Avatar 2 Is History's Most Costly Nature Documentary (Slate Magazine)

In late 2009, when James Cameron's record-breaking blockbuster Avatar was released, the relationship of the average movie viewer to digital technology was ...

What that will mean for the future of moviegoing is a lot less clear than the pristine oceans of Pandora, but if you want to get a peek at what might be coming next, you might as well dive in. (All this is somewhat hastily clarified in a data dump as the movie begins, and you don’t need to grasp all the specifics in order to understand that big blue bad guy wants to kill big blue good guy and, if possible, his big blue family as well.) Given that this seems sure to be one of the few must-see-it-in-a-theater movie releases of the year, and that the tickets will be sold at a higher price point than those for your average 2D blockbuster, it seems like a safe bet that Avatar: The Way of Water will set another box-office record. To round out the cute-kid ensemble there is Spider (Jack Champion), a human boy who was abandoned by the colonizing forces that left Pandora at the end of the first film and who has grown up as a kind of self-sufficient wild child. [Titanic](https://slate.com/culture/2012/04/james-cameron-s-titanic-starring-leonardo-dicaprio-and-kate-winslet-now-in-3d-reviewed.html) and [The Abyss](https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2005/02/james-cameron-will-he-resurface.html) has a well-established penchant for going hard, which is why the most satisfying stretches of his new 3-hour-plus epic about the imperiled Na’vi people are those that take place in and around the oceanic home of the Metkayina people, a Na’vi tribe that lives in close contact with the sea and has evolved to survive for long periods underwater. In the nonfictional realm, Cameron also became a deep-sea explorer, using some of his massive profits from the first Avatar to construct a single-person submarine in which he became the

With “Avatar: The Way of Water” hitting theaters this weekend, director James Cameron is gambling that audiences are ready to not only return to Pandora ...

"Allow that suspension of disbelief to happen and just lose yourself in the world of Pandora. Some shots may not need the tool at all." "When filmmakers make a movie, they try to instill a suspense of disbelief. If you try a high frame rate look, you ruin the suspense of disbelief." "The old way of doing high frame rate makes it look like sports or a documentary or a soap opera, and it kind of disengages that storytelling zone," Miller says. This means that 24 still images are displayed on the screen every second, creating the illusion of motion.

By way of comparison, a superhero movie often has 70+% of PreSales in for Preview Night/Opening Day. The Jon Landau produced sequel has also seen the largest share of 3D ticket sales on Fandango since 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Lower than 70% is a strong indicator of success. The Batman ran at 2 hours and 56 minutes, while Avatar: The Way of Water runs at 3 hours and 12 minutes. It’s for that reason why distribution sources are expecting this movie to hold weekend to weekend, even if it comes in the low end this weekend. I’m hearing that showtimes for prime 3D, Imax, Dolby and premium format viewings are hard to come by in LA, NYC and Phoenix.

'Avatar: The Way of Water' Kicks Off at International Box Office With ... (Variety)

James Cameron's long-delayed “Avatar: The Way of Water” launched at the international box office, collecting $15.8 million from 15 overseas markets on ...

“Avatar 2” is poised to collect at least $250 million to $350 million internationally, with the potential for global ticket sales to reach $400 million to $500 million by Sunday. “The Way of Water” one of this year’s few Hollywood movies granted access to play in China, where the original became a sensation with $261 million. There’s a lot riding on “The Way of Water,” not just because of its exorbitant price tag, but also because it’s the first of three planned follow-ups in Cameron’s sprawling futuristic series. Beyond a strong opening weekend, “The Way of Water” will need to stick around in theaters well into the new year to justify its existence, at least financially speaking. There’s outsized importance on the international box office, where the first “Avatar” made over $2 billion — nearly 70% of its total earnings. The studio is also reporting that initial returns were 12% behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and 23% behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in comparable markets, two recent tentpoles that notched mega debuts.

While the showing you select is ultimately a matter of personal preference and availability, the consensus is that the highest quality way to experience “Avatar: The Way of Water” is an IMAX 3D screening with single-laser technology. Screenings in theaters not equipped to project in 48fps will simply show the entire film in a standard frame rate of 24fps, which means that many of the most visually impressive scenes will not be presented the way Cameron intended them. So a high-frame-rate screening of “Avatar 2” will project the entire film in 48fps, and the scenes shot in 24fps will simply show each frame twice (though that is not something that would be noticeable to a viewer). Dolby and IMAX ultimately come down to preference, with the consensus being that Dolby offers better picture quality, but the larger screens can often make IMAX a better viewing experience. But mainstream 3D filmmaking never quite caught on to the extent that people believed it would after “Avatar,” and it has become increasingly rare for a major new release to be screened in 3D, let alone shot with 3D viewing in mind. The first “Avatar” marked the beginning of something resembling a creative heyday for 3D filmmaking, with films like “Hugo,” “Goodbye to Language,” and “Jackass 3D” going on to demonstrate the creative potential of the medium.

Spider is close with the Sully family, having grown up with them and the Na'vi culture, but he is an alien to Pandora, which could cause conflict when the humans return to Pandora. That puts it ahead of early projections for Top Gun: Maverick, which currently ranks as the most successful movie this year. Reviews aside, it remains to be seen how the movie will perform and if it will reach the heights of its predecessor. “For the sequels, Cameron wanted to use the same motion capture tech for actors while they were submerged underwater, an unheard-of feat that required years to engineer a solution.” Cameron also decided to film the second and third movies together, which took three years to complete. This, on top of the time it took for post-production, all adds up to the 13-year wait. But if its current rating of 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes is any indication, a majority ultimately did enjoy the sequel for the visual spectacle that it is. Domestic box office projections are strong and reviews sway positive in general, but the coming days will offer a better sense of whether it’s on track to meet its lofty ambitions.

