2022 NFL season, Week 14: What We Learned from Patriots' win ... (NFL.com)

On a night in which an injury to Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray hung over the game, the Cards simply couldn't keep up with the New England ...

[Trey McBride](https://www.nfl.com/players/trey-mcbride/)) that was broken up by [Jahlani Tavai](https://www.nfl.com/players/jahlani-tavai/)and bought the Patriots just enough time to kick a field goal to end the half. [Josh Uche](https://www.nfl.com/players/josh-uche/)is on fire. Matthew Judon's 1.5 sacks, meanwhile, moved him into a tie with San Francisco's Nick Bosa for the league lead (14.5 sacks). His plus-35 rushing yards over expected are the second-most on a single carry for the Patriots this season. The ball fell into the hands of two-way dynamo [Marcus Jones](https://www.nfl.com/players/marcus-jones-2/)for an interception. For a Cardinals team that never fully exited the starting blocks in 2022, this is likely the final blow that should send them to darkness, and it's no fault of backup quarterback [Colt McCoy](https://www.nfl.com/players/colt-mccoy/). [DeVante Parker](https://www.nfl.com/teams/new-england-patriots/roster)to a head injury and defensive back [Jack Jones](https://www.nfl.com/players/jack-jones-2/)to a knee ailment early, then watched bulldozing running back [Rhamondre Stevenson](https://www.nfl.com/players/rhamondre-stevenson/)exit with an ankle injury. [Kyler Murray](https://www.nfl.com/players/kyler-murray/)already missed two games due to a hamstring issue this season, and Monday night produced an injury that will likely end his season. That fumble resulted in a [Raekwon McMillan](https://www.nfl.com/players/raekwon-mcmillan/)fumble-return touchdown, putting the Patriots ahead in what was previously a tie game. South Dakota State product [Pierre Strong](https://www.nfl.com/players/pierre-strong/)finally saw the field after spending most of the season on ice and didn't waste much time before making an impact, catching a [Mac Jones](https://www.nfl.com/players/mac-jones/)pass for a 16-yard gain and using his top-flight speed to race around the left end for a 44-yard gain on the ground, setting up a game-tying [Nick Folk](https://www.nfl.com/players/nick-folk/)field goal. [DeAndre Hopkins](https://www.nfl.com/players/deandre-hopkins/)made a couple of crucial mistakes, including an illegal shift that wiped out a 15-yard gain with the Cardinals trailing by 14 points, and a fumble that happened solely because Hopkins didn't tuck the ball away securely when running after the catch. The other failed conversion -- before things got desperate and required Arizona to go for it -- happened because [Marquise Brown](https://www.nfl.com/players/marquise-brown/)dropped a pass downfield.

Patriots at Cardinals: MNF Preview, Prop Picks, Prediction (The Daily Nonpareil)

Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals are in desperation mode as they entertain the New England Patriots on Monday night at Glendale, Ariz.

Cardinals: Cornerback Byron Murphy (back), receiver Rondale Moore (groin) and guard Rashaad Coward (chest) will miss the game. Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson Anytime TD (-167 at BetRivers): This player prop has drawn the most tickets and money at the sportsbook. Patriots: Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers (concussion) was ruled out Saturday as was cornerback Jalen Mills (groin) and offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn (foot). The action was a bit more split at DraftKings, with the Patriots drawing 51 and 54 percent, respectively. Over 44 Total Points (-110 at all three sportsbooks): Both starting quarterbacks have drawn their share of criticism during generally disappointing seasons. Coming off its bye, Arizona has lost two straight games and six of its past eight.

Inactive Analysis: Patriots OTs Trent Brown, Yodny Cajuste Officially ... (Patriots.com)

The Patriots are healthier at tackle against a blitz-happy Cardinals defense.

