Yankees Make Aaron Judge Team Captain (The New York Times)

At a news conference to finalize his $360 million contract, Judge was given a position previously held by Lou Gehrig, Derek Jeter and other team greats.

“This is another example of the Steinbrenner family stepping up to retain a great player in Aaron Judge, as well as a great player wanting to be here and stay here. “It is a rare occurrence to be in a position to sign, draft, develop and ultimately retain a player throughout his entire career,” Cashman said. “It was apparent to me that the ninth year was very important to him,” Steinbrenner said, recalling a 3 a.m. “I look back at the list of Thurman Munson, Lou Gehrig, Ron Guidry, Willie Randolph, Derek Jeter, Don Mattingly; that’s a pretty good list right there. “I don’t really look at it as a new role. I know there’s probably going to be a couple more responsibilities with this, but I’m here to embrace every single obstacle and continue to lead this team and lead this city to not one but multiple championships down the road.” Judge, meanwhile, discussed a desire to play into his 40s, and to hopefully do so in pinstripes. Judge’s new contract, the largest signed this off-season, largely took a back seat to his new title as dozens of media members packed into Yankee Stadium. “I’m gonna continue to try to be the same leader that I’ve been the past six years, continue to lead by example. “It was certainly a possibility, I knew sitting there at the time, that somebody had gone more than eight years.” The Yankees executives Lonn Trost and Randy Levine were also in attendance, as was Steinbrenner. And when Derek Jeter joined Judge on a crowded dais, the impending news became obvious before Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner could announce it.

"My blood, sweat and tears have gone into playing for this team," Judge said. "It helped me come to a clear answer that I belong in New York." Judge becomes the 16th captain in team history and the first since Derek Jeter, who held the title from 2003 through 2014. Judge said the offer shocked him into silence.

New York Yankees Welcome Home Aaron Judge With Venerable ... (Forbes)

New York Yankees have announced the re-signing of Aaron Judge to a nine-year, $360 million contract and named him the sixteenth captain.

Judge not only transcends the sport with his vast abilities, but he is also the personification of class and excellence. Judge gave everyone the impression that he was glad to have experienced free agency from a learning perspective, but he always knew in his heart that he belonged in the Bronx and wanted to continue building on his legacy as a beloved Yankee. At least Judge represents a glimmer of hope that he will provide the Yankees with a suitable return on investment and assist them in business ventures associated with the franchise. It is the circle of life in a sport that lacks a salary cap but strictly adheres to an onerous Competitive Balance Tax. It is a special honor to be a great Yankee who is homegrown and will only wear the venerable pinstripes throughout the entirety of their major league career. Managing General Partner and Co-Chairperson Hal Steinbrenner named Judge the sixteenth captain in franchise history and the seventh selected by a member of his family.

Aaron Judge Never Planned on Leaving the Yankees (Sports Illustrated)

The new Yankees captain and his representatives made it seem like he would go to another team. In reality, he always wanted to stay.

He called the GM “in a panic,” Cashman said, and later called Judge to reiterate how much he meant to the team and to him personally. Says Odle, “He wanted to go through the process, but in his heart of hearts, he wanted to be a Yankee.” The benefit of listening to other presentations, he adds, was “to define his market. 6—the day of the TIME story and of the meeting with the Padres—that Judge had chosen the Giants, Boone believed it. He did not tell the Yankees he was coming, and he did not meet with them when he was in town. But the Giants were, and suddenly the Padres were in the mix. He was concerned about a key sticking point: “There were no signs they were willing to go to nine years.” Even as he told Odle as the process progressed that he was becoming more sure he wanted to remain a Yankee, he kept manager Aaron Boone guessing. 6, just hours before Judge landed in San Diego to meet with the [Padres](https://www.si.com/mlb/team/san-diego-padres). This offseason will definitely be an adjustment I make just to make sure after a swing you get back up right away to hopefully reset a little quicker than you would in the past.” “I know those people in the front office, [with] their analytics, will have their ways of moving their outfielders and whatnot,” Rizzo said “Even that will be [more] beneficial than hitting with ... With the bases empty, hitters must be ready to hit with eight seconds left on the 15-second pitch timer. “Honestly, I think the biggest adjustment for those of us in the big leagues is going to be the pitch clock, hitting-wise,” he said. Rizzo hit 32 home runs last season, the most by a Yankees left-handed hitter in a decade (Robinson Canó in 2012). It’s still definitely will be beneficial to all lefties, I know that.” “I had some conversations with Judge, [to] see what he was thinking, obviously,” Rizzo said. Four-outfielder alignments, infield shifts and infielders stationed on the outfield grass are banned next season. Rizzo saw a shift 83% of the time last season, up from 35% in ’15. Those same batted balls last season resulted in a .232 BABIP. Is it going to be A, B, C or D? It was really, ‘What’s going to make you happy?
