And the Jazz were able to get to the free throw line 37 times on Thursday after taking 28 freebies on Tuesday, the two highest single-game totals against New Orleans all season long. Zion led the way with a team-high 31 points, to go along with eight rebounds, and eight assists. Pelicans look to avenge loss against Utah Jazz: Odds, injury ... (Pelican Debrief)

The New Orleans Pelicans will take on the Utah Jazz again, hoping to avenge the blow out loss Utah dealt them in the last game.

The over/under is high again at 231.5, as the books don’t think the Pelicans are going to have two off nights in a row. The money lines have shifted to -130 for New Orleans and +110 for Utah. The Jazz have had the Pelicans number so far this season, but the Pels have rarely played two bad games in a row, so I like them to bounce back tonight and salvage the split on the road in Utah.

Jazz Rookie Walker Kessler Signs With Adidas (KSL Sports)

Utah Jazz rookie center Walker Kessler was one of several top rookies to have signed an endorsement deal with megabrand Adidas on Thursday.

Kessler was the 22nd overall pick in June’s draft but was traded twice before beginning his NBA career. Kessler is the only player in NBA history to record a double-double while shooting 100 percent from the floor in their first NBA game. Kessler opened the season with a bang for the Jazz, making history in his rookie debut. Kessler is coming into his own as a member of the Jazz, proving to be one of the most impactful rookies in the NBA this season. In July, Kessler was redirected to the Jazz as part of a trade package for Rudy Gobert. Jazz Rookie Walker Kessler Signs With Adidas

If this type of production can become more consistent, Utah has found itself another diamond in the rough. Can the Jazz make the most of that again? But if Utah can once again attack him on defense and force him into some foul trouble, they’ll limit some of his magic on the offensive end. Due to foul trouble, Zion Williamson spent much of the last game riding the pine. With a healthy Lauri Markkanen, Mike Conley, and Jordan Clarkson, Utah offered an impressive performance on both ends of the court. Tonight, in snowy Salt Lake City, they have an opportunity to build off that win, facing the New Orleans Pelicans once again.

Utah Jazz get second straight win over Zion Williamson and the New ... (SLC Dunk)

Where do we start with this one? Let's talk about Jordan Clarkson. New Orleans Pelicans v Utah Jazz Photo by Alex Goodlett/Getty Images.

It’s a sign of how versatile the Jazz are and that they can beat you in a myriad of ways. Clarkson is consistently finding ways to help the Jazz win, and with each game, he seems to be finding more and more consistency. This is the type of play from superstars, and if Markkanen keeps this up, there’s no reason to think he can’t be representing Utah at all-star weekend. That gives the Jazz a lot of good problems. Kessler is becoming a special player for the Jazz, and there’s no reason to think he can’t be locked into the starting lineup for a long time. From the start, he was the driving force of the Jazz offense, hitting shots everywhere on the court.

Utah Jazz beat New Orleans Pelicans (Deseret News)

Mike Conley, Walker Kessler and Nickeil Alexander-Walker came up big as the Utah Jazz beat the New Orleans Pelicans at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City.

I don’t expect for Kessler to be Hardy’s choice to close every game and the matchups are certainly going matter, but it really is a big deal that Kessler is doing so well in his rookie campaign. “But, you know, I felt like he was doing a good job on that end, and then on the offensive end, he continues to learn how to help us whether he’s screening or spacing. “I am very conscious of everything,” he said, “but I’m starting to understand that people have their time — time and moments. “He was in the flow of the game, if that makes sense,” Hardy said. He has been getting a lot of minutes lately because of injuries to Conley and Collin Sexton. “Mike manipulated a lot of that stuff on the court, getting me in situations where I had the advantage,” Clarkson said. With Sexton still sidelined with a hamstring strain, Alexander-Walker is clearly getting some extra run, but what happens when Sexton comes back? Even in the most chaotic of moments, Conley calms things when other players might buckle or might not know what the smart thing to do is. “He helped us change our defense a little bit by challenging at the rim. Conley does this specifically to get Clarkson open — to make sure that Clarkson, who has been hot all night, will have a clear look. We knew it was going to be a long 48 minutes which turned into 53 minutes.” Games like this, you really see the difference.”