Our best guess on McGrone is that one of the Pats regulars at linebacker is dealing with something making them a game-time decision, so McGrone was elevated as insurance in case that player couldn't play. The Pats secondary will likely have a similar look as it did against the Bills, where the rookie Joneses played a larger role. Fellow practice squad call-up Jamie Collins is active and will appear in his second game of the season. There's also the school of thought that Jones could attack single coverage and fewer defenders in the backend when the Cardinals send pressure by taking shots downfield. On a positive note, the Patriots will have offensive lineman Trent Brown (illness) and Yodny Cajuste (calf/back). The Patriots have their ideal starting five along the O-Line, but Jones needs another quick outlet to beat the blitz without Meyers.

The Patriots get back their winning season record with the victory, breaking their two-game losing streak and improving to 7-6 on the 2022 campaign. It capped off a run of 13-straight points for the Patriots as they climbed out of a deficit for one of the few times this season. First, Matthew Judon got a stop in the backfield on third down, forcing the Cardinals to go for it on 4th-and-1. It looked like the Cardinals were about to build on their 13-7 lead until an excellent two-play sequence by the Patriots defense got them off the field for the first time in three possessions. The Cardinals weren't the only ones to see their gameplan turned on its head, as New England saw a multitude of injuries hit in the first half, starting with cornerback Jack Jones (knee) and then followed by wide receiver DeVante Parker (head) and running back Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle). As expected, the veteran got the ball out quick and was able to complete a number of passes to show some early promise.

The recently acquired Anderson had two catches for 13 yards in his first six games with the Cardinals but finished Monday with three catches for 44 yards. The Patriots then turned an interception by rookie cornerback [Marcus Jones](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4241720/marcus-jones) on the ensuing Cardinals drive into a rushing touchdown. DeVante Parker left the game after his head was driven into the turf and he could not stand up straight.

They had good field position for the drive after [Isaiah Simmons](http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4035462/isaiah-simmons) intercepted a pass from Jones, who was hit on the arm by rookie Cam Thomas as he was throwing. He worked his magic again — at least for a while — leading the Cardinals to a 13-10 halftime lead. The fourth-year quarterback was flushed out of the pocket and running to his right when he tried to juke past a Patriots defender, but tumbled to the grass in obvious pain. “The guys that are going to go in there are going to fight until the very end. 5 takeaways from the Patriots' win against the Cardinals (Boston.com)

A strong pass rush and rookie running backs helped make the difference in Arizona. Patriots touchdown Cardinals Patriots linebacker Raekwon McMillan celebrates ...

In addition to the defensive line, New England’s linebackers and secondary kept up pressure on ball carries. Jones pitched in by returning two kickoffs and a punt, having become the team’s go-to returner. Beset by injuries, especially at cornerback and wide receiver, the Patriots have found a bright spot in rookie defensive back Marcus Jones. If anything, much of the offense’s performance on Monday provided more reasons for [critics](https://twitter.com/danorlovsky7/status/1602505615242321920?s=20&t=82CtObJU_bLy4gMlb2la1Q) to jump in. In all, New England finished with six sacks and held Arizona to one fourth down conversion on five attempts. And while the game ended in somewhat comfortable circumstances, it was hardly smooth sailing for Jones and Patricia. On the Patriots’ side of the ball, DeVante Parker — already filling in as the team’s No. As a result, New England moved to 7-6 and (for the moment) occupies the final AFC playoff spot. On the Cardinals’ third offensive play from scrimmage, Murray scrambled to his right and went down in pain despite not being tackled. It meant that by game’s end, even Jones and Patricia found time to (a fourth-round pick) provided some unabashedly good news for Patriots fans. In purely football terms, it was far from a vintage New England display.

New England Patriots Postgame Quotes 12/12 (Patriots.com)

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, quarterback Mac Jones and select players comment on their game against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday, ...

