season and replaced by White who suffered an injury to his ribs in Week 14.

The Jets should start Zach Wilson at quarterback for the final two games of the season — even if Mike White is medically cleared to play with his cracked ribs.

The only way Saleh and the Jets will find that out is by playing Wilson the final two games. Wilson is the player they need to make the most definitive decision on. I don’t know that I’d have the same take if the next game was at home, because Jets fans are done with Wilson, and it has gotten to the point at which he’s booed during pregame warm-ups. “You got to think about the player and where he’s at and whether or not you’re doing more damage or you’re helping him,” Saleh said. unless Saleh and the Jets believe they know enough and have seen enough.
