Mississippi State head football coach Mike Leach has died following a heart attack on Sunday. Leach was 61 years old.
He was voted the American Football Coaches Association national coach of the year in 2008. Leach took over as coach at Mississippi State in 2020 and led the team to a 19-17 record over three seasons. 22 in the country, finished 8-4 this season and is slated to face Illinois in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida, on Jan. Social media was filled with video clips of Leach on Sunday and Monday after it was announced he'd suffered a heart attack over the weekend. "Mike was a giving and attentive husband, father and grandfather," the Leach family said in a statement. "He was able to participate in organ donation at UMMC as a final act of charity.

Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach suffered a heart attack at his home, went without oxygen for several minutes and is still hospitalized.

He's one of the most recognizable faces and voices in college football. Leach has an overall record of 158-107 in head coaching stops at MSU, Texas Tech and Washington State. Prior to coming to Mississippi State, Leach was the head coach at Washington State from 2012 to 2019. "Mike’s family is with him and appreciates the overwhelming expressions of love and support for the coach, but also requests that their family’s privacy be respected at this time. It appears, according to sources, that Leach may have suffered seizures with the possibility of brain damage.
The 61-year-old Bulldogs coach was stricken at home Sunday and transported to a hospital via helicopter.
Leach jumped from there to the SEC with Mississippi State in 2020, going 4-7 in his first season before posting winning records each of the last two years. Leach spent 1999 as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma before getting his first major head coaching job at Texas Tech in 2000. He was a college football icon, a coaching legend but an even better person. He was always authentic. Jason Puckett, a WSU alum and co-host of ‘Puck & Jim’ on 93.3 KJR Sports Radio said Leah was “the best hire the school ever made.” Adding, “Probably going to be the best signing ever because of where the state of Cougar football was at that moment. He was always genuine. Leach was at practice on Saturday with the Bulldogs football team before suffering his health issue on Sunday.