"It was great to be able to get a win and move on and focus on what we have ahead. That's what we have to focus on and that's what we have to harp on. The best fans in the world and I can't complain." "We made fun of (Patriots LB Jahlani) Tavai, he's got to come up with that ball, but for him to make that play in that moment is big for our defense and we got off the field. I love the way he's playing, the confidence and poise and it's the most he's been able to play since he's been in the NFL. "I think Kyler (Cardinals QB Kyler Murray) is different than a lot of quarterbacks in the league and he's definitely different than Colt (Cardinals QB Colt McCoy). The guys want to be out there and the guys that play hard are going to be out there. "Hunter (Henry) and (tight end) Jonnu (Smith) have done a great job for us in the tight end room. We knew what we had to do to win and he called a great game and stayed calm. That's what we want to do, just try to win the game however we had to do it, and those guys made some great plays. We were fortunate to get on it and kick the field goal. It depends on what the pattern was that we had called and what the coverage was.

They continued to play hard on the offensive side of the ball, and it took the consistency from Bentley and others to deliver the knockout blow. Here’s to hoping he can get back to being a threat in the red zone, where the Patriots have clearly struggled this season. They’ll have a big game one week and then go without a single catch the next week. Much has been made about the tight end struggles for the Patriots, but on Monday night, Hunter Henry silenced critics by hauling in three passes for a team-high 70 receiving yards. Nelson Agholor looked like he stepped into a time machine and went back to his days with the Philadelphia Eagles in this game. Not to be outdone, Strong found his way into the end zone as well in the second half after demonstrating his speed on multiple plays. Granted, he was feasting on sack lunches (3) against the Cardinals, but he also forced a bad pass from Colt McCoy that led to Marcus Jones getting an interception. Things thinned out quickly for the Patriots at running back after Rhamondre Stevenson went down with an ankle injury. Here’s to hoping someone buys Patriots quarterback Mac Jones a nice pair of Brooks shoes because he was running for his life against the Cardinals. But the next man up mentality proved too strong to be outdone for a Patriots team that desperately needed a win. Keep in mind, the team was starting Conor McDermott at right tackle with Isaiah Wynn once again out of action. However, they did what they had to do and finished strong with a victory over a Cardinals team that’s clearly better than their record indicates.

They're missing four of their starting offensive linemen and lost tight end Zach Ertz for the season, also because of a knee injury. He tried to juke past a Patriots defender, but instead fell to the grass in obvious pain. “He'll be out the rest of the game. “It's tough,” Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury told “Monday Night Football” at the end of the first quarter. The 25-year-old signed a $230.5 million contract during the offseason that could keep him with the franchise until 2028. Backup Colt McCoy entered the game in Murray's place. “You never want to see the guy in front of you go down. “You see teams go through that every week, but you lose your star third play of the game, noncontact, it’s tough to watch,” Kingsbury said. Flushed out of the pocket, Murray took off to the right and tried to juke a Patriots defender. Players from both teams surrounded Murray before he was carted off the field holding a towel to his face. 1 overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft. Mac Jones and the New England Patriots went into Arizona and beat the Cardinals on Monday Night to move into Wild Card position in the AFC.

ARI is driving with a 3rd and 6 fro the NE 16. The Cardinals went blow for blow with Los Angeles and took a touchdown lead with a James Conner 6 yards catch early in the fourth quarter. The Cards got points of the board after the INT, but had to settle for a field goal. The D got a late turnover on downs and NE turned that into three points. McCoy going deep down the right sideline for Brown and he tried to make the one handed catch, but couldn't tuck it in. Stevenson went down early in the game, and Harris took over in the backfield for NE. He gets right back to his feet and sees the chians move. Hopkins coughed up the ball and McMillan scooped it and scored. The Pats QB went 24/35 for 235 yards and overcame an early interception thrown in the first quarter. The Cardinals were deep in their territory when McCoy hit DeAndre Hopkins on a crossing route, but the Arizona receiver fumbled and Raekwon McMillan scooped up the fumble and took it to the house to give the Pats the 20-13 lead. They went just 1-3 in the red zone, and to add to their two giveaways, they turned it over on downs three other times. With Stevenson hurt, Kevin Harris’ workload got heavier and he took a 14 yard run to the house to give the Pats a 7-6 lead.