China Box Office: 'Avatar 2' Headed for $120M+ Opening-Day Splash (Hollywood Reporter)

Demand for James Cameron's mega-sequel appears strong in China, but raging COVID outbreaks could check its potential.

And when the original Avatar was rereleased in China in March 2021 — part of a bid by regulators to boost sales during a pandemic fallow period for both Chinese and Hollywood releases — it earned a healthy $58 million, the fourth most of any U.S. It took three years and the construction of thousands more cinemas for Avatar‘s China record to fall (to Stephen Chow’s Journey to the West, which brought in $215 million in 2013). Artisan Gateway is forecasting a wide range for Avatar 2‘s career total — $315 million to $415 million (RMB 2.2 billion to RMB 2.9 billion) — reflecting the unpredictability of the moment. With testing mostly suspended, it’s now impossible to get reliable data on just how elevated China’s infection rates have become, but anecdotal evidence in Beijing — reports of strained hospitals, businesses hampered by large numbers of absent staff and mostly empty streets — suggests a potentially enormous outbreak underway. The first film topped out at $202.6 million, an astonishing sum in 2010, when China was home to just 5,690 movie screens (today, there are over 82,000). The movie was among the initial wave of Hollywood blockbusters to descend upon the country as it was entering its high-growth box office boom era of the late aughts — and Avatar became the biggest sensation of them all. [box office](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/box-office/) consultancy Artisan Gateway. The sudden policy pivot came in response to growing social unrest over life under endless lockdowns, as well as rising infection rates in many Chinese cities, which some public health experts already believed had made “COVID zero” unsustainable. And Avatar 2‘s earnings prospects are especially hard to gauge thanks to the uncertainties surrounding the widespread COVID-19 outbreaks currently sweeping China’s major cities. On the face of it, China’s sudden freedoms of social movement would seem a boon to theatrical moviegoing. China’s largest ticketing app, Maoyan, meanwhile, is projecting The Way of Water to conclude its local run with $360 million (RMB 2.51 billion), which would make it Hollywood’s biggest movie in the country this year by far (more than double Jurassic World: Dominion‘s $157 million China haul) and the third-biggest U.S. [Avatar: The Way of Water](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/avatar-the-way-of-water/) is off to a strong start in China despite significant uncertainty surrounding the public health situation in the country.

That was, amusingly, enough to put it back over “Avengers: Endgame” as the biggest global grosser ever, a title it briefly lost partially due to the “Avengers” finale grossing a sky-high (and record for a Hollywood title) $629 million (out of $2.8 billion total) in China in 2019. The $203 million gross in China for the original “Avatar” in 2010 helped usher in a decade of Hollywood aiming their four-quadrant, franchise-friendly tentpoles at the Chinese marketplace. That the grosses are lower than hoped so far is at least partially due to COVID concerns and variables (even after China lifted most of its strict “COVID Zero” policies just last week). Not only did the original “Avatar” earn that $203 million in just 7% of the screens now currently available in China, but the film’s early 2021 re-release in China earned $57 million. That’ll be far bigger than any Hollywood import amid the COVID-era (above the $215 million cume of “F9”) and objectively quite large under the circumstances, but arguably below hopes and expectations for the likely global smash. That remains the biggest total ever in China for a solo DC/Marvel superhero flick.

I would have loved it if this were an adventure movie, with Jake and his family heading out into the wide, wild world and facing struggles that had nothing to do with the human colonizers. But the bad guys are coming with their guns and their bombs and their bombs and their guns. But even if that is how kids in the US talk in 2022—it isn’t, not to this degree—it makes no sense on an alien planet. And the Navi—a crude analog for the indigenous people of our own world—remain the Noble Savage trope they were in the last film, only less interesting now. It’s a retread of the first film. I didn’t see Avatar: The Way Of Water on an IMAX 3D screen because the nearest IMAX to where I live is at the Grand Canyon and they don’t show this kind of movie on that screen (even if they did it’s being renovated until next Spring). It’s arrogant and self-indulgent and I think the novelty that made that okay in the first film has worn off for audiences, or at least it has for me. Avatar 2 is perfectly enjoyable without the context of the first film, and there are clearly, as you can see above, some questions you might have that even the first film doesn’t answer. In The Way of Water, she oversees RDA activity on Pandora, activity she blames Sully for hindering; it’s she who calls for his execution. In the comic, Socorro dies during battle and, after the Na’vi defeat the humans, Miles is too small to return to earth in a cryopod, so he is left behind and raised alongside the few human stragglers and the Na’vi on Pandora. Edie Falco, who plays General Frances Ardmore, was not in the first film, but was introduced in the comics. Miles “Spider” Socorro (Jack Champion) is a retconned character who was first seen in the comic Though he wasn’t in the first film, the comic explains that Spider was born on the RDA colony base to Quaritch and Paz Socorro, an RDA pilot who never appears in Avatar 1. And if she died, how did the circumstances allow her to give birth to her 14-year-old daughter, Kiri (also played by Sigourney Weaver), in Avatar 2? In the first movie, Jake Sully was a paraplegic former Marine who agreed to join the Avatar Program, part of the Resources Development Administration (RDA), an incredibly powerful non-governmental human organization that wanted to mine Pandora for “unobtanium”—an energy-conducting mineral that had become highly valuable, given the depletion of Earth’s natural resources.
