Three days before he went on Meet the Press, Gallup found 50% of Americans approved of same-sex marriage. Back in 1967, just 3% of Americans were in interracial marriages. Through the mid-'90s, Americans were still split on the subject. This week's NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll found now that number has more than doubled to 43%, but is still shy of a majority.

One of my proudest moments as a legislator was voting in favor of marriage equality in New York State, and this law takes an important step to mandate recognition of same-sex marriages in all 50 states.

And if judges decide, after Dobbs, to treat Obergefell as less worthy of respect as precedent — as simply requiring the state to license marriages for same-sex couples, rather than give more full-throated respect to same-sex couples’ families — then the rights of same-sex couples remain under threat. When a woman in a married same-sex couple gives birth, she and her spouse should both be treated as legal parents based on the marital presumption of parentage that has long applied to married different-sex couples, treating the birth mother’s husband as the legal father. There are legitimate concerns that Catholic charities and hospitals have over religious freedom, but who is going to believe anything the bishops say in the future. [The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints](https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2021/11/13/lds-leader-dallin-oaks/), the bishops are unwilling to negotiate reasonable compromises with people with other concerns. In their arguments they shot down the false accusations that the RMA would threaten religious liberty. They wanted the bill passed and knew that it would be scuttled by accusations that it threatened religious institutions. Instead, in response to the Respect for Marriage Act, the bishops said that Catholic institutions will lose their tax exemptions; Catholic social services will not get government funding. “Their claims about funding and tax exemptions in the Respect for Marriage Act are just false,” said Laycock. Supreme Court ruled that the nursing homes run by the Little Sisters of the Poor did not have to offer birth control in its employee insurance plan. “They have opposed religious liberty legislation, and they opposed health care for uninsured Americans.” Neither politicians nor Catholic voters care what the bishops say anymore.