New England turned a 13-10 halftime deficit into a 27-13 win as Cardinals QB Kyler Murray was carted off with a knee injury.

Murray signed a $230.5m contract during the offseason that could keep him with the franchise until 2028, but that was when a steady stream of unwanted headlines started. He worked his magic again – at least for a while – leading the Cardinals to a 13-10 halftime lead. Players from both teams surrounded the quarterback before he was carted off the field with a towel draped over his head. The fourth-year quarterback was flushed out of the pocket and running to his right when he tried to juke past a Patriots defender, but tumbled to the grass in obvious pain. “I looked back, saw it was just me and a lineman,” McMillan said of his mindset when scooping the fumble. The Patriots might need to play these rookie running backs more than expected over the final four weeks of the season. played a huge role on the Patriots' first drive of the second half. All 10 of those sacks have come since Week 8, which is the most in the league over that span. Stevenson returned to the game in the second quarter but was eventually ruled out in the third quarter. Uche now has 10 sacks and he's played in 11 of the team's 13 games this season. Unfortunately for the Pats, they will leave Arizona with several key players nursing injuries. The Patriots are 7-6 and occupy the third wild card playoff spot as the No. 7 seed in the AFC. The Pats have a pretty tough schedule to end the regular season.

That, in a nutshell, seems to be the reason the Patriots try to play it as safely as they do. They'll certainly need to be better against the Bengals, Dolphins and Bills. They were flagged for a delay of game penalty and seemed to have issues with the communication between Jones and Patricia. They'll need to be better, in all likelihood, against the Raiders. They nearly fumbled away points at the end of the first half with a head-scratching run call. Patriots Unfiltered Mailbag: Targeting a No. 1 WR, looking ahead to ... (Patriots.com)

Finding a No. 1 wide receiver is at the top of the list in this week's mailbag.

In the offseason Robert Kraft said not winning playoff games wasn't acceptable. What are the odds Mac would want to stay if Brady did in fact return? He's been in this building longer than most and would probably excel in the position. Even if it meant that Mac Jones wouldn't be part of the future, I think it would be worth it to be more competitive in the present while continuing to search for the quarterback of the future. Tom Brady has been pretty clear about not wanting to be a part of a rebuilding team. I like your idea of putting those three on the field together, even when everyone is healthy. Who are some veteran WRs you could see possibly become available for trade this offseason for the team to target? There have also been a lot of moving parts up front due to injuries, and using the hurry-up regularly is hard for players who don't have a ton of experience – like Conor McDermott against the Bills. Do you think it's just something they haven't practiced well so they haven't implemented it often? As promising/talented as they are, we clearly need someone who can consistently guard the top dogs of the receiver world. Paul Perillo What receivers do you think would make an impact via trade and who would we give up (player or draft pick), or just address that need via the draft and who should be targeted?

Say what you will about Agholor as a receiver, but this play shows just how much he cares for the health of his teammates. Nelson Agholor took a knee and was flailing desperately to try to get the play stopped for Parker. Rather than let his teammate who had clearly suffered a significant injury play on, Agholor chose to take a knee and delay the play from occurring. With Damien Harris also in a contract year, it will be interesting to see how much the Patriots value their young studs when negotiating with him this offseason. Later in the game, Strong pulled off a 44-yard dash, demonstrating his combine-leading straightaway speed. to supply New England’s ground game, and they both made the most of the opportunity. The Patriots arguably have a top-10 running back duo in the league between Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson. However, Harris has been out for multiple weeks with a thigh injury, which thrust Stevenson into an every-down role, one that he did not relinquish until tonight when he was taken out of the game with an ankle injury. On the night, he recorded two passes defended, 12 receiving yards, an interception, and seven tackles, including this massive hit on Cardinals tight end Trey McBride. While Jones had made more highlights on special teams and offense than on defense this season, he remains a critical component of New England’s defensive scheme. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins led the team with 79 receiving yards on seven receptions, and running back James Conner totaled 85 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Arizona’s defensive backs were largely playing off-ball coverage, and so New England exposed them with quick passes about five yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