Clarkson dished on the Jazz coming up big in key moments that have contributed to a 3-0 record in overtime this year. The energy has been electric this year, and Utah's fan base is one of the few out there that brings a playoff atmosphere to a regular-season game. Kessler was a menace on defense as he blocked three shots and altered a handful of others at the rim. Kudos to head coach Will Hardy for giving Kessler a bump in minutes in a game the Jazz lose if the 7-foot big man plays his average of 16 per game. Clarkson and Markkanen may have grabbed the headlines by combining for 70 points, but Utah does not get the win without what Kessler brought to the table. Zion Williamson led the Pelicans with 31 points in a losing cause.

Thursday's victory over the Pelicans was just the latest instance of this season's Utah Jazz not faltering under the weight of a deficit.

“It’s the NBA — we’ve been a part of crazy comebacks, and we’ve had crazy comebacks happen to us,” added Alexander-Walker. [Alexander-Walker’s defense](https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2022/12/15/how-bout-this-jazz-podcast-great/) in the second half changed the tenor of the game and injected some life into a listless crowd. “We got a few losses that hurt us — the Rockets game, the Dallas game, all the games we’ve given up. [Jordan Clarkson](https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2022/12/04/jordan-clarkson-super-upset-will/)’s 17-point outburst in the opening quarter allowed them to keep pace. “And I thought tonight was just really representative of that.” 1 seed in a span of three days. We should be number one,” Beasley boasted. “We’re just hungry,” Clarkson said simply. Clarkson noted that communication was flowing on the bench during timeouts — various people giving input on actions they’d seen, bringing over iPads to demonstrate either how best to attack or defend them. “And at the same time, they really lean on each other. “Yeah, that should be us. and surged into the lead before the period was even over.

Markkanen, Conley Get High Weekly Grades In Jazz Return (KSL Sports)

The Utah Jazz are through week eight of the NBA season so it's time for another check-up on the four factors of a successful season.

Getting stuck in the middle is the only way to earn a failing grade. That was plainly clear as the Jazz started the week 0-2 with losses to Portland and Minnesota, but bounced back with consecutive wins over the top-ranked Pelicans with Markkanen and Conley back in the starting lineup. Ochai Agbaji also got a bite at the apple this past week with a series of Jazz injuries, including 12 minutes in the Jazz loss to Minnesota and 20 minutes in the loss to Denver. Closing close games against the top teams in the NBA is exactly the type of development the Jazz have been pushing for over the first eight weeks of the season and it paid off against New Orleans. Walker Kessler is a firm part of the Jazz rotation, and played arguably the best basketball of his career in Thursday night’s win over the New Orleans Pelicans. - Midway through the third quarter, the Jazz seemed to be just going through the motions and the Pelicans were in control of everything happening. The Jazz trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter but made a late run that kept things tight. Clarkson scored a season-high 39, 17 of which came in the first quarter alone.

Clarkson scores 39 points, Jazz outlast Pelicans in OT (TSN)

Jordan Clarkson scored a season-high 39 points and had eight rebounds in the Utah Jazz's 132-129 overtime victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday ...

The Jazz had a chance at a game-winning basket in regulation when Markkanen tossed up a short jumper in the final second. “They kind of had control of the game there for a little bit, especially to start the third quarter and I thought that our team dug deep,” Jazz coach Will Hardy said. The Jazz never trailed in the extra period after Clarkson made a pair of baskets to put Utah up 127-123. Beasley made an alley oop layup to cap a 14-1 run and put the Jazz up 91-90. New Orleans threatened to break a close game open in the third quarter after charging out to a 76-63 lead behind a 14-2 run. It definitely felt good to see the ball go in.”
