'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' trailer reveals a Spidey civil war (Inverse)

The groundbreaking animation team behind the 2018 film 'Into the Spider-Verse' returns with an even more ambitious story.

The film was previously titled Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), but the parenthetical was dropped when the third film in the series was retitled Beyond the Spider-Verse. If this trailer is any indication, the Sony Spiderverse is getting bigger and more complicated, but that’s a challenge the franchise appears to be up for. The movie also apparently includes 240 characters and “at least” six different universes, some of which you can see in the trailer below. There are some familiar faces amid the chaos: Fans have already spotted the Is this our first look at a Spider-Man civil war? Breaking Down the Multiversal Madness of the Spider-Man: Across ... (Gizmodo)

Anyone can wear the mask, and Across the Spider-Verse is taking that to heart with a trailer just bursting with Spiders.

But beyond more cameos to come, very noticeably absent here is the Spot himself, even if he’s the source of conflict. Our latest look at Across the Spider-Verse leans much more on mystery, telling us little about what to expect in the new movie other than that Miles is going to face a lot of ostracization from the multiverse in a very different experience to his prior encounter with other Spideys in the first film. “We’re supposed to be the good guys,” Gwen growls, as she’s seemingly imprisoned in a high-tech shield. What on earth did Miles do to piss him and every other Spider off? She might have an updated design, but we know who this is: Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman (played in the movie by Issa Rae). We briefly cut to a shot of Gwen and Miles hanging out, quite literally given the effect of Gravity on Gwen’s ponytail. and MJ’s child in Across the Spider-Verse is none other than Mayday Parker, lifting the name from the Spider-Girl of Earth-982, who first appeared in 1997's What If...? Mary-Jane Watson as Spinneret and Anna-May “Annie” Parker in her AMP outfit from the Renew Your Vows comic series, set in a continuity where Peter Parker’s marriage to MJ is never eaten by Mysterio, and the Parker family becomes a trio of Spider-heroes... Let’s start with a Spidey standing upside-down above Miles and Gwen that looks an awful lot like he’s meant to be Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, in his Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home suit. Gwen and Miles find themselves in some kind of Escher-ian nexus that is just filled with Spiders. Later on after the party, Miles is relaxing in his room when one of the multiversal portals Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) conjured to see her new friend at the end of the last movie opens above him. Always nice to be reminded of the greatest superhero movie of all time.

In my own theory, I believe the sucesss of the first film is the reason why [Spider-man: No way Home](https://popgeeks.com/spider-man-no-way-home-comes-home-a-little-early/) got greenlit. Another sequel is already in the works, along with a Spider-Woman spinoff film.

Another sequel is already in the works, along with a spinoff featuring Steinfeld and Rae's incarnations of Spider-Woman, as well as the character of Cindy Moon/Silk. The primary villain this time around is the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), whose body is covered in inter-dimensional portals designed to look like "living ink that had spilled or splattered on a comic artist's drawing." ) We also glimpse Earth-50101 (aka "Mumbattan," meshing together of Manhattan and Mumbai). A highlight of the new trailer is the six distinct animation styles used for the universe of each incarnation of Spider-Man—very much a deliberate creative choice. Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The first trailer just dropped, and it looks like another trippy, universe-hopping fun ride—hopefully a worthy successor to one of the best films of 2018.

The main villain of Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse is the multiversal villain The Spot (voiced by Jason Schwartzman). Rae’s Spider-Woman is fighting a variant of the Vulture in the trailer. This version of the Vulture is brown instead of green, and it’s hard to tell if he’s wearing a suit or if he has biological wings. Spider-Man 2099 also appears to be a leader in the Spider-Verse, which explains why he’ll be at odds with Miles. Parker (voiced by Jake Johnson), a middle-aged hero who was a reluctant teacher of Miles in the first movie. There’s also Mary Jane Watson/Spinneret and Annie Parker/Spiderling, the wife and daughter of Peter Parker from Earth-18119. In the Spider-People citadel, we also get a clear image of the black and yellow Spider-Armor MK II, introduced in 2011’s Amazing Spider-Man #656. It’s not of Spider-Men that the multiverse is built, as we also see plenty of Spider-Women around. It could also be a nod to the Chasm Suit, which debuted in 2022’s Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. Everyone goes back to their original universe, but in the last few frames of the first movie, Miles hears Gwen's (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) voice calling him from the multiverse. 5 things we learned from the 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ... (Inverse)

The highly anticipated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel takes us on a leap of faith.

“We’re supposed to be the good guys,” Gwen says in the trailer’s final moments, to which Miguel responds: “We are.” A clash of ideals has always been a favored conflict for Spider-Man films, and it’s clear that Across the Spider-Verse will be following that well-trodden path. It’s a bit wild to see so many Spidey variants in one place, especially after the events of Into the Spider-Verse, which proved that no Spider-Person can survive in a universe that isn’t their own. A version of Pavitr’s own universe, Mumbhattan, was teased in the very first trailer for the Spider-sequel, so to see that Pavitr himself really will be joining the fray — and with such an amazing new design — is music to our ears. “She wanted kids,” Peter told Miles in Into the Spider-Verse, “and it scared me.” But with a new crop of heroes set to appear in the sequel, it might be a hard lesson to remember. In Across the Spider-Verse, Miles and Gwen discover a sort of pocket realm where hundreds of Spider-People have gathered. Into the Spider-Verse inarguably set a new precedent for ensemble casts, considering that the major players in the film are all variants of one familiar hero. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a one in a million feat. There’s a lot to glean from the new footage, but let’s take a look at a few of the most important developments coming up in Across the Spider-Verse. She’s also seen dueling with a Vulture variant in the trailer, likely the version voiced by Jorma Taccone. [Into the Spider-Verse](https://www.inverse.com/article/51274-spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-review-animated-and-best) leaned heavily on Miles’ relationship with his father figures, Across the Spider-Verse is shedding new light on his dynamic with his mother Rio (Luna Lauren Vélez). Ironically, Sony Pictures will have to answer this question with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the first of a few planned sequels.