Whatever the case may have been, it's hard to fathom how and why this particular moment didn't trigger the ATC spotter to stop the game immediately. Beginning in 2015, spotters were given the power to stop the game. Nobody -- not the ATC spotters who are specifically watching for signs of concussions, not the Patriots' coaching staff, not the team doctor, not the official who was standing mere feet away from an unsteady Parker -- appeared to notice that Parker could not stand up straight. Players are much more educated and aware of the impact of concussions, and Agholor's desperation showed that the message is landing with some players. Immediately, Parker struggled to get to his feet, requiring the assistance of a teammate just to stand. Except, that is, for teammate Nelson Agholor, who was desperately trying to stop the play so that Parker could receive medical attention.

How the hell are the Patriots a playoff team? (Boston.com)

If the postseason began today, seventh-seeded New England would face the 10-3 Chiefs in Kansas City. Read more on Boston.com.

With four weeks remaining in the NFL’s regular season, the Patriots may currently be in the playoff picture, but it’s going to take a whole lot for that to remain the case at the end of the season. They will be an 8-9 or 7-10 team because that is who the Patriots are, a team that takes advantage of bad teams and wilts against everybody else. The coach insists he’s still committed to the Patriots’ offensive approach and coaching staff, which is sort of like demanding that you get all your holiday shopping done at Bradlees, a fruitless pursuit. It might even be more realistic to ponder which teams might want to trade for him during the offseason rather than what 2023 is going to look like for Jones in Foxborough. Where to begin with a Patriots offense that is every bit as dysfunctional as preseason pundits predicted that it would be as early as March? There was nothing telling about the Patriots’ 27-13 win in the desert, a “victory” that allowed New England to leapfrog back into the AFC playoff picture.

After Further Review: The Patriots Offense Might've Found a Formula ... (Patriots.com)

The Matt Patricia-led offense found enough points (20) to come away with a victory against Cardinals backup quarterback Colt McCoy. Still, it was another week ...

- The Patriots D-Line needs to penetrate the line of scrimmage more in the run game than in the last two weeks. But they need to cover the middle of the field better. - Offensive tackle is a high-priority need for the Patriots in the offseason. I'd like to see him be more explosive to cover more ground in his climbs up the pocket, but you can see the lack of trust in the protection on his drop-backs. - The good news for the Pats receivers is that Tyquan Thornton was open in this game. This time, Uche uses a speed-to-power rush with a rip finisher to turn the corner on Jones and hits McCoy as he releases the ball to cause an interception. When Jones sets back to protect his edge, Uche uses a two-hand swipe and rip move to jump inside Jones for the sack. This time, the Patriots use two deep safeties in a cover-seven call to bracket both Hopkins (left) and Hollywood Brown (right slot) as they anticipate Brown to run another crosser with the double team going towards Hopkins, as Anderson did before. But they need to have a variety of combinations out of these looks and try to bait defenses to come downhill and hit deeper routes with receivers on the move (please, a bluff screen). Jones serves as a decoy again on orbit motion, and watch the impact it has on the defense when Mac fakes the ball to the rookie, sucking up the defensive line into the backfield. With Jones releasing into the flat on a stick concept and Mac staring him down to influence the flat defender, it expands the short zones in the Cardinals coverage structure to open up space for Tyquan Thornton's route that gains another 12 yards. New England's longest play from scrimmage was a four verticals concept on first down, where the defensive line has to respect the threat of a run or another screen and can't just pin its ears back.
